Self-supported Cu3P nanowire electrode as an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction

Tensile nanostructured hierarchically porous non-precious transition metal-based electrocatalyst for durable anion exchange membrane-based water electrolysis

Electrochemical water electrolysis is a promising method for sustainable hydrogen production while transiting towards hydrogen economy. Among many, the Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) based water electrolyzer is an emerging yet potentially affordable technology on maturity for producing large-scale hydrogen accommodating the usage of Non-Platinum Group Metal (non-PGM) based inexpensive electrocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the excellent performance of a bifunctional Nickel Copper Phosphide-Nickel sulphide (NCP-NS) electrocatalyst with a unique tensile nanostructure obtained via a facile, controlled ambient galvanic displacement route. An AEM electrolyzer with a larger active area of 10 cm2 stacked with the symmetric NCP-NS electrodes and a membrane demonstrates scalability with a requirement of a mere 1.66 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The nickel-copper phosphide boosts the kinetics of charge transfer between the electrode and electrolyte interface, while a unique combination of a few nickel sulphide phases present in the catalyst provides sufficiently appropriate active sites for the overall water electrolysis. For the first time, we report a room temperature performance of ∼ 230 mA cm-2 at 2 V for a non-PGM-based bifunctional electrocatalyst with exceptional durability for over 300 h of operation in an AEM water electrolyser with a retention rate of 95 %-97 % at a current density range of 80-800 mA cm-2.

Copper Selenophosphate, Cu3PSe4, Nanoparticle Synthesis: Octadecane Is the Key to a Simplified, Atom-Economical Reaction

Nanoparticle syntheses are designed to produce the desired product in high yield but traditionally neglect atom-economy. Here we report that the simple, but significant, change of the solvent from 1-octadecene (1-ODE) to the operationally inert octadecane (ODA) permits an atom-economical synthesis of copper selenophosphate (Cu3PSe4) nanoparticles. This change eliminates the competing selenium (Se) delivery pathways from our first report that required an excess of Se. Instead Se0powder is dispersed in ODA, which promotes a formal eight-electron transfer between Cu3-xP and Se0. Powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirm the purity of the Cu3PSe4, while 1H and 13C NMR indicate the absence of oxidized ODA or Se species. We utilize the direct pathway to gain insights into stoichiometry and ligand identity using thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Given the prevalence of 1-ODE in nanoparticle synthesis, this approach could be applied to other chalcogenide reaction pathways to improve stoichiometry and atom-economy.

Synthesis of Self-Supported Cu/Cu3P Nanoarrays as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Owing to the energy crisis and environmental pollution, it is essential to develop cheap, environmentally friendly and sustainable energy to replace noble metal electrocatalysts for use in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We report herein that a Cu/Cu3P nanoarray catalyst was directly grown on the surfaces of Cu nanosheets from its Cu/CuO nanoarray precursor by a low-temperature phosphidation process. In particular, the effects of phosphating distance, mass ratio and temperature on the morphology of Cu/Cu3P nanoarrays were studied in detail. This nanoarray, as an electrocatalyst, displays excellent catalytic performance and long-term stability in an acid solution for electrochemical hydrogen generation. Specifically, the Cu/Cu3P nanoarray-270 exhibits a low onset overpotential (96 mV) and a small Tafel slope (131 mV dec−1).
