Direct metal-carbon bonding in symmetric bis(C-H) agostic nickel(i) complexes

Synthesis and reactivity of alkali metal aluminates bearing bis(organoamido)phosphane ligand

In this study, we report a group of alkali metal aluminates bearing bis(organoamido)phosphane ligand. The starting complex {[PhP(NtBu)2]AlMe2}Li·OEt2 (1) was prepared by stepwise deprotonation of the parent PhP(NHtBu)2 by nBuLi and AlMe3. Further derivatization of aluminate 1 was performed by the virtual substitution of lithium -{[PhP(NtBu)2]AlMe2}K (2), methyl substituents - {[PhP(NtBu)2]AlH2}Li·THF (3), modification of steric bulk and induction effects on the phosphorus atom - {[tBuP(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]AlMe2}Li·(OEt2)2 (4), and phosphorus atom oxidation state {[Ph(Y)P(NtBu)2]AlMe2}Li (Y = O (5), S (6), Se (7), Te (8)). The structure causing non-covalent interactions in 1-4 were evaluated with the help of theoretical calculations and topological analysis ranging from π-electron system-metal to agostic interactions of various types. The further reactions of 1 with various nucleophiles were found to be a versatile tool for the preparation of iminophosphonamides via the formation of P-E bond (E = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, P, and C) and followed by P(III) → P(V) tautomeric shift.

Reversible Modulation of the Electronic and Spatial Environment around Ni(0) Centers Bearing Multifunctional Carbene Ligands with Triarylaluminum

Designing and modulating the electronic and spatial environments surrounding metal centers is a crucial issue in a wide range of chemistry fields that use organometallic compounds. Herein, we demonstrate a Lewis-acid-mediated reversible expansion, contraction, and transformation of the spatial environment surrounding nickel(0) centers that bear N-phosphine oxide-substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes (henceforth referred to as (S)PoxIms). Reaction between tetrahedral (syn-κ-C,O-(S)PoxIm)Ni(CO)₂ and Al(C₆F₅)₃ smoothly afforded heterobimetallic Ni/Al species such as trigonal-planar {κ-C-Ni(CO)₂}(μ-anti-(S)PoxIm){κ-O-Al(C₆F₅)₃} via a complexation-induced rotation of the N-phosphine oxide moieties, while the addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine resulted in the quantitative regeneration of the former Ni complexes. The corresponding interconversion also occurred between (SPoxIm)Ni(η²:η²-diphenyldivinylsilane) and {κ-C-Ni(η²:η²-diene)}(μ-anti-SPoxIm){κ-O-Al(C₆F₅)₃} via the coordination and dissociation of Al(C₆F₅)₃. The shape and size of the space around the Ni(0) center was drastically changed through this Lewis-acid-mediated interconversion. Moreover, the multinuclear NMR, IR, and XAS analyses of the aforementioned carbonyl complexes clarified the details of the changes in the electronic states on the Ni centers; i.e., the electron delocalization was effectively enhanced among the Ni atom and CO ligands in the heterobimetallic Ni/Al species. The results presented in this work thus provide a strategy for reversibly modulating both the electronic and spatial environment of organometallic complexes, in addition to the well-accepted Lewis-base-mediated ligand-substitution methods.

Coordination-Induced Weakening of a C(sp3)-H Bond: Homolytic and Heterolytic Bond Strength of a CH-Ni Agostic Interaction

The scission of a C(sp³)-H bond to form a new metal-alkyl bond is a fundamental step in coordination chemistry and catalysis. However, the extent of C-H bond weakening when this moiety interacts with a transition metal is poorly understood and quantifying this phenomenon could provide insights into designing more efficient C-H functionalization catalysts. We present a nickel complex with a robust adamantyl reporter ligand that enables the measurement of C-H acidity (pK_a) and bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) for a C(sp³)-H agostic interaction, showing a decrease in pK_a by dozens of orders of magnitude and BDFE decrease of about 30 kcal/mol upon coordination. X-ray crystallographic data is provided for all molecules, including a distorted square planar Ni^III metalloradical and "doubly agostic" Ni^II(κ²-CH₂) complex.
