Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based nanofiber architectures for the removal of heavy metal ions

An Innovative Approach for Elemental Mercury Adsorption Using X-ray Irradiation and Electrospun Nylon/Chitosan Nanofibers

A novel approach was proposed, utilizing an electrical field and X-ray irradiation to oxidize elemental mercury (Hg0) and encapsulate it within a nanofibrous mat made of Polyamide 6/Chitosan. The X-rays contributed significantly to the conversion of Hg0 into Hg+ by producing electrons through the photoionization of gas molecules. The positive and negative pole electrodes generated an electric field that exerted a magnetic force, resulting in the redirection of oxidized elemental mercury towards the negative pole electrode, which was coupled with a Polyamide 6/Chitosan nanofiber mat. The evaluation of the Polyamide 6/Chitosan nanofibers exposed to oxidized mercury showed that the mercury, found in the steam of a specially designed filtration device, was captured in two different forms. Firstly, it was chemically bonded with concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 10 ng of Hg in total. Secondly, it was retained on the surface of the Polyamide 6/Chitosan nanofibers with a concentration of 10 microg/m3 of Hg per minute. Nevertheless, a concentration of 10 microg/m3 of mercury is considered significant, given that the emission levels of mercury from each coal power plant typically vary from approximately 4.72 to 44.07 microg/m3. Thus, this research presents a viable approach to reducing mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants, which could result in lower operational expenses and less secondary environmental effects.

Hierarchical-Bioinspired MOFs Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Proteins exhibit complex and diverse multi-dimensional structures, along with a wide range of functional groups capable of binding metal ions. By harnessing the unique characteristics of proteins, it is possible to enhance the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and modify their morphology. Here, the utilization of biomineralized bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein as a template for synthesizing Mil-100 with superior microwave absorption (MA) properties is investigated. The multi-dimensional structure and abundant functional groups of biomineralized BSA protein make it an ideal candidate for guiding the synthesis of Mil-100 with intricate network structures. The BSA@Mil-100 synthesized using this method exhibits exceptional uniformity and monodispersity of nanocrystals. The findings suggest that the BSA protein template significantly influences the regulation of nanocrystal and microstructure formation of Mil-100, resulting in a highly uniform and monodisperse structure. Notably, the synthesized 2-BSA@Mil-100 demonstrates a high reflection loss value of -58 dB at 8.85 GHz, along with a maximum effective absorption bandwidth value of 6.79 GHz, spanning from 6.01 to 12.8 GHz. Overall, this study highlights the potential of utilizing BSA protein as a template for MOF synthesis, offering an effective strategy for the design and development of high-performance MA materials.

Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment: efficient and low-cost removal approaches to eliminate their toxicity: a review

Heavy metal contamination of water sources has emerged as a major global environmental concern, threatening both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment is on the rise due to industrialization, climate change, and urbanization. Sources of pollution include mining waste, landfill leachates, municipal and industrial wastewater, urban runoff, and natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, weathering, and rock abrasion. Heavy metal ions are toxic, potentially carcinogenic, and can bioaccumulate in biological systems. Heavy metals can cause harm to various organs, including the neurological system, liver, lungs, kidneys, stomach, skin, and reproductive systems, even at low exposure levels. Efforts to find efficient methods to remove heavy metals from wastewater have increased in recent years. Although some approaches can effectively remove heavy metal contaminants, their high preparation and usage costs may limit their practical applications. Many review articles have been published on the toxicity and treatment methods for removing heavy metals from wastewater. This review focuses on the main sources of heavy metal pollution, their biological and chemical transformation, toxicological impacts on the environment, and harmful effects on the ecosystem. It also examines recent advances in cost-effective and efficient techniques for removing heavy metals from wastewater, such as physicochemical adsorption using biochar and natural zeolite ion exchangers, as well as decomposition of heavy metal complexes through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Finally, the advantages, practical applications, and future potential of these techniques are discussed, along with any challenges and limitations that must be considered.

Design and Application of Materials for Sequestration and Immobilization of 99Tc

⁹⁹Technetium (⁹⁹Tc) is a hazardous radionuclide that poses a serious environmental threat. The wide variation and complex chemistries of liquid nuclear waste streams containing ⁹⁹Tc often create unique, site specific challenges when sequestering and immobilizing the waste in a matrix suitable for long-term storage and disposal. Therefore, an effective management plan for ⁹⁹Tc containing liquid radioactive wastes (such as storage (tanks) and decommissioned wastes) will likely require a variety of suitable materials/matrixes capable of adapting to and addressing these challenges. In this review, we discuss and highlight the key developments for effective removal and immobilization of ⁹⁹Tc liquid waste in inorganic waste forms. Specifically, we review the synthesis, characterization, and application of materials for the targeted removal of ⁹⁹Tc from (simulated) waste solutions under various experimental conditions. These materials include (i) layered double hydroxides (LDHs), (ii) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), (iii) ion-exchange resins (IERs) as well as cationic organic polymers (COPs), (iv) surface modified natural clay materials (SMCMs), and (v) graphene-based materials (GBMs). Second, we discuss some of the major and recent developments toward ⁹⁹Tc immobilization in (i) glass, (ii) cement, and (iii) iron mineral waste forms. Finally, we present future challenges that need to be addressed for the design, synthesis, and selection of suitable matrixes for the efficient sequestration and immobilization of ⁹⁹Tc from targeted wastes. The purpose of this review is to inspire research on the design and application of various suitable materials/matrixes for selective removal of ⁹⁹Tc present globally in different radioactive wastes and its immobilization in stable/durable waste forms.

A review of recent developments of metal-organic frameworks as combined biomedical platforms over the past decade

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), also called porous coordination polymers, represent a class of crystalline porous materials made up of organic ligands and metal ions/metal clusters. Herein, an overview of the preparation of different metal-organic frameworks and the recent advances in MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems (DDSs) with the drug release mechanisms including pH-, temperature-, ion-, magnetic-, pressure-, adenosine-triphosphate (ATP)-, H₂S-, redox-, responsive, and photoresponsive MOF were rarely introduced. The combination therapy containing of two or more treatments can be enhanced treatment effectiveness through overcoming limitations of monotherapy. Photothermal therapy (PTT) combined with chemotherapy (CT), chemotherapy in combination with PTT or other combinations were explained to overcome drug resistance and side effects in normal cells as well as enhancing the therapeutic response. Integrated platforms containing of photothermal/drug-delivering functions with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) properties exhibited great advantages in cancer therapy.

Metal organic framework-loaded polyethersulfone/polyacrylonitrile photocatalytic nanofibrous membranes under visible light irradiation for the removal of Cr(vi) and phenol from water

In this work, various amounts of the UiO-66-NH₂ and UiO-66-NH₂/TiO₂ MOFs have been loaded into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers supported on polyethersulfone (PES). The visible light irradiation was used to investigate the influence of pH (2-10), initial concentration (10-500 mg L^-1), and time (5-240 min) on the removal efficiency of phenol and Cr(vi) in the presence of MOFs. The reaction time: 120 min, catalyst dosage: 0.5 g L^-1, pH: 2 for Cr(vi) ions and pH: 3 for phenol molecules were optimum to degrade phenol and to reduce Cr(vi) ions. The characterization of the produced samples was performed using X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The capability of synthesized photocatalytic membranes was investigated for the removal of phenol and Cr(vi) ions from water. The water flux, Cr(vi) and phenol solutions fluxes and their rejection percentages were evaluated under pressure of 2 bar in the presence of visible light irradiation and in the dark. The best performance of the synthesized nanofibers was obtained for UiO-66-NH₂/TiO₂ MOF 5 wt% loaded-PES/PAN nanofibrous membranes at temperature of 25 °C and pH of 3. Results demonstrated the high capability of MOFs-loaded nanofibrous membranes for the removal of various contaminants such as Cr(vi) ions and phenol molecules from water.

Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) and Cellulose Nanofibers (CNFs) as Adsorbents of Heavy Metal Ions

The isolation of nanocellulose has been extensively investigated due to the growing demand for sustainable green materials. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), which have the same chemical composition but have different morphology, particle size, crystallinity, and other properties depending on the precursor and the synthesis method used. In comparison, CNC particles have a short rod-like shape and have smaller particle dimensions when compared to CNF particles in the form of fibers. CNC synthesis was carried out chemically (hydrolysis method), and CNF synthesis was carried out mechanically (homogenization, ball milling, and grinding), and both can be modified because they have a large surface area and are rich in hydroxyl groups. Modifications were made to increase the adsorption ability of heavy metal ions. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric (TG), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) can reveal the characteristics and morphology of CNCs and CNFs. The success and effectiveness of the heavy metal adsorption process are influenced by a few factors. These factors include adsorbent chemical structure changes, adsorbent surface area, the availability of active sites on the adsorbent’s surface, adsorption constants, heavy metal ionic size differences, pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and contact time during the adsorption process. In this review, we will discuss the characteristics of CNCs and CNFs synthesized from various precursors and methods, the modification methods, and the application of CNCs and CNFs as heavy metal ion adsorbents, which includes suitable isotherm and kinetics models and the effect of pH on the selectivity of various types of heavy metal ions.

Facile Synthesis of ZIF-67 for the Adsorption of Methyl Green from Wastewater: Integrating Molecular Models and Experimental Evidence to Comprehend the Removal Mechanism

Organic dyes with enduring colors which are malodorous are a significant source of environmental deterioration due to their virulent effects on aquatic life and lethal carcinogenic effects on living organisms. In this study, the adsorption of methyl green (MG), a cationic dye, was achieved by using ZIF-67, which has been deemed an effective adsorbent for the removal of contaminants from wastewater. The characterization of ZIF-67 was done by FTIR, XRD, and SEM analysis. The adsorption mechanism and characteristics were investigated with the help of control batch experiments and theoretical studies. The systematical kinetic studies and isotherms were sanctioned with a pseudo-second-order model and a Langmuir model (R² = 0.9951), confirming the chemisorption and monolayer interaction process, respectively. The maximum removal capacities of ZIF-67 for MG was 96% at pH = 11 and T = 25 °C. DFT calculations were done to predict the active sites in MG by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). Furthermore, both Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations were also used to study the adsorption mechanism.

Reconstruction of Electronic Structure of MOF-525 via Metalloporphyrin for Enhanced Photoelectro-Fenton Process

Photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) process can continuously promote the occurrence of Fenton reaction and the generation of active species, which is an advanced oxidation technology for pollutant degradation. However, the lack of bifunctional catalysts restricts the development of PEF technology. In this study, the electronic rearrangement MOF-525 modified by metalloporphyrin (named MOF-525-Fe/Zr) was prepared, to load on the carbon felt as a novel cathode catalyst, which is used in PEF process. A series of characterization and photoelectric chemical properties tests combined with DFT calculation showed that the modification of MOF-525 could not only have the large specific surface area and multistage pore structure but also co-stimulate the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and ligand-to-cluster charge transfer (LCCT) by photoelectric synergy. These charge transitions provide periodic electron donor-acceptor conduction paths in MOF-525-Fe/Zr, which can improve the active species formation and transfer efficiency. Owing to their favorable pore and electronic structure as well as stability, MOF-525-Fe/Zr shows great promise for the application in the catalytic process of PEF. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was enhanced by MOF-525-Fe/Zr with the TOC removal rate above 75% both in river water and tap water. Finally, the reasonable pathway of PEF catalytic degradation of SMX was proposed by HPLC-MS analysis. In conclusion, this study provides a new idea for reconstructing the electronic structure of MOFs catalyst and broadening the practical application of PEF technology.

Taguchi L25 (54) Approach for Methylene Blue Removal by Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofiber-Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composite

A membrane composed of polyethylene terephthalate nanofiber and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PET NF-MWCNTs) composite is used to adsorb methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to study the surface properties of the adsorbent. Several parameters affecting dye adsorption (pH, MB dye initial concentration, PET NF-MWCNTs dose, and contact time) are optimized for optimal removal efficiency (R, %) by using the Taguchi L25 (54) Orthogonal Array approach. According to the ANOVA results, pH has the highest contributing percentage at 71.01%, suggesting it has the most significant impact on removal efficiency. The adsorbent dose is the second most affected (12.08%), followed by the MB dye initial concentration of 5.91%, and the least affected is the contact time (1.81%). In addition, experimental findings confirm that the Langmuir isotherm is well-fitted, suggesting a monolayer capping of MB dye on the PET-NF-MWCNT surface with a maximum adsorption capacity of 7.047 mg g−1. Also, the kinetic results are well-suited to the pseudo-second-order model. There is a good agreement between the calculated (qe) and experimental values for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
