Carbon quantum dots as a turn-on fluorescent probe for the sensitive detection of Cd2

In this study, fluorescent carbon dots were synthesized for the first time using ammonium citrate and glutamic acid as precursors via a one-pot hydrothermal method. The synthesized carbon dots emit blue fluorescence at 436 nm (excited at 320 nm) and demonstrate excellent photobleaching resistance and fluorescence stability in high salt environments. Within the range of 1-25 μM, the fluorescence of CDs gradually increases with the increasing concentration of Cd2+, reaching a limit of detection as low as 13 nM. This phenomenon could be ascribed to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence, a result of Cd2+ forming complexes with the abundant surface functional groups such as CN-, -COOH, -OH, -NH2 in CDs. Furthermore, this turn-on fluorescent probe has been successfully used for the detection of Cd2+ in tap water and lake water, providing an efficient and sensitive method for the analysis of environmental metals.

Iron Oxide-Doped Carbon Nanoparticles Stabilised with Functionally Modified Hyperbranched Polyglycerol for Cd2+ Sensing and Photodynamic Antibacterial Therapeutic Applications

Nanoscale materials are being developed from individual particles to multi-component assemblies, with carbon nanomaterials being particularly useful in bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics due to their unique optical properties, enhanced by surface passivation and chemical doping. Noble metals are commonly used in conjunction with carbon-based nanomaterials for the synthesis of nanohybrids. Carbon-based materials can function as photosensitizers and effective carriers in photodynamic therapy, enabling the use of combined treatment approaches. The hydrophobicity and agglomeration tendency of carbon nanoparticles pose a drawback. This study is an attempt to overcome these limitations, which involved the synthesis of iron oxide-doped carbon nanoparticles through the carbonisation of citric acid and hexamethylene tetramine, followed by doping them with iron oxide. The as synthesized iron oxide-doped carbon nanoparticles were stabilised with fluorescently modified hyperbranched polyglycerol. The efficacy of these nanoparticles in photodynamic antibacterial therapy and Cd (II) ion sensing was investigated. The selectivity of stabilised nanoparticles against Cd2+ ion is presented in the current study. The current study also compares the antibacterial efficacy of undoped, iron oxide-doped and stabilised nanoparticle systems. The possible toxic effects of the synthesised nanosystems were investigated in order to assess their suitability for biomedical applications and establish their safety profile.

Cd2+-Specific Fluorescence Response of Methoxy-Substituted N,N-Bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-2-methoxyaniline Derivatives

The N3O1 tetradentate ligand, TriMeOBQMOA (N,N-bis(5,6,7-trimethoxy-2-quinolylmethyl)-2-methoxyaniline), was developed as a Cd2+-specific fluorescent sensor. The structure of TriMeOBQMOA is half of TriMeOBAPTQ (N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(5,6,7-trimethoxy-2-quinolylmethyl)-1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane), which is a tetrakisquinoline derivative of the well-known calcium chelator BAPTA (1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid). The fluorescent Cd2+ selectivity of TriMeOBAPTQ (IZn/ICd = 5.3% in the presence of 3 equiv of metal ions in MeOH-HEPES buffer (9:1)) comes from the formation of fluorescent dinuclear cadmium (M2L) and nonfluorescent OH-bridged dizinc ((μ-OH)M2L) complexes. TriMeOBQMOA also exhibits excellent Cd2+ specificity in fluorescence enhancement (IZn/ICd = 2.3% in the presence of 5 equiv of metal ions in DMF-HEPES buffer (1:1, HEPES 50 mM, KCl 0.1 M, pH = 7.5)) via substantial formation of a highly fluorescent bis(μ-chloro)dinuclear cadmium complex ([Cd2(μ-Cl)2L2]2+), which is in equilibrium with the mononuclear Cd2+ complex ([CdLCl]+), and extremely poor stability of the TriMeOBQMOA-Zn2+ complex. The all-nitrogen derivatives of BQMOA and BAPTQ, namely, N,N-BQDMPHEN (N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethyl-1,2-phenylenediamine) and BPDTQ (N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-quinolylmethyl)-2,2'-(N,N'-dimethylethylenediamino)dianiline), respectively, and their methoxy-substituted derivatives were also prepared, and the fluorescent metal ion sensing properties are discussed.

Highly sensitive sensing of DPA by lanthanide metal-organic frameworks and detection of fiber membranes

The detection of 2,6-pyridinecarboxylic acid (DPA), as a biomarker of Bacillus anthracis, has attracted wide attention. In previous reports of DPA detection, fluorescent probes may not have high specificity. Therefore, the rational design and development of fluorescent sensors with excellent performance is of great significance for the detection of DPA. In this study, two novel lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method using 3-polyfluorobiphenyl-3 ', 4,5 ' -tricarboxylic acid (H2FPTA) as ligand. Studies have shown that Ln-MOFs can detect DPA in real time, with detection limits of 0.54 μM and 0.67 μM, respectively, and have a high recovery rate (95 % -108 %) in fetal bovine serum. As a self-calibration sensor, other substances in the blood can be clearly distinguished by a two-dimensional fluorescence code diagram. After the Ln-MOFs were spun into nanofiber membranes, they responded quickly to DPA. This increases practicability and provides a promising idea for the development of simple and efficient ratio sensors.

A novel turn-on fluorescent probe for detection of pH in extremely acidic environment and its application

A water-soluble turn-on fluorescent probe PNAP for pH has been designed and synthesized. PNAP was consist of pyrene as fluorophore and morpholine as receptor. Owing to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effect, the fluorescence of PNAP was quenched, while PNAP exhibited a remarkable "turn-on" fluorescence with the increase of acidity. Notably for its pKa of 2.15, PNAP was one of the pH fluorescent probes used in extremely acidic environments. Furthermore, PNAP also displayed good repeatability, strong anti-ion interference ability, high sensitivity and selectivity toward pH. In addition, PNAP has been successfully applied to the test strips and monitor the pH of environment water samples and realistic samples, showing its good promising prospect.

A novel HBI-based ratiometric fluorescent probe for rapid detection of trifluoroborate

A 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (HBI)-based ratiometric fluorescent probe, known as BTEP, was synthesized using 5-bromosalicylaldehyde as the raw material via Sonogashira coupling and condensation reaction. This probe was designed for rapid detection of boron trifluoride solutions and gases. The N and O coordination atoms in the probe undergo a boron difluoride addition with BF3, which affects the process of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) leading to a blue shift of fluorescence emission. Obvious changes in the fluorescence signal can be observed within 60 seconds. The introduction of an acetylene trimethylsilane fragment increases the conjugate plane and is beneficial to improving the selectivity of the probe. The I408/I479 fluorescence ratio of the probe displays a linear relationship with the concentration of BF3 in the range of 5-50 μM, with a detection of limit as low as 69.5 nM. Furthermore, the probe demonstrates specific and selective recognition of BF3 among eight common interference substances. Test strips prepared using BTEP have the capability of real-time naked-eye detection of trace BF3 gas.

Recent Progress on Fluorescent Probes in Heavy Metal Determinations for Food Safety: A Review

One of the main challenges faced in food safety is the accumulation of toxic heavy metals from environmental sources, which can sequentially endanger human health when they are consumed. It is invaluable to establish a practical assay for the determination of heavy metals for food safety. Among the current detection methods, technology based on fluorescent probes, with the advantages of sensitivity, convenience, accuracy, cost, and reliability, has recently shown pluralistic applications in the food industry, which is significant to ensure food safety. Hence, this review systematically presents the recent progress on novel fluorescent probes in determining heavy metals for food safety over the past five years, according to fluorophores and newly emerging sensing cores, which could contribute to broadening the prospects of fluorescent materials and establishing more practical assays for heavy metal determinations.

Rapid Detection of Cd2+ Ions in the Aqueous Medium Using a Highly Sensitive and Selective Turn-On Fluorescent Chemosensor

Herein, a novel optical chemosensor, (CM1 = 2, 6-di((E)-benzylidene)-4-methylcyclohexan-1-one), was designed/synthesized and characterized by ¹H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The experimental observations indicated that CM1 is an efficient and selective chemosensor towards Cd²⁺, even in the presence of other metal ions, such as Mn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Co^2+, Ce³⁺, K⁺, Hg²⁺,^, and Zn²⁺ in the aqueous medium. The newly synthesized chemosensor, CM1, showed a significant change in the fluorescence emission spectrum upon coordination with Cd²⁺. The formation of the Cd²⁺ complex with CM1 was confirmed from the fluorometric response. The 1:2 combination of Cd²⁺ with CM1 was found optimum for the desired optical properties, which was confirmed through fluorescent titration, Job's plot, and DFT calculation. Moreover, CM1 showed high sensitivity towards Cd²⁺ with a very low detection limit (19.25 nM). Additionally, the CM1 was recovered and recycled by the addition of EDTA solution that combines with Cd²⁺ ion and, hence, frees up the chemosensor.

A Benzothiadiazole-Based Self-Assembled Cage for Cadmium Detection

A turn-on fluorescent probe, cage 1, was efficiently self-assembled by condensing 4,4'-(benzothiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzaldehyde and TREN in chloroform. The formation of cage 1 was characterized and confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and theoretical calculations. The yield of cage 1 could be controlled by tuning the reaction conditions, such as the precursor concentration. Interestingly, the addition of 10 equiv of Cd²⁺ relative to cage 1 could increase the fluorescence almost seven-fold. ¹H NMR and fluorescence experiments indicating fluorescence enhancement may be caused by the decomposition of cage 1. Such a high selectivity toward Cd²⁺ implies that the cage could potentially be employed in cadmium detection.

Magnetic relaxation switching assay based on three-dimensional assembly of Fe3O4@ZIF-8 for detection of cadmium ions

The design and construction of a novel magnetic resonance switch (MRS) sensor for cadmium ion (Cd2+) detection is described. Fe3O4@ZIF-8 was synthesized through seed-mediated growth of dimercaptosuccinic acid-coated Fe3O4. Fe3O4@ZIF-8 with high relaxation value (163.086 mM-1 s-1) and large negative zeta potential (-20.69 mV) exhibited good magnetic relaxation performance and water solubility. The successfully synthesized Fe3O4@ZIF-8 was used to develop an immune recognition-based MOFs-MRS sensor for highly sensitive detection of Cd2+. The proposed MRS detected a wide linear range of Cd2+ concentration from 2 to 200 ng mL-1 with a low limit of detection of 0.65 ng mL-1 (S/N = 3), and displayed high selectivity towards matrix interference. The robust sensing system was effective even in a complex sample matrix, enabling the quantitative analysis of Cd2+ content in rice samples and drinking water samples with good reliability. Recoveries of Cd2+ ranged from 91.50 to 112.05% for spiked drinking water and from 95.86 to 110.45% for spiked rice samples. The versatility of Fe3O4@ZIF-8 with customized relaxation responses could allow the adaptation of magnetic resonance platforms for food safety purposes.

Bifunctional Nitrogen and Fluorine Co-Doped Carbon Dots for Selective Detection of Copper and Sulfide Ions in Real Water Samples

Copper ions (Cu²⁺) and sulfur ions (S²⁻) are important elements widely used in industry. However, these ions have the risk of polluting the water environment. Therefore, rapid and quantitative detection methods for Cu²⁺ and S²⁻ are urgently required. Using 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid and L-lysine as precursors, nitrogen and fluorine co-doped dots (N, F-CDs) were synthesized in this study via a hydrothermal method. The aqueous N, F-CDs showed excellent stability, exhibited satisfactory selectivity and excellent anti-interference ability for Cu²⁺ detection. The N, F-CDs, based on the redox reactions for selective and quantitative detection of Cu²⁺, showed a wide linear range (0–200 μM) with a detection limit (215 nM). By forming the N, F-CDs@Cu²⁺ sensing platform and based on the high affinity of S²⁻ to Cu²⁺, the N, F-CDs@Cu²⁺ can specifically detect S²⁻ over a linear range of 0–200 μM with a detection limit of 347 nM. In addition, these fluorescent probes achieved good results when used for Cu²⁺ and S²⁻ detection in environmental water samples, implying the good potential for applications.

A reasonably constructed fluorescent chemosensor based on the dicyanoisophorone skeleton for the discriminative sensing of Fe3+ and Hg2+ as well as imaging in HeLa cells and zebrafish

In this study, a new fluorescent sensor dicyanoisophorone Rhodanine-3-acetic acid (DCI-RDA) (DCI-RDA) has been developed by employing a DCI-based push–pull dye as the fluorophore and RDA as the recognition moiety for the simultaneous sensing of Fe³⁺ and Hg²⁺ with a large Stokes Shift (162 nm), high selectivity and sensitivity, and low LOD (1.468 μM for Fe³⁺ and 0.305 μM for Hg²⁺). In particular, DCI-RDA has a short response time (30 s). The Job's plot method in combination with ¹H NMR titration and theoretical calculations was used to determine the stoichiometry of both DCI-RDA-Fe³⁺/Hg²⁺ complexes to be 1 : 1. Moreover, DCI-RDA is applied as a fluorescent probe for imaging in HeLa cells and zebrafish, indicating that it can be potentially applied for Fe³⁺/Hg²⁺ sensing in the field of biology.

Recent Progress in Fluorescent Probes For Metal Ion Detection

All forms of life have absolute request for metal elements, because metal elements are instrumental in various fundamental processes. Fluorescent probes have been widely used due to their ease of operation, good selectivity, high spatial and temporal resolution, and high sensitivity. In this paper, the research progress of various metal ion (Fe3+,Fe2+,Cu2+,Zn2+,Hg2+,Pb2+,Cd2+) fluorescent probes in recent years has been reviewed, and the fluorescence probes prepared with different structures and materials in different environments are introduced. It is of great significance to improve the sensing performance on metal ions. This research has a wide prospect in the application fields of fluorescence sensing, quantitative analysis, biomedicine and so on. This paper discusses about the development and applications of metal fluorescent probes in future.

A Water Soluble 2-Phenyl-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole Based Probe: Antimicrobial Activity and Colorimetric/Fluorescence pH Response

The growing demand of responsive tools for biological and biomedical applications pushes towards new low-cost probes easy to synthesize and versatile. Current optical probes are theranostic tools simultaneously responsive to biological parameters/analyte and therapeutically operating. Among the optical methods for pH monitoring, simple small organic molecules including multifunctional probes for simultaneous biological activity being highly desired by scientists and technicians. Here, we present a novel pH-responsive probe with a three-ring heteroaromatic pattern and a flexible cationic chain. The novel molecule shows real-time naked-eye colorimetric and fluorescence response in the slightly acidic pH range besides its excellent solubility both in the organic phase and in water. In addition, the small probe shows significant antibacterial activity, particularly against Escherichia coli. Single-crystal X-ray study and density functional theory (DFT) calculations rationalize the molecule spectroscopic response. Finally, molecular dynamics (MD) elucidate the interactions between the probe and a model cell membrane.
