Photoinduced Alkylsulfonylation and Cyanoalkylsulfonylation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman Adducts via Multicomponent Insertion of Sulfur Dioxide

General and convenient visible-light-promoted alkylsulfonylation and cyanoalkylsulfonylation of MBH adducts have been developed through the multicomponent insertion of sulfur dioxide, enabling the assembly of two C-S bonds to generate structurally diverse allylic alkylsulfones (43 examples in total). The reaction of MBH adducts with potassium alkyltrifluoroborates and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bis(sulfur dioxide) adduct afforded sulfones with generally good yields. Notably, the addition of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine as a base into the photocatalytic system led to yielding an alkyl sulfonyl unit and cyano group-anchored trisubstituted alkenes by utilizing cycloketone oxime esters as C-radical precursors. Both of these reactions have constructed two C-S bonds, and all desired products were obtained in moderate to excellent yields with complete stereospecificity.

Sulfination of Unactivated Allylic Alcohols via Sulfinate-Sulfone Rearrangement

A dehydrative cross-coupling of unactivated allylic alcohols with sulfinic acids was achieved under catalyst-free conditions. This reaction proceeded via allyl sulfination and concomitant allyl sulfinate-sulfone rearrangement. Various allylic sulfones could be obtained in good to excellent yields with water as the only byproduct. This study expands the synthetic toolbox for constructing allylic sulfone molecules.

Organophotoredox-Catalyzed Arylation and Aryl Sulfonylation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman Acetates with Diaryliodonium Reagents

We report an organophotoredox-catalyzed stereoselective allylic arylation of MBH acetates with a palette of diaryliodonium triflates (DAIRs) to provide the corresponding trisubstituted alkenes in moderate to good yields. The method could be extended to three-component coupling involving 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bis(sulfur dioxide) adduct (DABSO) as a sulfur dioxide surrogate for the synthesis of biologically relevant allylic sulfones. Both of these reactions were carried out under mild conditions featuring broad scope, robustness, and appreciable functional group tolerance.

Asymmetric sulfonylation with sulfur dioxide surrogates: a new access to enantiomerically enriched sulfones

Enantiomerically enriched sulfones occupy a prominent position in pharmaceutical chemistry and synthetic chemistry. Compared with conventional methods, a direct asymmetric sulfonylation reaction with the fixation of sulfur dioxide represents an attractive strategy for the rapid assembly of chiral sulfones with enantiopurity. In this highlight, we survey recent exciting advances in asymmetric sulfonylation by using sulfur dioxide surrogates, and discuss asymmetric induction modes, reaction mechanisms, substrate scope and opportunities for further studies.

Applications of Hantzsch Esters in Organocatalytic Enantioselective Synthesis

Hantzsch esters (1,4-dihydropyridine dicarboxylates) have become, in this century, very versatile reagents for enantioselective organic transformations. They can act as hydride transfer agents to reduce, regioselectively, a variety of multiple bonds, e.g., C=C and C=N, under mild reaction conditions. They are excellent reagents for the dearomatization of heteroaromatic substances, and participate readily in cascade processes. In the last few years, they have also become useful reagents for photoredox reactions. They can participate as sacrificial electron and hydrogen donors and when 4-alkyl or 4-acyl-substituted, they can act as alkyl or acyl radical transfer agents. These last reactions may take place in the presence or absence of a photocatalyst. This review surveys the literature published in this area in the last five years.

Photoredox-catalyzed intermolecular azidosulfonylation of alkenes with DABCO·(SO2)2, trimethylsilyl azide and thianthrenium salts

Synthesis of β-azido alkylsulfones through a photoredox-catalyzed azido sulfonylation of alkenes with DABCO·(SO2)2, trimethylsilyl azide and alkyl thianthrenium salts is developed.

Highly (E)-Selective Trisubstituted Alkene Synthesis by Low-Valent Titanium-Mediated Homolytic Cleavage of Alcohol C-O Bond

Ti-mediated homolytic C-O bond cleavage was useful for cascade radical-ionic reactions. Benzyl alcohols treated with TiCl₄(col) (col = 2,4,6-collidine) and Mn powder generated the corresponding benzyl radicals; in addition, their reaction with 2-carboxyallyl acetates and the subsequent elimination of the acetoxy group yielded α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with exclusive (E)-stereoselectivity. The simplicity of the procedure and its wide substrate scope represent a solution to the drawbacks associated with the reactions.

Multicomponent reactions and photo/electrochemistry join forces: atom economy meets energy efficiency

Visible-light photoredox catalysis has been regarded as an extremely powerful tool in organic chemistry, bringing the spotlight back to radical processes. The versatility of photocatalyzed reactions has already been demonstrated to be effective in providing alternative routes for cross-coupling as well as multicomponent reactions. The photocatalyst allows the generation of high-energy intermediates through light irradiation rather than using highly reactive reagents or harsh reaction conditions. In a similar vein, organic electrochemistry has experienced a fruitful renaissance as a tool for generating reactive intermediates without the need for any catalyst. Such milder approaches pose the basis toward higher selectivity and broader applicability. In photocatalyzed and electrochemical multicomponent reactions, the generation of the radical species acts as a starter of the cascade of events. This allows for diverse reactivity and the use of reagents is usually not covered by classical methods. Owing to the availability of cheaper and more standardized photo- and electrochemical reactors, as well as easily scalable flow-setups, it is not surprising that these two fields have become areas of increased research interest. Keeping these in view, this review is aimed at providing an overview of the synthetic approaches in the design of MCRs involving photoredox catalysis and/or electrochemical activation as a crucial step with particular focus on the choice of the difunctionalized reagent.

Enantioselective Radical SN2-Type Alkylation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman Adducts Using Dual Photoredox/Palladium Catalysis

An enantioselective radical alkylation of 4-alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines with Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts has been reported. The S_N2-type products are predominant. This reaction is enabled by dual photoredox/palladium catalysis. The alkylation products are provided in good yields with good regio- and enantioselectivity. The use of Ding's spiroketal-based bis(phosphine) (SKP) ligand is crucial to achieving satisfactory regio- and enantioselectivity. The resultant α,β-unsaturated ester can be easily reduced to a synthetically useful chiral allyl alcohol.

Photoinduced efficient synthesis of cyanoalkylsulfonylated oxindoles via sulfur dioxide insertion

A visible-light-promoted radical cascade reaction of N-arylacrylamide and cyclobutanone oxime esters with sulfur dioxide insertion is established. Mainly through the exploration of the visible light wavelength, it is found that the light source has a certain influence on the formation of cyanoalkylsulfonylated oxindoles, furnishing a range of sulfones in good to excellent yields. This protocol presents good functional group compatibility and does not require transition metals, photosensitizers, external bases, or oxidants.
