Theoretical evaluation of the performance of IRMOFs and M-MOF-74 in the formation of 5-fluorouracil@MOF

CO2 and CO Capture on the ZnO Surface: A GCMC and Electronic Structure Study

The amount of polluting gases released into the atmosphere has grown drastically. Among them, it is possible to cite the release of CO2 and CO gases on a large scale as one of the products of the complete and incomplete combustion of petroleum-derived fuels. It is worth noting that the production of energy by burning fossil fuels supplies the energy demand but causes environmental damage, and several studies have addressed the reduction. One of them is using materials with the potential to capture these gases. The experimental and theoretical studies have significant contributions that promote advances in this area. Among the materials investigated, ZnO has emerged, demonstrating the considerable potential for capturing various gases, including CO2 and CO. This work used density functional theory (DFT) and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Method (GCMC) to investigate the adsorption of CO2 and CO on the surface of Zinc oxide (ZnO) to obtain adsorption isotherms and interaction energy and the interaction nature. The results suggest that CO2 adsorption slightly changed the angle of the O-C-O to values less than 180°. For the CO, its carbon atom interacts simultaneously with Zn and O of the ZnO surface. However, CO interactions have an ionic character with a lower binding energy value than the CO2 interaction. The energies calculated using the PM6 and DFT methods generated results compatible with the experimental values. In applications involving a mixture of these two gases, the adsorption of CO2 should be favored, and there may be inhibition of the adsorption of CO for high CO2 concentrations.

Dual Application: p-CuS/n-ZnS Nanocomposite Construction for High-Efficiency Colorimetric Determination and Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline in Water

Herein, CuS was incorporated with ZnS to form a novel nanocomposite via cation exchange, and the product was then employed for dual application of the colorimetric determination and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) in water. The formed p-n heterojunction provided an improved gap width and electron mobility, which could rapidly catalyze H₂O₂ to produce plenty of •OH, supporting a color conversion with TMB. Meanwhile, the addition of TC could lead to the further enhancement in colorimetric signal, and the distinction level was sensitive to the target amount. Additionally, under light conditions, the p-CuS/n-ZnS could produce •O₂^-, •OH, and h⁺ through photocatalysis, and these ions could degrade the TC via oxidation. In the colorimetric determination of TC, the signal responses were obtained within 10 min, and the detection limit was 20.94 nM. The recovery rates were 99% and 106% for the water samples from Ganjiang river. In the photocatalytic degradation, the TC was degraded by 91% within 120 min, which was threefold that of ZnS. Meanwhile, the morphology feature of the p-CuS/n-ZnS remained after multiple uses, suggesting a favorable material stability. This strategy provides application prospects for the monitoring and control of antibiotics in water.

Advances in plasmonic-based MOF composites, their bio-applications and perspectives in this field

INTRODUCTION

Nanomaterials have been used for bio-applications since the late 20st century. In an attempt to tailor and optimize their properties, and by extension their efficiency, composites have attracted considerable attention. In this regard, recent studies on plasmonic nanoparticles and metal-organic framework (NP@MOF) composites suggested these materials show great promise in this field.

AREAS COVERED

This review focused on the more recent scientific advances in the synthetic strategies to optimize plasmonic MOF nanocomposites currently available, as well as their bio-application, particularly as biosensors and therapy.

EXPERT OPINION

Plasmonic MOF nanocomposites have shown great potential as they combine the properties of both materials with proven efficiency in bio-application. On the one hand, nanoMOFs have proven their potential particularly as drug nanocarriers, owing to their exceptional porosity and tunability. On the other hand, plasmonic nanoparticles have been an asset for imaging and phototherapy. Different strategies have been reported to develop these nanocomposites, mainly including core-shell, encapsulation, and in situ reduction. In addition, advanced composite structures should be considered, such as mixed metal nanoparticles, hollow structures or the combination of several approaches. Specifically, plasmonic MOF nanocomposites prove to be attractive stimuli responsive drug delivery systems, phototherapeutic agents as well as highly sensitive biosensors.

Combined Ibuprofen and Curcumin Delivery Using Mg-MOF-74 as a Single Nanocarrier

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively used as drug delivery platforms because of their considerable textural properties and physiochemical tunability. However, most medicinal treatments often administer multiple therapeutic pharmaceuticals simultaneously and combined drug delivery over a single MOF carrier has not been extensively developed. As such, in this study we implemented Mg-MOF-74, which is known to have rapid pharmacokinetic properties, for the combined delivery of ibuprofen and curcumin to demonstrate the proof-of-concept for dual-drug delivery over this previously unexplored MOF. To this end, 30 wt % total drug loading of two drugs was impregnated at various ratios (25:5 ibuprofen-curcumin, 20:5 ibuprofen-curcumin, 15:15 ibuprofen-curcumin, 10:20 ibuprofen-curcumin, and 5:25 ibuprofen-curcumin), and the drug delivery performance of the materials was assessed from 0 to 24 h in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The experiments revealed that all five ratios of ibuprofen-curcumin loadings can effectively deliver both compounds; however, elevating the curcumin loading beyond 10 wt % decreases the drug loading efficiency for ibuprofen and can also inhibit ibuprofen release. Nevertheless, because Mg-MOF-74 was able to successfully deliver both compounds, this study serves as a promising proof-of-concept for dual-drug delivery from a single MOF carrier. In this regard, the work demonstrated herein expands the use of MOFs for drug delivery applications and can be used to supplement drug administration via orally ingested tablets.
