Promising activated carbon derived from sugarcane tip as electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors

Synthesis of Sustainable Lignin Precursors for Hierarchical Porous Carbons and Their Efficient Performance in Energy Storage Applications

Lignin-derived porous carbons have great potential for energy storage applications. However, their traditional synthesis requires highly corrosive activating agents in order to produce porous structures. In this work, an environmentally friendly and unique method has been developed for preparing lignin-based 3D spherical porous carbons (LSPCs). Dropwise injection of a lignin solution containing PVA sacrificial templates into liquid nitrogen produces tiny spheres that are lyophilized and carbonized to produce LSPCs. Most of the synthesized samples possess excellent specific surface areas (426.6-790.5 m2/g) along with hierarchical micro- and mesoporous morphologies. When tested in supercapacitor applications, LSPC-28 demonstrates a superior specific capacitance of 102.3 F/g at 0.5 A/g, excellent rate capability with 70.3% capacitance retention at 20 A/g, and a commendable energy density of 2.1 Wh/kg at 250 W/kg. These materials (LSPC-46) also show promising performance as an anode material in sodium-ion batteries with high reversible capacity (110 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1), high Coulombic efficiency, and excellent cycling stability. This novel and green technique is anticipated to facilitate the scalability of lignin-based porous carbons and open a range of research opportunities for energy storage applications.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Sugarcane Bagasse-Derived Activated Carbon via a High-Energy Ball Milling Treatment

Activated carbon (AC) from sugarcane bagasse was prepared using dry chemical activation with KOH. It was then subjected to a high-energy ball milling (HEBM) treatment under various milling speeds (600, 1200 and 1800 rpm) to produce AC nanoparticles from micro-size particles. The AC samples after the HEBM treatment exhibited reduced particle sizes, increased mesopore volume and a rich surface oxygen content, which contribute to higher pseudocapacitance. Notably, different HEBM speeds were used to find a good electrochemical performance. As a result, the AC/BM12 material, subjected to HEBM at 1200 rpm for 30 min, exhibited the highest specific capacitance, 257 F g^-1, at a current density 0.5 A g^-1. This is about 2.4 times higher than that of the AC sample. Moreover, the excellence capacitance retention of this sample was 93.5% after a 3000-cycle test at a current density of 5 A g^-1. Remarkably, a coin cell electrode assembly was fabricated using the AC/BM12 material in a 1 M LiPF₆ electrolyte. It exhibited a specific capacitance of 110 F g^-1 with a high energy density of 27.9 W h kg^-1.

Sawdust-Derived Activated Carbon with Hierarchical Pores for High-Performance Symmetric Supercapacitors

The recyclable utilization of waste biomass is increasingly important for the development of a sustainable society. Here, the sawdust-derived activated carbon (SD-AC) has been prepared via a convenient H₃PO₄-based activation method and further trialed as an electrode for use as a high-performance symmetric supercapacitor. The as-prepared SD-AC possesses a hierarchically porous structure with micropores (0.55 nm) and mesopores (2.58 nm), accounting for its high specific surface area of 621 m² g⁻¹, with a pore volume of 0.35 cm³ g⁻¹. Such a hierarchically porous structure can offer a favorable pathway for fast ion penetration and transportation, enhancing its electrochemical performance. As a result, the SD-AC electrode exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of up to 244.1 F g⁻¹ at 1.0 A g⁻¹, a high rate capability (129.06 F g⁻¹ at 20 A g⁻¹), and an excellent cycling performance, with 87% retention over 10,000 cycles at 10 A g⁻¹. Of particular note is that the SD-AC-based symmetric supercapacitor achieves a maximum energy density of 19.9 Wh kg⁻¹ at the power density of 650 W kg⁻¹, with a long-term cycle lifespan. This work showcases the recyclable utilization of waste biomass for the preparation of high-value activated carbon for efficient energy storage.
