Frustrated Lewis pairs created by Ce-doped Bi2MoO6: A universal strategy to promote efficient utilization of H2O2 for Fenton-like photodegradation

Photo-Fenton-like technology based on H2O2 is considered as an ideal strategy to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for antibiotic degradation, but O2 overflow in the process severely limits the utilization efficiency of H2O2. Herein, we fabricate Bi2MoO6 (BMO) photocatalyst modified with Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) as a Fenton catalyst model for enhancing reuse of spilled O2. The FLPs created by the introduction of cerium and oxygen vacancy were found to contribute to regulate the electronic structure of BMO and further improve the acidic and basic properties of photocatalyst surface. More importantly, the frustrated acid and base sites can enhance the H2O2 and O2 interfacial adsorption process and provide an Ce4+-Ov-O2- active site on the surface of Ce-BMO nanosheets, which can promote O2/•O2-/1O2/H2O2 redox cycles to achieve high H2O2 utilization efficiency. Specifically, in the experiment using tetracycline as a photocatalytic degradation object, the degradation activity of Ce-BMO was 2.15 times higher than that of BMO pure phase. Quenching experiments and EPR assays also confirmed that 1O2 and •O2- were the dominant oxidative species. This study systematically reveals the design of Fenton photocatalytic active sites at the atomic scale and provides new insights into constructing FLPs photocatalysts with high H2O2 utilization efficiency.

Harnessing the power of natural minerals: A comprehensive review of their application as heterogeneous catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation

The release of untreated wastewater into water bodies has become a significant environmental concern, resulting in the accumulation of refractory organic pollutants that pose risks to human health and ecosystems. Wastewater treatment methods, including biological, physical, and chemical techniques, have limitations in achieving complete removal of the refractory pollutants. Chemical methods, particularly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), have gained special attention for their strong oxidation capacity and minimal secondary pollution. Among the various catalysts used in AOPs, natural minerals offer distinct advantages, such as low cost, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness. Currently, the utilization of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs lacks thorough investigation and review. This work addresses the need for a comprehensive review of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs. The structural characteristics and catalytic performance of different natural minerals are discussed, emphasizing their specific roles in AOPs. Furthermore, the review analyzes the influence of process factors, including catalyst dosage, oxidant addition, pH value, and temperature, on the catalytic performance of natural minerals. Strategies for enhancing the catalytic efficiency of AOPs mediated by natural minerals are explored, mainly including physical fields, reductant addition, and cocatalyst utilization. The review also examines the practical application prospects and main challenges associated with the use of natural minerals as heterogeneous catalysts in AOPs. This work contributes to the development of sustainable and efficient approaches for organic pollutant degradation in wastewater.

Enhanced peroxidase-like activity of MOF nanozymes by co-catalysis for colorimetric detection of cholesterol

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as nanozymes with a great development prospect due to their unique advantages. It is known that the current Fe-based or Cu-based MOF, etc., exhibits the catalytic activity of nanozymes through the Fenton catalytic reaction. And the conversion efficiency of the Fe3+/Fe2+ or Cu2+/Cu+ cycle is key to the catalytic activity. Therefore, we proposed a novel co-catalytic method to promote the reaction rate of the rate-limiting step of Cu2+/Cu+ conversion in the Fenton reaction of Cu2+/H2O2 to enhance the catalytic activity of the nanozymes. As a proof of concept, the MoCu-2MI nanozyme with high catalytic activity was successfully synthesized using Mo-doped Cu-2MI (2-methylimidazole). By using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as the chromogenic substrate, MoCu-2MI exhibited higher peroxidase-like activity than pure Cu-2MI. Then, it was confirmed that the newly introduced Mo played a crucial co-catalytic role by characterizing the possible catalytic mechanism. Specifically, Mo acted as a co-catalyst to accelerate the electron transfer in the system, and then promote the Cu2+/Cu+ cycle in the Cu-Fenton reaction, which was conducive to accelerating the production of a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from H2O2, and finally improve the activity. Ultimately, a biosensor platform combined with MoCu-2MI and cholesterol oxidase realized the one-step colorimetric detection of cholesterol in the range of 2-140 μM with the detection limit as low as 1.2 μM. This study provides a new strategy for regulating the activity of MOF nanozymes.

Discovery of Electronic Structure and Interfacial Interaction Features in Catalytic Activity

The selective transformation of inert bonds (C-H, C-O, C-C, C-F, etc.) via various catalysts is one of the most challenging areas, with applications in organic synthesis, materials science, and biological and pharmaceutical chemistry. The catalytic performance of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts can be rationally controlled in two ways: (i) electronic structure modulation of the active site, such as the metal center, ligands, and coordination modes, to improve the catalytic activity and stability and (ii) tuning intermolecular or interfacial interactions to promoting the reaction kinetics by accelerating the transmission of electrons between the catalyst and solvents or support. The rational design of catalysts based on adjustable features, such as metal (monometallic or bimetallic) active sites, crystal phase, ligands, solvents, and supports for inert bond activation under mild conditions remains a challenge. This Perspective summarizes the features of electronic structures, interfacial interactions, and their effects on molecular catalysis, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and natural mineral catalysis. The discovery of efficient catalysts could be promoted using machine-learning methods with high-performance descriptors. More attention should be paid to high-throughput quantum-chemical computations and experiments, automatic searches of chemical reaction pathways, and efficient machine-learning or deep-learning methods to accelerate catalyst design and synthesis in the future.
