The Versatile Applications of Calix[4]resorcinarene-Based Cavitands

The advancement of synthetic host-guest chemistry has played a pivotal role in exploring and quantifying weak non-covalent interactions, unraveling the intricacies of molecular recognition in both chemical and biological systems. Macrocycles, particularly calix[4]resorcinarene-based cavitands, have demonstrated significant utility in receptor design, facilitating the creation of intricately organized architectures. Within the realm of macrocycles, these cavitands stand out as privileged scaffolds owing to their synthetic adaptability, excellent topological structures, and unique recognition properties. So far, extensive investigations have been conducted on various applications of calix[4]resorcinarene-based cavitands. In this review, we will elaborate on their diverse functions, including catalysis, separation and purification, polymeric materials, sensing, battery materials, as well as drug delivery. This review aims to provide a holistic understanding of the multifaceted roles of calix[4]resorcinarene-based cavitands across various applications, shedding light on their contributions to advancing the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Supramolecular and molecular capsules, cages and containers

Stemming from early seminal notions of molecular recognition and encapsulation, three-dimensional, cavity-containing capsular compounds and assemblies have attracted intense interest due to the ability to modulate chemical and physical properties of species encapsulated within these confined spaces compared to bulk environments. With such a diverse range of covalent motifs and non-covalent (supramolecular) interactions available to assemble building blocks, an incredibly wide-range of capsular-type architectures have been developed. Furthermore, synthetic tunability of the internal environments gives chemists the opportunity to engineer systems for uses in sensing, sequestration, catalysis and transport of molecules, just to name a few. In this tutorial review, an overview is provided into the design principles, synthesis, characterisation, structural facets and properties of coordination cages, porous organic cages, supramolecular capsules, foldamers and mechanically interlocked molecules. Using seminal and recent examples, the advantages and limitations of each system are explored, highlighting their application in various tasks and functions.

Supramolecular chemistry of two new bis(1,2,3-triazolyl)pyridine macrocycles: metal complexation, self-assembly and anion binding

Two new macrocycles containing the bis(1,2,3-triazolyl)pyridine (btp) motif were prepared in high yields from a btp diazide precursor (1). Solution ¹H NMR studies show that this diazide undergoes self-assembly with divalent transition metal ions to form ML₂ complexes with pendant azide groups, apparently suitable for conversion into metal-templated catenanes; however attempts to form these catenanes were unsuccessful. Instead a new macrocycle containing two btp motifs was prepared, which forms a nanotube structure in the solid state. Reduction of the azide groups to amines followed by amide bond formation was used to convert 1 into macrocycle 8 containing btp and isophthalamide functionalities. This macrocycle binds halide and oxalate anions in acetonitrile solely through the isophthalamide motif, and binds aromatic dicarboxylates very strongly through both the isophthalamide amide donors and the btp triazole donors. The macrocycle was complexed with Pd(II) and the resulting complexes were shown to bind strongly to halide anions. The solid state structures of [Pd·8·X]BF₄ (X = Cl^-, Br^-, I^-) were investigated by X-ray crystallography, which showed that [Pd·8·Br] forms an unusual "chain of dimers" structure assembled by metal complexation, N-H⋯Br^- hydrogen bonding and short Pd⋯Pd contacts.

A guanidino-γ-cyclodextrin superdimer generates a twin receptor for phosphate dimers assembled by anti-electrostatic hydrogen bonds

Octakis-6-guadinidino-γ-cyclodextrin (gguan) hydrochloride in the presence of phosphates crystallises from aqueous solution in the unprecedented form of a superdimer (dimer-within-a-dimer). The self-assembly exposes four circular octa-guanidinium regions that bind and stabilise discrete H-bonded phosphate anion dimers. The small (∼2 nm) gguan-phosphate assembly is preorganised and stable in aqueous solution, as demonstrated by DLS and NMR experiments.
