Correlating axial and equatorial ligand field effects to the single-molecule magnet performances of a family of dysprosium bis-methanediide complexes

A highly anisotropic family of hexagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) unsaturated 18-crown-6 complexes exceeding the blockade barrier over 2700 K: a computational exploration

In the present work, we have explored a series of unsaturated hexa-18-crown-6 (U18C6) ligands towards designing highly anisotropic Dy(III) based single-ion magnets (SIMs) with the general formula [Dy(U18C6)X2]+ (where U18C6 = [C12H12O6] (1), [C12H12S6] (2), [C12H12Se6] (3), [C12H12O4S2] (4), [C12H12O4Se2] (5) and X = F, Cl, Br, I, OtBu and OSiPh3). By analysing the electronic structure, bonding and magnetic properties, we find that the U18C6 ligands prefer stabilising the highly symmetric eight-coordinated hexagonal bipyramidal geometry (HBPY-8), which is the source of the near-Ising type anisotropy in all the [Dy(U18C6)X2]+ complexes. Moreover, the ability of sulfur/selenium substituted U18C6 ligands to stabilize the highly anisotropic HBPY-8 geometry makes them more promising towards engineering the equatorial ligand field compared to substituted saturated 18C6 ligands where the exodentate arrangement of the S lone pairs results in low symmetry. Magnetic relaxation analysis predicts a record barrier height over 2700 K for [Dy(C12H12O6)F2]+ and [Dy(C12H12S6)X2]+ (where X = F, OtBu and OSiPh3) complexes, nearly 23% higher than those of the top performing Dy(III) based SIMs in the literature.

Constructing high axiality mononuclear dysprosium molecular magnets via a regulation-of-co-ligands strategy

Two lanthanide complexes with formulae [DyIII(LN5)(pentafluoro-PhO)3] (1) and [DyIII(LN5)(2,6-difluoro-PhO)2](BPh4) (2) (LN5 = 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadecal (19),2,13,15,17-pentaene) were structurally and magnetically characterized. DyIII ions lie in the cavity of a five coordinate nitrogen macrocycle, and in combination with the introduction of multi-fluorinated monodentate phenoxyl coligands a high axiality coordination symmetry is built. Using the pentafluorophenol co-ligand, complex 1 with a D2d coordination environment, is obtained and displays moderate single-molecule magnets (SMMs) behavior. When difluorophenol co-ligands were used, a higher local axisymmetric pentagonal bipyramidal coordination geometry was observed in complex 2, which displays apparent slow magnetic relaxation behavior with a hysteresis temperature of up to 5 K. Further magnetic studies of diluted samples combined with ab initio calculations indicate that the high axiality plays a crucial role in suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) and consequently results in good slow magnetic relaxation behavior. Different fluoro-substituted phenoxyl co-ligands have phenoloxy oxygen atoms with different electrostatic potentials as well as a different number of phenoloxy coligands along the magnetic axis, resulting in different ligand field strengths and coordination symmetries.

Triple Inverse Sandwich versus End-On Diazenido: Bonding Motifs across a Series of Rhenium-Lanthanide and -Actinide Complexes

While synthesizing a series of rhenium-lanthanide triple inverse sandwich complexes, we unexpectedly uncovered evidence for rare examples of end-on lanthanide dinitrogen coordination for certain heavy lanthanide elements as well as for uranium. We begin our report with the synthesis and characterization of a series of trirhenium triple inverse sandwich complexes with the early lanthanides, Ln[(μ-η5:η5-Cp)Re(BDI)]3(THF) (1-Ln, Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm; Cp = cyclopentadienide, BDI = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-β-diketiminate). However, as we moved across the lanthanide series, we ran into an unexpected result for gadolinium in which we structurally characterized two products for gadolinium, namely, 1-Gd (analogous to 1-Ln) and a diazenido dirhenium double inverse sandwich complex Gd[(μ-η1:η1-N2)Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)][(μ-η5:η5-Cp)Re(BDI)]2(THF)2 (2-Gd). Evidence for analogues of 2-Gd was spectroscopically observed for other heavy lanthanides (2-Ln, Ln = Tb, Dy, Er), and, in the case of 2-Er, structurally authenticated. These complexes represent the first observed examples of heterobimetallic end-on lanthanide dinitrogen coordination. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to probe relevant bonding interactions and reveal energetic differences between both the experimental and putative 1-Ln and 2-Ln complexes. We also present additional examples of novel end-on heterobimetallic lanthanide and actinide diazenido moieties in the erbium-rhenium complex (η8-COT)Er[(μ-η1:η1-N2)Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)](THF)(Et2O) (3-Er) and uranium-rhenium complex [Na(2.2.2-cryptand)][(η5-C5H4SiMe3)3U(μ-η1:η1-N2)Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)] (4-U). Finally, we expand the scope of rhenium inverse sandwich coordination by synthesizing divalent double inverse sandwich complex Yb[(μ-η5:η5-Cp)Re(BDI)]2(THF)2 (5-Yb), as well as base-free, homoleptic rhenium-rare earth triple inverse sandwich complex Y[(μ-η5:η5-Cp)Re(BDI)]3 (6-Y).

Dipolar Coupling as a Mechanism for Fine Control of Magnetic States in ErCOT-Alkyl Molecular Magnets

The design of molecular magnets has progressed greatly by taking advantage of the ability to impart successive perturbations and control vibronic transitions in 4fn systems through the careful manipulation of the crystal field. Herein, we control the orientation and rigidity of two dinuclear ErCOT-based molecular magnets: the inversion-symmetric bridged [ErCOT(μ-Me)(THF)]2 (2) and the nearly linear Li[(ErCOT)2(μ-Me)3] (3). The conserved anisotropy of the ErCOT synthetic unit facilitates the direction of the arrangement of its magnetic anisotropy for the purposes of generating controlled internal magnetic fields, improving control of the energetics and transition probabilities of the electronic angular momentum states with exchange biasing via dipolar coupling. This control is evidenced through the introduction of a second thermal barrier to relaxation operant at low temperatures that is twice as large in 3 as in 2. This barrier acts to suppress through-barrier relaxation by protecting the ground state from interacting with stray local fields while operating at an energy scale an order of magnitude smaller than the crystal field term. These properties are highlighted when contrasted against the mononuclear structure ErCOT(Bn)(THF)2 (1), in which quantum tunneling of the magnetization processes dominate, as demonstrated by magnetometry and ab initio computational methods. Furthermore, far-infrared magnetospectroscopy measurements reveal that the increased rigidity imparted by successive removal of solvent ligands when adding bridging methyl groups, along with the increased excited state purity, severely limits local spin-vibrational interactions that facilitate magnetic relaxation, manifesting as longer relaxation times in 3 relative to those in 2 as temperature is increased.

Modulation of the magnetic dynamics in two air-stable sulfur-ligated dysprosium complexes via polymerization

Two air-stable sulfur-ligated dysprosium(III) complexes [HN(Et)₃][Dy₂NaL₈] (1) and [DyNaL₄(MeOH)_x(H₂O)_2-x]_n (2) based on 2-pyridinethiol 1-oxide (HL) were synthesized and structurally characterized. Discrete 1 and polymeric 2 share the same anionic unit of [DyL₄]^- with the O₄S₄ coordination environment, but differ in the precise geometry with triangular dodecahedron geometry in 1 and biaugmented trigonal prism geometry in 2. The subtle change leads to observable temperature-independent relaxation for 2 while a faster relaxation with invisible peak for 1 at zero dc field. Under an optimal dc field, both display the typical Raman process with a smaller pre-factor and higher exponent for 2. Ab initio calculations reveal that the predicted energy barriers are 287 cm^-1 for 1 and 303 cm^-1 for 2. These results demonstrate the construction and magnetic modulation of air-stable sulfur-ligated Dy-SMM architectures.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a homoaxially phosphine oxide coordinated pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complex

We report the synthesis of [(L)Dy^III(Cy₃PO)₂]·[BPh₄] (1-Dy) (where H₂L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-benzoylhydrazone and Cy = cyclohexyl) which crystallized in the triclinic, P1̄ space group. The local geometry around Dy(III) in 1-Dy was found to be pentagonal bipyramidal (pseudo-D_5h). The AC magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on 1-Dy and on its diluted 1-Y(Dy) samples showed a typical single-molecule magnet signature revealed by the appearance of AC-frequency dependent out-of-phase susceptibility signals in the absence of a static magnetic field. The out-of-phase AC susceptibility signals were well resolved on the application of a small magnetic field (H_DC = 500 Oe) and yielded an energy barrier for magnetization flipping of U_eff/k_B = 50 K for the diluted derivative. The magnetic studies on 1-Dy and 1-Y(Dy) and data analysis further confirm that Raman and QTM under-barrier magnetic relaxations play a crucial role in lowering U_eff despite the almost axial nature of the Dy(III) ion in 1-Dy. We have rationalized these observations through detailed ab initio calculations performed on the X-ray crystal structure of 1-Dy.

Combined experimental and theoretical studies on a series of mononuclear LnIII single-molecule magnets: dramatic influence of remote substitution on the magnetic dynamics in Dy analogues

A series of Ln^III complexes of general formula [Ln(H₂L¹)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)](NO₃) (1-5) [Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) Ho (3), Er (4), and Yb (5)] and an analogous Dy^III complex with ligand H₂L², [Dy(H₂L²)₂(NO₃)₃(H₂O)](NO₃) (6), where H₂L¹ and H₂L² stand for (E)-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol and (E)-2-[(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol, respectively, have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. All these complexes are isostructural and isomorphous, in which the zwitterionic form of the ligands predominantly coordinate the metal centers. The magnetic study revealed that complex 3 displays negligible SMM behaviour, while 1 and 6 are zero field SMMs, the performance of which can largely be improved in the presence of an applied dc field by lowering under barrier relaxation processes, and finally 2, 4, and 5 are field-induced SMMs. The most remarkable observation in the present study is the dramatically-enhanced SMM performance in 6 compared to 1, achieved by only a remote methyl substitution at the ligand framework to increase the intermolecular separation. Although SINGLE_ANISO ab initio calculations for 1 and 6 are very similar, the POLY_ANISO module revealed weak dipolar interactions in both the compounds but significant antiferromagnetic interaction in 1, thereby justifying the experimental fact. The present work discloses that even a small substitution such as a methyl group can adequately increase the intermolecular separation, leading to several-fold enhanced effective energy barrier.

Axial Ligand as a Critical Factor for High-Performance Pentagonal Bipyramidal Dy(III) Single-Ion Magnets

The choice of axial ligands is of great importance for the construction of high-performance Dy-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, combining axial ligands Ph₃SiO^- (anion of triphenylsilanol) and 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^- (the anion of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrophenol) with a neutral macrocyclic ligand 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadeca-1(19),2,13,15,17-pentaene (L₂^N5) generates two new pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes [Dy^III(L₂^N5) (X)₂](BPh₄) (X = Ph₃SiO^-, 1; 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^-, 2) with strong axial ligand fields. Magnetic characterizations show that 1 possesses a large energy barrier above 1000 K and a magnetic hysteresis up to 9 K, whereas 2 only displays field-induced peaks of alternating-current susceptibilities without the hysteresis loop, even though 2 has a similar coordination geometry with 1. Detailed Ab initio calculations indicate an apparent difference in the axial negative charge between both complexes, which is caused by the diverse electron-donating properties of the axial ligands. The present work provides an efficient strategy to enhance the SMMs' properties, which highlights that the electron-donating property of the axial ligands is especially important for constructing the high-performance Dy-based SMMs.

Alkali Metal Based Triimidosulfite Cages as Versatile Precursors for Single‐Molecule Magnets

Based on the potassium [{S(tBuN)₂(tBuNH)}₂K₃(tmeda)‐K₃{(HNtBu)(NtBu)₂S}₂] (1) and sodium precursors [S(tBuN)₃(thf)₃‐Na₃SNa₃(thf)₃(NtBu)₃S] (2), [S(tBuN)₃(thf)₃Na₃{(HNtBu)(NtBu)₂S}] (3) and [(tmeda)₃S‐{Na₃(NtBu)₃S}₂] (4) the syntheses and magnetic properties of three mixed metal triimidosulfite based alkali‐lanthanide‐metal‐cages [(tBuNH)Dy{K(0.5tmeda)}₂{(NtBu)₃S}₂]_n (5) and [ClLn{Na(thf)}₂{(NtBu)₃S}₂] with Ln=Dy (6), Er (7) are reported. The corresponding potassium (1) and sodium (2–4) based cages are characterized through XRD and NMR experiments. Preventing lithium chloride co‐complexation led to a significant increase of SMM performance to previously reported sulfur‐nitrogen ligands. The subsequent Dy^III‐complexes 5 and 6 display slow relaxation of magnetization at zero field, with relaxation barriers U=77.0 cm⁻¹ for 5, 512.9 and 316.3 cm⁻¹ for 6, respectively. Significantly, the latter complex 6 also exhibits a butterfly‐shaped hysteresis up to 7 K.

Effect of an axial coordination environment on quantum tunnelling of magnetization for dysprosium single-ion magnets with theoretical insight

Herein, we report two mononuclear dysprosium complexes [Dy(H₄L){B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂}₂](Cl)·MeOH (1) and [Dy(H₄L){MeOH)₂(NCS)₂}](Cl) (2) [where H₄L = 2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(N-phenylhydrazinecarboxamide)] with different axial coordination environments. The structural analysis revealed that the pentadentate H₄L ligand binds through the equatorial position in both complexes. In complex 1, the axial positions are occupied by bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate [B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂]^-. On the other hand, in complex 2, one axial position is occupied by two NCS^- and one MeOH molecule while another MeOH molecule is coordinated to the other axial position. Magnetic measurements disclose the presence of field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization with an energy barrier of U_eff = 30 K for 1 whereas no such effective barrier was observed in complex 2. Detailed analysis of field and temperature dependence of the relaxation time confirms the major role of Raman, QTM, and direct processes rather than the Orbach process in complex 1. It was observed that [B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂]^- provides higher axial anisotropy which slows down the QTM process (relaxation time for the QTM process is 2.70 × 10^-5 s) in 1 as compared to NCS anions and MeOH molecules in 2 (1.03 × 10^-8 s), and is responsible for the absence of an effective energy barrier in the latter complex as confirmed by ab initio calculations. The calculations also show that the presence of a large bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate ligand in axial positions may result in high-performance Dy-based single-ion magnets.

Late Lanthanide Macrocyclic Tetra-NHC Complexes

An isostructural set of macrocyclic tetra-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes were synthesized on late lanthanides including Lu, Yb, Ho, Dy, and Gd. They were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, electrochemistry, and SQUID magnetometry. Solid-state structures show that all complexes are in a highly distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an axial HMDS ligand. ¹H NMR for Lu, Yb, and Dy demonstrates that these geometries are maintained in solution. Electrochemical measurements on the Yb complex show that the NHCs are very strong σ-donors compared to other organometallic Yb complexes. Magnetic measurements of the Yb and Dy complexes reveal slow relaxation of the magnetization in both complexes. The highly anisotropic Dy complex possesses an energy barrier to spin reversal of 52.42 K/36.43 cm^-1 and waist-restricted hysteresis up to 2.8 K. Finally, an 18-atom macrocycle variant of the Lu complex was synthesized for comparison in reactivity and stability. These complexes are the first lanthanides prepared with macrocyclic NHCs and suggest that NHCs may be a promising ligand for developing single-molecule magnets.

Macrocycle supported dinuclear lanthanide complexes with different β-diketonate co-ligands displaying zero field single-molecule magnetic behaviour

Three different sets of isomorphous dinuclear Gd/Dy complexes with an uncommon macrocyclic ligand and β-diketonate co-ligands were reported in which Dy2 analogues are zero field SMMs.

The first exploration of coordination chemistry using a methyl substituted o-vanillin based ligand: an example starting with Dy4/Zn2Dy2 systems displaying slow relaxation of magnetization

Two butterfly-shaped Dy4 and Zn2Dy2 complexes displaying slow relaxation of magnetization have been synthesized from a new methyl substituted o-vanillin based ligand, enlarging the scope for finding better SMMs.

Imidosulfonate scorpionate ligands in lanthanide single-molecule magnet design: slow magnetic relaxation and butterfly hysteresis in [ClDy{Ph2PCH2S(NtBu)3}2]

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) harbour vast opportunities for potential pioneering applications upon optimization like big data storage and quantum computing. Lanthanides were found to be highly suitable candidates in the design of such molecules, as they intrinsically hold a large unquenched orbital momentum and a strong spin-orbit coupling, warranting a high magnetic anisotropy. An indispensable element in successfully tailoring SMMs is the ligand design. Polyimido sulfur ligands offer a promising choice because the polar S⁺-N^--bond facilitates both electronic and geometric adaptability to various f-metals. In particular, the acute N-Ln-N bite angle generates advantageous magnetic properties. The [Ph₂PCH₂S(NtBu)₃]^- anion, introduced from [(thf)₃K{Ph₂PCH₂S(NtBu)₃}] (2) to a series of complexes [ClLn{Ph₂PCH₂S(NtBu)₃}₂] with Ln = Tb (3a), Dy (3b), Er (3c), Ho (3d), and Lu (3e), provides tripodal shielding of the metal's hemisphere as well as a side-arm donation of a soft phosphorus atom. For the Tb and Er complexes 3a and 3d, slow magnetic relaxation (U_eff = 235 and 34.5 cm^-1, respectively) was only observed under an applied dc field. The dysprosium congener 3b, however, is a true SMM with relaxation at zero field (U_eff = 66 cm^-1) and showing a butterfly hysteresis close to 3.5 K. Upon magnetic dilution with the diamagnetic and isostructural lutetium complex 3e or application of a magnetic field, the energy barrier to spin reversal is increased to 74 cm^-1.
