New advances on Au-magnetic organic hybrid core-shells in MRI, CT imaging, and drug delivery

Diaminonaphthalene functionalized LUS-1 as a fluorescence probe for simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and Fe3+ in Vetiver grass and Spinach

One of the important problems in the environment is heavy metal pollution, and fluorescence is one of the best methods for their detection due to its sensitivity, selectivity, and relatively rapid and easy operation. In this study, 1,8-diaminonaphthalene functionalized super-stable mesoporous silica (DAN-LUS-1) was synthesized and used as a fluorescence probe to identify Hg2+ and Fe3+ in food samples. The TGA and FT-IR spectra illustrated that 1,8-diaminonaphthalene was grafted into LUS-1. XRD patterns verified that the LUS-1 and functionalized mesoporous silica have a hexagonal symmetrical array of nano-channels. SEM images showed that the rod-like morphology of LUS-1 was preserved in DAN-LUS-1. Also, surface area and pore diameter decreased from 824 m2 g⁻1 and 3.61 nm for the pure LUS-1 to 748 m2 g⁻1 and 3.43 nm for the DAN-LUS-1, as determined by N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms. This reduction demonstrated that 1,8-diaminonaphthalene immobilized into the pore of LUS-1. The DAN-LUS-1 fluorescence properties as a chemical sensor were studied with a 340/407 nm excitation/emission wavelength that was quenched by Hg2+ and Fe3+ ions. Hg2+ and Fe3+ were quantified using the fluorescence response in the working range 8.25-13.79 × 10-6 and 3.84-10.71 × 10-6 mol/L, with detection limits of 8.5 × 10-8 M and 1.3 × 10-7 M, respectively. Hg2+ and Fe3+ were measured in vetiver grass and spinach. Since the Fe3+ quenching can move in the opposite direction with sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a hiding compound for Fe3+, consequently, the circuit logic system was established with Fe3+, Hg2+, and SHMP as inputs and the fluorescent quench as the output.

All-in-one nanotheranostic platform based on tumor microenvironment: new strategies in multimodal imaging and therapeutic protocol

Conventional tumor diagnosis and treatment approaches have significant limitations in clinical application, whereas personalized theranostistic nanoplatforms can ensure advanced diagnosis, precise treatment, and even a good prognosis in cancer. Tumor microenvironment (TME)-targeted therapeutic strategies offer absolute advantages in all aspects compared to tumor cell-targeted therapeutic strategies. It is essential to create a TME-responsive all-in-one nanotheranostic platform to facilitate individualized tumor treatment. Based on the TME-responsive multifunctional nanotheranostic platform, we focus on the combined use of multimodal imaging and therapeutic protocols and summary and outlooks on the latest advanced nanomaterials and structures for creating the integrated nanotheranostic system based on material science, which provide insights and reflections on the development of innovative TME-targeting tools for cancer theranostics.

One-Pot Synthesis of Silica-Coated Gold Nanostructures Loaded with Cyanine 5.5 for Cell Imaging by SERS Spectroscopy

Anisotropic gold nanoparticles have been recognized as promising agents for medical diagnostics and cancer therapy due to their wide functionality, photothermal effect, and ability for optical signal amplification in the near-infrared range. In this work, a simple and rapid method for the preparation of bone-shaped gold nanoparticles coated with a dye-impregnated silica shell with an aminated surface is proposed. The possibility of further functionalization the nanostructures with a delivery vector using folic acid as an example is demonstrated. The average size of the resulting tags does not exceed 70 nm, meeting the criteria of cell endocytosis. The prepared tags exhibit surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra at excitation with lasers of 632.8 and 785 nm. Cell imaging is performed on HeLa cells based on the most pronounced SERS bands as a tracking signal. The obtained images, along with scanning electron microscopy of cell samples, revealed the tendency of tags to agglomerate during endocytosis followed by the "hot spots" effect. To evaluate the toxic and proliferative effect of the nanotags, an MTT assay was performed with two HeLa and HEP G2 cell lines. The results revealed higher viability for HEP G2 cells.

Recent advances in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for wound healing and antimicrobial applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystal-like organic structures such as cartography buildings prepared from appropriately pre-designed construction block precursors. Moreover, after the expansion of the first COF in 2005, numerous researchers have been developing different materials for versatile applications such as sensing/imaging, cancer theranostics, drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing, and antimicrobials. COFs have harmonious pore size, enduring porosity, thermal stability, and low density. In addition, a wide variety of functional groups could be implanted during their construction to provide desired constituents, including antibodies and enzymes. The reticular organic frameworks comprising porous hybrid materials connected via a covalent bond have been studied for improving wound healing and dressing applications due to their long-standing antibacterial properties. Several COF-based systems have been planned for controlled drug delivery with wound healing purposes, targeting drugs to efficiently inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms at the wound spot. In addition, COFs can be deployed for combinational therapy using photodynamic and photothermal antibacterial therapy along with drug delivery for healing chronic wounds and bacterial infections. Herein, the most recent advancements pertaining to the applications of COF-based systems against bacterial infections and for wound healing are considered, concentrating on challenges and future guidelines.

Silica-coated modified magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2@(BuSO3H)3) as an efficient adsorbent for Pd2+ removal

It is crucial to fabricate cost-effective and efficient strategies for monitoring and eliminating hazardous metals in the water supplies. Among the many techniques, adsorption is one of the most powerful and facile ways for eliminating pollutants from effluents. It is also crucial to engineering high-performance low-cost adsorbents. In this regard, herein, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@(BuSO₃H)₃ as a modified core-shell magnetic silica nanoparticle embodies good selectivity to extract toxic metal ions from aquatic media. The present work investigated the removal performance of the magnetic adsorbent towards Pd²⁺ cation amongst the other heavy metal ions including Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ in aqueous solution. The flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was utilized to assess the removal efficiency of the adsorbent. Several experimental parameters including elution condition, initial Pd(II) concentration, adsorbent dosage, initial pH of the solution, and contact time were explored to achieve the optimal conditions. The data of adsorption were very well with the Langmuir isotherm model, according to the adsorption isotherm mechanism experiments. In conclusion, this study lays the way for the development of novel magnetic adsorbents with high removal efficiencies for the removal of toxic metal ions from aqueous environment.

Advanced MXene-Based Micro- and Nanosystems for Targeted Drug Delivery in Cancer Therapy

MXenes with unique mechanical, optical, electronic, and thermal properties along with a specific large surface area for surface functionalization/modification, high electrical conductivity, magnetic properties, biocompatibility, and low toxicity have been explored as attractive candidates for the targeted delivery of drugs in cancer therapy. These two-dimensional materials have garnered much attention in the field of cancer therapy since they have shown suitable photothermal effects, biocompatibility, and luminescence properties. However, outstanding challenging issues regarding their pharmacokinetics, biosafety, targeting properties, optimized functionalization, synthesis/reaction conditions, and clinical translational studies still need to be addressed. Herein, recent advances and upcoming challenges in the design of advanced targeted drug delivery micro- and nanosystems in cancer therapy using MXenes have been discussed to motivate researchers to further investigate this field of science.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: Current Advances in Nanomedicine, Drug Delivery and MRI

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have evolved tremendously during recent years, in part due to the rapid expansion of nanotechnology and to their active magnetic core with a high surface-to-volume ratio, while their surface functionalization opened the door to a plethora of drug, gene and bioactive molecule immobilization. Taming the high reactivity of the magnetic core was achieved by various functionalization techniques, producing MNPs tailored for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular or neurological disease, tumors and cancer. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are established at the core of drug-delivery systems and could act as efficient agents for MFH (magnetic fluid hyperthermia). Depending on the functionalization molecule and intrinsic morphological features, MNPs now cover a broad scope which the current review aims to overview. Considering the exponential expansion of the field, the current review will be limited to roughly the past three years.

Recent advances in the application of magnetic bio-polymers as catalysts in multicomponent reactions

Magnetic nanoparticles have attracted significant attention due to their high surface area and superparamagnetic properties. Bio-polymers composed of polysaccharides including alginate, cellulose, glucose, dextrin, chitosan, and starch can be immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles. Bio-polymers can be obtained from natural sources, such as plants, tunicates, algae, and bacteria. Bio-polymers obtained from natural sources have attracted attention due to their various properties including efficient functional groups, non-toxicity, low cost, availability, and biocompatibility. According to the targets of "green chemistry", the application of bio-polymers is effective in reducing pollution. Furthermore, they are excellent agents for the functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles to yield nanomagnetic bio-polymers, which can be applied as recoverable and eco-friendly catalysts in multicomponent reactions.

Recent Advances of Magnetic Gold Hybrids and Nanocomposites, and Their Potential Biological Applications

Magnetic gold nanoparticles (mGNP) have become a great interest of research for nanomaterial scientists because of their significant magnetic and plasmonic properties applicable in biomedical applications. Various synthetic approaches and surface modification techniques have been used for mGNP including the most common being the coprecipitation, thermal decomposition, and microemulsion methods in addition to the Brust Schiffrin technique, which involves the reduction of metal precursors in a two-phase system (water and toluene) in the presence of alkanethiol. The hybrid magnetic–plasmonic nanoparticles based on iron core and gold shell are being considered as potential theranostic agents. In this critical review, in addition to future works, we have summarized recent developments for synthesis and surface modification of mGNP with their applications in modern biomedical science such as drug and gene delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, and neuro-regeneration, neuro-degenerative and arthritic disorders. This review includes techniques and biological applications of mGNP majorly based on research from the previous six years.

Magnetically recoverable catalysts for the preparation of pyridine derivatives: an overview

Magnetically recoverable nano-catalysts can be readily separated from the reaction medium using an external magnet. In recent years, chemistry researchers have employed them as catalysts in chemical reactions. The high surface area, simple preparation, and modification are among their major advantages. Pyridine derivatives are an important category of heterocyclic compounds, which show a wide range of excellent biological activities, including IKK-β inhibitors, anti-microbial agents, A2A adenosine receptor antagonists, inhibitors of HIV-1 integrase, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-Parkinsonism. Recently, the catalytic activity of magnetic nanoparticles was investigated in multicomponent reactions in the synthesis of pyridine derivatives, which is discussed in this review.
