Improved performance of soy protein adhesive with melamine-urea-formaldehyde prepolymer

Synthesis of biomass hyperbranched polyamide resin from cellulose and citric acid for wood adhesive

Traditional wood adhesives have the problems of excessive dependence on fossil resources and environmental pollution. Cellulose, a renewable biomass resource with a low price and huge output, provides a basis for preparing biomass wood adhesives. In this study, a new type of polyamide resin was prepared by modifying microcrystalline cellulose and reacting with natural citric acid. Specifically, toluenesulfonyl cellulose (TS) was synthesized, and functional amino cellulose (AC) was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution reaction with hyperbranched polyamide (HP). Then cellulose-based hyperbranched polyamide resin (CHP) was prepared by polycondensation with citric acid. The structure of CHP resin was investigated by FTIR, XPS, 13C NMR and GPC, and plywood was prepared to study its mechanical properties. Due to the formation of hyperbranched cross-linked network structure inside the resin, the prepared plywood has excellent properties. The dry shear strength reaches 2.24 MPa, and the strength reaches 1.25 and 1.31 MPa after soaking in water at 63 °C and 93 °C for 3 h. The resin in this study has a simple preparation process and excellent performance, which provides a solid foundation for developing high-performance cellulose-based wood adhesives.

Preparation and Characterization of Soybean Protein Adhesives Modified with an Environmental-Friendly Tannin-Based Resin

Soybean protein-based adhesives are limited in their application due to their poor wet bonding strength and poor water resistance. Herein, we prepared a novel, environmentally friendly soybean protein-based adhesive by adding tannin-based resin (TR) to improve the performance of water resistance and wet bonding strength. The active sites of TR reacted with the soybean protein and its functional groups and formed strong cross-linked network structures, which improved the cross-link density of the adhesives and then improved the water resistance. The residual rate increased to 81.06% when 20 wt%TR was added, and the water resistance bonding strength reached 1.07 MPa, which fully met the Chinese national requirements for plywood (Class II, ≥0.7 MPa). SEM observations were performed on the fracture surfaces of all modified SPI adhesives after curing. The modified adhesive has a denser and smooth cross-section. Based on the TG and DTG plots, the thermal stability performance of the TR-modified SPI adhesive was improved when TR was added. The total weight loss of the adhesive decreased from 65.13% to 58.87%. This study provides a method for preparing low-cost and high-performance, environmentally friendly adhesives.

Preparation of high complex concentration emulsion stabilized by soy protein/dextran sulfate composite particles

BACKGROUND

Soy protein isolate (SPI) could be used as an emulsifier to stabilize emulsions, while SPI is unstable under low acidic conditions. The stable composite particles of SPI and dextran sulfate (DS) could be formed by the electrostatic interaction at the pH was 3.5. And the SPI/DS composite particles were used to prepare the high complex concentration emulsion. The stabilization properties of high complex concentration emulsion were investigated.

RESULTS

Compared to uncompounded SPI, the particle size of SPI/DS composite particles was smaller at 1.52 μm, and the absolute value of the potential increased to 19.9 mV when the mass ratio of SPI to DS was 1:1 and the pH was 3.5. With the DS ratio increased, the solubility of the composite particles increased to 14.44 times of the untreated protein at pH 3.5, while the surface hydrophobicity decreased. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds were the main forces between SPI and DS, and DS was electrostatically adsorbed on the surface of SPI. The emulsion stability significantly enhanced with the increase of complex concentration (38.88 times higher than at 1% concentration), the emulsion average droplet size was the lowest (9.64 μm), and the absolute value of potential was the highest (46.67 mV) when the mass ratio of SPI to DS was 1:1 and the complex concentration of 8%. The stability of the emulsion against freezing was improved.

CONCLUSION

The SPI/DS complex has high solubility and stability under low acidic conditions, and the SPI/DS complex' emulsion has a well stability. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Boosting capacitive performance of N, S co-doped hierarchical porous lignin-derived carbon via self-assembly assisted template-coupled activation

Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials show promise for use as supercapacitor electrodes, but the tradeoff between surface area and the heteroatom dopant levels limits the supercapacitive performance. Here, we modulated the pore structure and surface dopants of N, S co-doped hierarchical porous lignin-derived carbon (NS-HPLC-K) via self-assembly assisted template-coupled activation. The ingenious assembly of lignin micelles and sulfomethylated melamine into a magnesium carbonate basic template greatly promoted the KOH activation process, which endowed the NS-HPLC-K with uniform distributions of activated N/S dopants and highly accessible nanosized pores. The optimized NS-HPLC-K exhibited a three-dimensional hierarchically porous architecture composed of wrinkled nanosheets and a high specific surface area of 2538.3 ± 9.5 m²/g with a rational N content of 3.19 ± 0.01 at.%, which boosted the electrical double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. Consequently, the NS-HPLC-K supercapacitor electrode delivered a superior gravimetric capacitance of 393 F/g at 0.5 A/g. Furthermore, the assembled coin-type supercapacitor showed good energy-power characteristics and cycling stability. This work provides a novel idea for designing eco-friendly porous carbons for use in advanced supercapacitors.
