Towards the object-oriented design of active hydrogen evolution catalysts on single-atom alloys

Effect of Bystander Hydrogen Atoms on Hydrogen Desorption on Single-Atom Alloy Surfaces: Insights from Simulated Temperature-Programmed Desorption Spectra

Single-atom alloy (SAA) catalysts exhibit unique and excellent catalytic properties in heterogeneous hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions. A thorough understanding of the microscopic surface processes is essential to improve the catalytic performance. Here, from a new perspective of the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectra of hydrogen (H) on two common SAA surfaces, Pt@Cu(111) and Pd@Cu(111), we reveal and confirm the key influence of H atoms attached to Pt/Pd dopants, i.e., the H atom bystander, on the desorption process of surface H atoms. It is found that only after considering the effect of the H atom bystander can the simulated TPD spectra well reproduce the experimentally observed higher desorption temperature on Pt@Cu(111) than on Pd@Cu(111) and the leftward shift of the TPD peak with increasing H atom coverage; otherwise, the features are inconsistent with experiments. Our work provides direct evidence for the effect of bystander H atoms from a simulation perspective.

Electrifying Energy and Chemical Transformations with Single-Atom Alloy Nanoparticle Catalysts

Single-atom alloys (SAAs) have attracted considerable attention as promising electrocatalysts in reactions central to energy conversion and chemical transformation. In contrast to monometallic nanocrystals and metal alloys, SAAs possess unique and intriguing physicochemical properties, positioning them as ideal model systems for studying structure-property relationships. However, the field is still in its early stages. In this Perspective, we first review and summarize rational synthesis methods and advanced characterization techniques for SAA nanoparticle catalysts. We then emphasize the extensive applications of SAAs in a range of electrocatalytic reactions, including fuel cell reactions, water splitting, and carbon dioxide and nitrate reductions. Finally, we provide insights into existing challenges and prospects associated with the controlled synthesis, characterization, and design of SAA catalysts.

Topology-Determined Structural Genes Enable Data-Driven Discovery and Intelligent Design of Potential Metal Oxides for Inert C-H Bond Activation

The identification of appropriate structural genes that influence the active-site configuration for a given reaction is critical for discovering potential catalysts with reduced reaction barriers. In this study, we introduce bulk-phase topology-derived tetrahedral descriptors as a means of expressing a catalyst's "material structural genes". We combine this approach with an interpretable machine learning model to accurately and efficiently predict the effective barrier associated with methane C-H bond cleavage across a wide range of metal oxides (MOs). These structural genes enable high-throughput catalyst screening for low-temperature methane activation and ultimately identify 13 candidate catalysts from a pool of 9095 MOs that are recommended for experimental synthesis. The topology-based method that we describe can also be extended to facilitate high-throughput catalyst screening and design for other dehydrogenation reactions.

Promotion Effect of Well-Defined Deposited Water Layer on Carbon Monoxide Oxidation Catalyzed by Single-Atom Alloys

Single-atom alloys (SAAs) exhibit excellent catalytic performance and unique electronic structures, emerging as promising catalysts for potential industrial reactions. While most of them have been widely employed under reducing conditions, few are applied in oxidation reactions. Herein, using density functional theory calculations and microkinetic simulations, we demonstrate that a well-defined one water layer can improve CO oxidation on model SAAs, with reaction rates increased by orders of magnitude. It is found that the formation of hydrogen bonds and the transfer of charges effectively enhance the adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules at the H₂O/SAA interfaces, which not only increases the surface coverage of O₂ species but also reduces the energy barrier of CO oxidation. The proposed strategy in this work would extend the application range of SAA catalysts to oxidation reactions.

A single-atom Cu-N2 catalyst eliminates oxygen interference for electrochemical sensing of hydrogen peroxide in a living animal brain

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) plays essential roles in various physiological and pathological processes. The electrochemical hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction (HPRR) has been recognized as an efficient approach to H₂O₂ sensing; however, the HPRR has always suffered from low tolerance against the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), resulting in poor selectivity of the HPRR-based sensing platform. In this study, we find that the electrochemical HPRR occurs preferentially compared to the ORR when isolated Cu atoms anchored on carbon nitride (Cu₁/C₃N₄) are used as a single-atom electrocatalyst, which is theoretically attributed to the lower energy barrier of the HPRR than that of the ORR on a Cu₁/C₃N₄ single-atom catalyst (SAC). With the Cu₁/C₃N₄ SAC as the electrocatalyst, we fabricated microsensors that have a good response to H₂O₂, but not to O₂ or other electroactive neurochemicals. When implanted into a living rat brain, the microsensor shows excellent in vivo sensing performance, enabling its application in real-time quantitative investigation of the dynamics of H₂O₂ production induced by mercaptosuccinate and glutathione monoethyl ester in a living animal brain.

We have achieved the selective monitoring of H₂O₂ fluctuation in vivo free from O₂ interference by a single-atom Cu–N₂ electrocatalyst.
