Stimuli-responsive temporary adhesives: enabling debonding on demand through strategic molecular design

Adhesion Evolution: Designing Smart Polymeric Adhesive Systems with On-Demand Reversible Switchability

Smart polymeric switchable adhesives represent a rapidly emerging class of advanced materials, exhibiting the ability to undergo on-demand transitioning between "On" and "Off" adhesion states. By selectively tuning external stimuli triggers (including temperature, light, electricity, magnetism, and chemical agents), we can engineer these materials to undergo reversible changes in their bonding capabilities. The strategic design selection of stimuli is a pivotal factor in the design of switchable adhesive systems. This review outlines recent advancements in the field of smart switchable polymeric adhesives over the past decade with a focus on the selection of stimulus triggers. These systems are further categorized into one of four adhesion switching mechanisms upon initiation by a specific stimuli-trigger: (i) interfacial adhesion, (ii) stiffness, (iii) contact area, or (iv) suction-based switching. Evaluation of adhesion switching performance across systems is primarily made based on three key metrics: (i) maximum adhesion strength, (ii) switch ratio, and (iii) switch time. Different stimuli and mechanisms offer distinct advantages and limitations, influencing the performance characteristics and applicability of these materials across domains such as detachable biomedical devices, robotic grippers, and climbing robots. This review thus offers a perspective on the present advancements and challenges in this emerging field, along with insights into future directions.

Transforming Commercial Polymers into Tough yet Switchable Adhesives by Trident Photoswitch Molecule Doping: Break Adhesion-Switchability Paradox

Here, a trident molecule doping strategy is introduced to overcome both cohesion-adhesion trade-off and adhesion-switchability conflict, transforming commercial polymers into tough yet photo-switchable adhesives. The strategy involves initial rational design of new trident photoswitch molecules namely TAzo-3 featuring azobenzene and hydroxy-terminated alkyl chains involved rigid-soft tri-branch structure, and subsequent doping into commercial polycaprolactone (PCL) via simple blending. Unique design enables TAzo-3 as a versatile dopant, not only regulating the internal and external supramolecular interaction to balance cohesion and interface adhesion for tough bonding, but also affording marked photothermal effect to facilitate rapid adhesive melting for great photo-switchability. Thus, the optimal TAzo-3-doped PCL (TAzo-3@P) displays markedly-improved bonding performance on diverse substrates compared to linear azobenzene-doped PCL and pure PCL. Impressively, TAzo-3@P on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) attains large room-temperature adhesion strength of 6.7 MPa - surpassing most reported adhesives and many commercial adhesives on PMMA, along with easy photo-induced detachment with remarkable switch ratio of 2.09 × 105. Besides, TAzo-3@P can also act as "permanent" adhesives for only adhesion, demonstrating excellent multi-reusability, anti-freezing and waterproof ability. Mechanism studies unveil that the switchable adhesion is closely linked with the dopant molecule structure while rigid-soft coupled trident structures and hydroxy-terminated alkyl chains are key factors.

Asymmetric toughening in the lap shear of metamaterial structural adhesives

Metamaterial structural adhesives (MSAs), whose properties primarily rely on structural design, offer promising advantages over traditional adhesives, including asymmetric, switchable, and programmable adhesion. However, the effects of thick backing structures on the adhesion properties remain largely underexplored. Herein, we investigate a series of MSAs featuring a thin adhesive layer and an asymmetric thick beam structure terminated with a film. We conduct lap shear tests on the MSAs with varying terminated film thickness (t) and beam tilting angle (θ) while maintaining an identical adhesive layer. For MSAs with a thick terminated film (t = 2 mm), the effective adhesion energy is double that of solid samples without compromising shear strength, consistent with the theoretical predictions based on the crack trapping mechanism. Conversely, for MSAs with a thin terminated film (t = 0.5 mm), the maximum shear strength and effective adhesion energy are ∼2.8 times and ∼18.6 times those of solid samples, respectively, deviating significantly from the theoretical predictions due to new crack initiations. We further explore adhesion asymmetry by tuning the beam tilting angle (θ). For MSAs with highly tilted beams (θ = 70.3°), we achieve a maximum adhesion strength asymmetry factor of τ2/τ1 ∼ 2.2 for a thick terminated film (t = 2 mm), and a maximum adhesion energy asymmetry factor of Γ1/Γ2 ∼ 5.3 for a thin terminated film (t = 0.5 mm). Our work provides useful insights for designing metamaterial structural adhesives suitable for robotic grippers, wall-climbing robots, and wearable devices, particularly those requiring asymmetric, switchable, and stimuli-responsive adhesion, and adhesives on rough surfaces or in underwater conditions.

A Near-Infrared Photothermal-Responsive Underwater Adhesive with Tough Adhesion and Antibacterial Properties

Developing tunable underwater adhesives that possess tough adhesion in service and easy detachment when required remains challenging. Herein, a strategy is proposed to design a near infrared (NIR) photothermal-responsive underwater adhesive by incorporating MXene (Ti3C2Tx)-based nanoparticles within isocyanate-modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer chains. The developed adhesive exhibits long-term and tough adhesion with an underwater adhesion strength reaching 5.478 MPa. Such strong adhesion is mainly attributed to the covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds at the adhesive-substrate interface. By making use of the photothermal-response of MXene-based nanoparticles and the thermal response of PDMS-based chains, the adhesive possesses photothermal-responsive performance, exhibiting sharply diminished adhesion under NIR irradiation. Such NIR-triggered tunable adhesion allows for easy and active detachment of the adhesive when needed. Moreover, the underwater adhesive exhibits photothermal antibacterial property, making it highly desirable for underwater applications. This work enhances the understanding of photothermal-responsive underwater adhesion, enabling the design of tunable underwater adhesives for biomedical and engineering applications.

Silicone Bioadhesive with Shear-Stiffening Effect: Rate-Responsive Adhesion Behavior and Wound Dressing Application

Stimuli-responsive adhesives with on-demand adhesion capabilities are highly advantageous for facilitating wound healing. However, the triggering conditions of stimuli-responsive adhesives are cumbersome, even though some of them are detrimental to the adhesive and adjacent natural tissues. Herein, a novel stimuli-responsive adhesive called shear-stiffening adhesive (SSA) has been created by constructing a poly(diborosiloxane)-based silicone network for the first time, and SSA exhibits a rate-responsive adhesion behavior. Furthermore, we introduced bactericidal factors (PVP-I) into SSA and applied it as a wound dressing to promote the healing of infected wounds. Impressively, the wound dressing not only has excellent biocompatibility and long-term antibacterial properties but also performs well in accelerating wound healing. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for the synthesis of intelligent adhesives with force rate response, which simplifies the triggering conditions by the force rate. Thus, SSA has great potential to be applied in wound management as an intelligent bioadhesive with on-demand adhesion performance.

In situ sensing physiological properties of biological tissues using wireless miniature soft robots

Implanted electronic sensors, compared with conventional medical imaging, allow monitoring of advanced physiological properties of soft biological tissues continuously, such as adhesion, pH, viscoelasticity, and biomarkers for disease diagnosis. However, they are typically invasive, requiring being deployed by surgery, and frequently cause inflammation. Here we propose a minimally invasive method of using wireless miniature soft robots to in situ sense the physiological properties of tissues. By controlling robot-tissue interaction using external magnetic fields, visualized by medical imaging, we can recover tissue properties precisely from the robot shape and magnetic fields. We demonstrate that the robot can traverse tissues with multimodal locomotion and sense the adhesion, pH, and viscoelasticity on porcine and mice gastrointestinal tissues ex vivo, tracked by x-ray or ultrasound imaging. With the unprecedented capability of sensing tissue physiological properties with minimal invasion and high resolution deep inside our body, this technology can potentially enable critical applications in both basic research and clinical practice.

Photo-and Heat-Induced Dismantlable Adhesion Interfaces Prepared by Layer-by-Layer Deposition

The development of a dismantlable adhesion technology that allows switching between bonding and debonding states using external stimuli is important for realizing renewable and sustainable material cycles. Controlling the adhesion interface is an effective approach to manipulate the adhesion strength; however, research on dismantlable systems focusing on the interface has not been proceeded. Recently, we demonstrated a novel dismantlable system based on a stimuli-responsive molecular layer comprising cleavable anthracene dimers, which strengthen the initial adhesive force by forming chemical bonds between the substrate and adhesive and can be dismantled when required via stimulation-induced bond breaking. Here, we evaluate the use of the anthracene-based molecular layer with different components for verifying its versatility in the adhesive/dismantling system. The formation of the cleavable molecular layer by the stacking of relevant molecules enabled its usage with two types of adhesives, an epoxy adhesive and a silane-modified polymer adhesive. The initial adhesive strengths were improved in both types of molecular layers by creating chemical bonds at the adhesion interfaces. Light irradiation or heating stimuli for 1 min reduced the peel strength by up to 65%, and dismantling occurred in the cleavable photodimer layer. This study expands the versatile applicability of the molecular layer-based dismantling system.

Adhesive Interfaces toward a Zero-Waste Industry

This Feature Article evaluates ongoing efforts to adapt adhesives toward the goal of zero-waste living and suggests the most promising future directions. Adhesives are not always considered in zero-waste manufacturing because they represent only a small fraction of a product and offer no additional functionality. However, their presence restricts the reintegration of constituent parts into a circular economy, so a new generation of adhesives is required. Furthermore, their production often leads to harmful pollutants. Here, two main approaches toward addressing these problems are considered: first, the use of natural materials that replace petroleum-based polymers from which conventional adhesives are made and second, the production of dismantlable adhesives capable of debonding on demand with the application of an external stimulus. These approaches, either individually or combined, offer a new paradigm in zero-waste industrial production and consumer applications.

Smart Internal Bio-Glues

Although smart bio-glues have been well documented, the development of internal bio-glues for non-invasive or minimally invasive surgery is still met with profound challenges such as safety risk and the lack of deep tissue penetration stimuli for internal usage. Herein, a series of smart internal bio-glues are developed via the integration of o-nitrobenzene modified biopolymers with up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). Upon irradiation by near-infrared (NIR) light, the prepared smart bio-glues can undergo a gelation process, which may further induce strong adhesion between tissues under both dry and wet conditions based on multi-interactions. Moreover, those NIR light-responsive bio-glues with deeper tissue penetration ability demonstrate good biocompatibility, excellent hemostatic performance, and the potent ability to accelerate wound healing for both external and internal wounds. This work provides new opportunities for minimally invasive surgery, especially in internal wound healing using smart and robust bio-glues.

Realizing Vat-Photocycloaddition 3D Printing with Recyclable Synthetic Photorheological Silicone Fluids

Synthetic silicone rubbers are finding a broad spectrum of applications, yet there has been a demand for developing greener silicone rubbers with processability, recyclability, and reversible tunability in their mechanical properties. Here, a recyclable photorheological silicone fluid (RPSF) is developed, which realizes completely reversible wavelength-selective liquid-rubber conversion upon photoirradiation, relying on the reversible photocycloaddition of coumarin upon alternating irradiation of light with wavelengths of 365 nm (UV₃₆₅ ) and 254 nm (UV₂₅₄ ). Rheological studies demonstrate that the storage modulus of the developed RPSF increases by a factor of more than 100,000 upon UV₃₆₅ irradiation to reach 20-50 kPa, while it decreases to ca. 0.01 kPa upon UV₂₅₄ irradiation. The reversibility of the photocycloaddition of coumarin enables the application of RPSF as a photodismantlable adhesive. Furthermore, unprecedented vat-photocycloaddition 3D printing of silicone rubber is realized by taking advantage of the excellent photocurability, i.e., dramatic increase in viscoelasticity upon UV₃₆₅ irradiation. Robust Natural Polyphenolic Adhesives against Various Harsh Environments

Although adhesive hydrogels have been extensively explored, the development of adhesives with long-term strong adhesion capacity under various harsh environments is still met with profound challenges such as sophisticated preparation, long-term curing, and low bonding strength. Herein, a series of robust adhesive hydrogels have been developed via the polyphenol-epoxy-cross-linking (PEC) reactions between natural polyphenols (extracts) and epoxy glycidyl ethers. The as-prepared natural polyphenolic adhesive hydrogels could induce strong adhesion onto several kinds of typical substrates (i.e., wood, glass, paper, PET, PMMA, and Fe) under both dry and wet conditions based on multi-interactions. Moreover, those natural polyphenolic adhesives exhibited good low-temperature and solvent resistance performances, which could be widely used in different kinds of device repairment (i.e., chemical, petroleum, wood, metal, glass, plastic, rubber, and other industries) under different conditions. This work could provide new opportunities toward natural-inspired robust adhesives in various fields ranging from chemical transportation, industrial manufacturing, architectural design, and marine engineering to daily life.

Switchable Adhesion: On-Demand Bonding and Debonding

Adhesives have a long and illustrious history throughout human history. The development of synthetic polymers has highly improved adhesions in terms of their strength and environmental tolerance. As soft robotics, flexible electronics, and intelligent gadgets become more prevalent, adhesives with changeable adhesion capabilities will become more necessary. These adhesives should be programmable and switchable, with the ability to respond to light, electromagnetic fields, thermal, and other stimuli. These requirements necessitate novel concepts in adhesion engineering and material science. Considerable studies have been carried out to develop a wide range of adhesives. This review focuses on stimuli-responsive material-based adhesives, outlining current research on switchable and controlled adhesives, including design and manufacturing techniques. Finally, the potential for smart adhesives in applications, and the development of future adhesive forms are critically suggested.
