Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence Promoted by AIE-active Chiral Co-assemblies in Liquid Crystal Polymer Films

Recently, extensive works have focused on increasing the dissymmetry factors (glum) of various circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, which is one of the most important factors for future applications of CPL. Herein, we designed a chiral co-assembled liquid crystal polymer (LCP) PTZ@R/S-PB2, which was prepared by chiral binary co-polymer (R/S-PB2) doped with achiral phenothiazine derivation dye (PTZ). For comparison, ternary co-polymerized LCP (R/S-PT) was synthesized by co-polymerizing with mesogenic monomer, chiral monomer and emissive monomer. Both PTZ@R/S-PB2 and R/S-PT showed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Interestingly, the CPL signals of both PTZ@R/S-PB2 and R/S-PT were reversed and amplified after thermal annealing treatment. The |glum| values of the co-assembled PTZ@R/S-PB2 were up to 0.13 at a 32 nm thickness, which was 5.4 times that of R/S-PT (|glum|=0.024). This is due to PTZ@R/S-PB2 could form more orderly chiral co-assembly structures. Noticeably, increasing the LCP film thickness could further improve the glum value, and the maximum glum of PTZ@R/S-PB2 could be enhanced to +0.91/-0.82 at a 220 nm thickness.

General Strategy to Prepare Nondoped Circularly Polarized Luminescent Liquid Crystal Materials with Tunable Performance

Chiral luminescent liquid crystals have attracted widespread attention from researchers due to their unique advantages in constructing circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials with large luminescent asymmetry factor (glum) values. However, how to effectively prepare nondoped CPL chiral liquid crystals remains a challenge. In this article, we developed an effective and universal method to prepare nondoped CPL chiral liquid crystal materials. To achieve our strategy, we copolymerized chiral monomer M0Mt with α-cyanostilbene-based luminescent monomers MmPVPCN (m = 6, 8, 10) bearing different flexible spacer lengths to obtain a series of CPL chiral liquid crystal copolymers poly(MmPVPCN(x)-co-M0Mt(y)). Under the induction of the chiral component, the α-cyanostilbene component assembles to form chiral liquid crystals. Meanwhile, α-cyanostilbene also exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement characteristics. Therefore, with the help of the selective reflection effect of chiral liquid crystals, the copolymer films can emit efficient CPL. For poly(M8PVPCN(0.85)-co-M0Mt(0.15)), the glum and solid luminescence quantum yield can achieve -2.61 × 10-2 and 25.04%, respectively. In addition, by altering the chemical structure of the copolymers, the phase structure of the copolymers can be effectively controlled, thereby regulating their CPL properties.

Synthesis and Properties of Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Liquid Crystal Copolymers with Linearly Polarized Luminescence Characteristic

Room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) liquid crystal materials have garnered considerable attention because of their significant applications in organic light emitting diodes, polarized light emitting materials, and so forth. How to efficiently synthesize pure organic RTP liquid crystals and regulate their performance is of great significance. In this article, we propose a simple and feasible method to synthesize RTP liquid crystals and manipulate their properties through copolymerization. We constructed RTP liquid crystal copolymers by copolymerizing a phosphorescent monomer bearing biphenyl mesogen with a phosphorescent monomer bearing a dibenzofuran chromophore. All the synthesized copolymers show a liquid crystal property because of the introduction of biphenyl mesogen. Meanwhile, by changing the composition of copolymers, it is possible to regulate their RTP performance, including luminescence color and lifetime. As the content of the PMDFM0C component in copolymers increases, the phosphorescence lifetime gradually increases. For poly(MDFM0C(0.46)-co-MBi18C(0.54)), the phosphorescence lifetime can reach 463.0 ms. Moreover, the phosphorescence color of the PMDFM0C component in copolymers changes with the copolymer composition, which can induce variable room-temperature phosphorescence. In addition, when oriented, liquid crystal copolymer films can emit linearly polarized fluorescence and linearly polarized phosphorescence. The linearly polarized phosphorescence dichroic ratio and polarization ratio values of the oriented poly(MDFM0C(0.46)-co-MBi18C(0.54)) film are 3.33 and 0.50, respectively.

The preparation and properties of circularly polarized luminescent liquid crystal physical gels with self-supporting performance

In recent years, great progress has been made in the preparation methods and performance regulation of host-guest doped CPL liquid crystal materials. However, there still exist some basic problems to be solved, such as complex packaging and unstable CPL properties. With the consideration of the above problems, in this study, we introduced gelators into the host-guest doped CPL liquid crystal materials to prepare CPL liquid crystal physical gels. The gelators can be assembled to form a nanofiber physical gel network, which limits the movement of the liquid crystals and enhances the stability of the CPL properties. Meanwhile, liquid crystal physical gels show self-supporting ability and the gel-sol phase transition temperature can reach 136 °C. The amplification of the g_lum value is achieved by self-assembly of chiral liquid crystals, and the g_lum value can reach -0.31. The phase structure changes with electric field and temperature, and the CPL properties can be regulated by changing the temperature and electric field. With the increasing applied voltage or the temperature, the g_lum value decreases. Therefore, we have successfully prepared a new type of CPL liquid crystal physical gels with self-supporting performance, stimulus response performance and large g_lum values.

Inverted Circularly Polarized Luminescence Behavior Induced by Helical Nanofibers through Chiral Co-Assembly from Achiral Liquid Crystal Polymers and Chiral Inducers

Chiral supramolecular assembly can provide a powerful strategy for developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials by forming helices or superhelices into single or multiple components. Herein, we chose three achiral liquid crystal polymers (LC-P1/P2/P3) and chiral binaphthyl-based inducers (R/S-M) with anchored dihedral angles to construct chiral co-assemblies and explore the induced CPL behavior from pyrenyl (Py) emitters in achiral LC polymers through the regulation of helical nanofibers during the supramolecular co-assembly process. Most interestingly, chiral co-assembly (R/S-M)_0.1-(P3)_0.9 emitted an inverted blue-colored CPL signal during thermal annealing treatment at the glass transition temperature due to the flexible main chain of the LC polymer (LC-P3). The strongest blue-colored CPL emission for the (R/S-M)_0.1-(P3)_0.9 spin-coated film (λ_em = 455 nm, |g_em| = 6.47 × 10^-2, Φ_F = 48.5%) could be detected by using thermal annealing treatment at 105 °C.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystalline Polyether with Broad Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high purity and broad tunability was achieved in a new type of polyether-based cholesteric liquid crystalline (CLC) copolymers comprising chiral cholesteryl, nematic mesogens, and cross-linkable moieties. The phase boundary diagram of the copolymers was constructed, wherein the CLC phase in a wide composition and temperature window down to room temperature was achieved. Furthermore, reflection colors across the infrared and visible light regions can be continuously tuned by altering composition or temperature, which can be further fixed in the flexible CLC elastomer by photo-cross-linking. Introducing achiral dyes in the CLC thin films can generate strong CPL with distinct handedness and high dissymmetry factors (g_lum). Particularly, the left-handed full-color CPL is obtained by selective circularly polarized scattering in the spectral region outside the band gap of the CLC thin film, and the right-handed CPL with g_lum up to -1.05 is achieved within the band gap of the CLC thin film following the selective circularly polarized reflection mechanism. This type of CPL active material is expected to have potential applications in liquid crystal display and photonics.
