Non-cationic hyper-crosslinked ionic polymers with hierarchically ordered porous structures: facile synthesis and applications for highly efficient CO2 capture and conversion

Hyper-crosslinked porous ionic polymers (HCPIPs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique ionic properties and high specific surface areas. However, the limited variety of monomers, low ionic density, and difficulty in functionalization restrict their development. Herein, a series of functionalized non-cationic HCPIPs with high ionic density are designed and directly synthesized via an innovative and straightforward approach - anion (and cation) hyper-crosslinking of tetraphenylborate-based ionic liquids (ILs). These HCPIPs offer controllable hydroxyl group content (0-2.40 mmol g-1), high IL content (1.20-1.78 mmol g-1), and large specific surface area (636-729 m2 g-1) with hierarchically ordered porous structures. These HCPIPs demonstrate exceptional CO2 adsorption capacities and CO2/N2 adsorption selectivities, reaching up to 2.68-3.01 mmol g-1 and 166-237, respectively, at 273 K and 1 bar. Furthermore, these ionic porous materials serve as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition to epoxides under mild conditions (1 bar CO2, 60-80 °C, 12-24 h). Notably, the CO2 adsorption performances and catalytic activities of these HCPIPs are regulated by the hydroxyl groups within their structures, with enhancements observed as the number of hydroxyl groups increases. This work presents a facile and widely applicable method for constructing high-performance and task-specific HCPIPs.

Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogels from Controlled Kneading and Annealing-Induced Tightly Wound and Highly Entangled Natural Polysaccharides

Hydrogels usually are fabricated by using monomers or preexisting polymers in precursor solutions. Here, a polyelectrolyte complex biohydrogel (Bio-PEC hydrogel) made from a precursor dough, by kneading, annealing, and crosslinking the dough of two oppositely charged polysaccharides, cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) and anionic sodium hyaluronate (HA), photoinitiator (α-ketoglutaric acid), crosslinker glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and water of very small quantity is reported. Controlled kneading and annealing homogenized the dough with respect to transforming randomly distributed, individual polymer chains into tightly wound double-stranded structures, which, upon UV irradiation, covalently sparsely crosslinked into a highly entangled network and subsequently, upon fully swollen in water, results in Bio-PEC hydrogel, HACC/HA, exhibiting near-perfect elasticity, high tensile strength, and high swelling resistance. Via the same kneading and annealing, tetracarboxyphenylporphyrin iron (Fe-TCPP) metal nanoclusters are incorporated into HACC/HA to obtain photocatalytic, antibacterial, and biocompatible Bio-PEC hydrogel composite, Fe-TCPP@HACC/HA. Using SD rat models, the efficacy of Fe-TCPP@HACC/HA in inhibiting Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth in vitro and the ability to promote wound healing and scar-free skin regeneration in vivo, or its high potential as a wound dressing material for biomedical applications are demonstrated.

1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as suitable solvent for BF3: the case of alkyne hydration. Chemistry vs electrochemistry

In order to replace the expensive metal/ligand catalysts and classic toxic and volatile solvents, commonly used for the hydration of alkynes, the hydration reaction of alkynes was studied in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIm-BF4) adding boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3·Et2O) as catalyst. Different ionic liquids were used, varying the cation or the anion, in order to identify the best one, in terms of both efficiency and reduced costs. The developed method was efficaciously applied to different alkynes, achieving the desired hydration products with good yields. The results obtained using a conventional approach (i.e., adding BF3·Et2O) were compared with those achieved using BF3 electrogenerated in BMIm-BF4, demonstrating the possibility of obtaining the products of alkyne hydration with analogous or improved yields, using less hazardous precursors to generate the reactive species in situ. In particular, for terminal arylalkynes, the electrochemical route proved to be advantageous, yielding preferentially the hydration products vs the aldol condensation products. Importantly, the ability to recycle the ionic liquid in subsequent reactions was successfully demonstrated.

Fabrication of Swellable Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Polymers for CO2-Assisted Hydration of Propylene Epoxide

Swelling is a very common phenomenon in organic substances. However, the swelling behaviors of inorganic substances had rarely been reported. In this study, a new type of swellable organic-inorganic hybrid polymer (PIL@CHT) was designed and successfully synthesized through free-radical copolymerization of polymerizable phosphonium ionic liquid monomer and vinyl-functionalized hydrotalcite (CHT). The swelling behaviors of PIL@CHT in various solvents with a wide range of Hansen solubility parameters (δ_T) were investigated, and PIL@CHT exhibited excellent swellable capacity in the solvents with δ_T > 24.4 MPa^1/2. The swollen state of the hybrid PIL@CHT in water presented a network structure with a diameter of approximately 8-12 μm, and CHT particles were well dispersed to the channel of PIL. PIL@CHT was applied to catalyze the CO₂-assisted hydration of propylene oxide (PO), in which a cascade reaction including the cycloaddition of CO₂ and PO and the subsequent hydrolysis of propylene carbonate (PC) occurred. PIL@CHT, combining the active sites of PIL and CHT, synergistically catalyzed this cascade reaction and achieved a high yield (93.0%) and selectivity (98.2%) of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-MPG) under a low H₂O/PO ratio of 1.5/1. Moreover, the catalyst could be recycled seven times without any significant loss of catalytic activities and had good substrate generality.
