Structural resolution and mechanistic insight into hydrogen adsorption in flexible ZIF-7

Size-Dependent Spin Crossover and Bond Flexibility in Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles

Size reduction offers a synthetic route to tunable phase change behavior. Preparing materials as nanoparticles causes drastic modulations to critical temperatures (Tc), hysteresis widths, and the "sharpness" of first-order versus second-order phase transitions. A microscopic picture of the chemistry underlying this size dependence in phenomena ranging from melting to superconductivity remains debated. As a case study with broad implications, we report that size-dependent spin crossover (SCO) in nanocrystals of the metal-organic framework (MOF) Fe(1,2,3-triazolate)2 arises from metal-linker bonds becoming more labile in smaller particles. In comparison to the bulk material, differential scanning calorimetry indicates a ∼ 30-40% reduction in Tc and ΔH in the smallest particles. Variable-temperature vibrational spectroscopy reveals a diminished long-range structural cooperativity, while X-ray diffraction evidence an over 3-fold increase in the thermal expansion coefficients. This "phonon softening" provides a molecular mechanism for designing size-dependent behavior in framework materials and for understanding phase changes in general.

Chemoselectivity Inversion of Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks by Particle Size Tuning in the Micrometer Regime

Gated adsorption is one of the unique physical properties of flexible metal-organic frameworks with high application potential in selective adsorption and sensing of molecules. Despite recent studies that have provided some guidelines in understanding and designing structural flexibility for controlling gate opening by chemical modification of the secondary building units, currently, there is no established strategy to design a flexible MOF showing selective gated adsorption for a specific guest molecule. In a present contribution it is demonstrated for the first time, that the selectivity in the gate opening of a particular compound can be tuned, changed, and even reversed using particle size engineering DUT-8(Zn) ([Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco)]n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane, DUT = Dresden University of Technology) experiences phase transition from open (op) to closed (cp) pore phase upon removal of solvent from the pores. Microcrystals show selective reopening in the presence of dichloromethane (DCM) over alcohols. Crystal downsizing to micron size unexpectedly reverses the gate opening selectivity, causing DUT-8(Zn) to open its nanosized pores for alcohols but suppressing the responsivity toward DCM.

Highly porous metal-organic framework liquids and glasses via a solvent-assisted linker exchange strategy of ZIF-8

By combining the porosity of crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the unique processability of the liquid state, melt-quenched MOF glasses offer exciting opportunities for molecular separation. However, progress in this field is limited by two factors. Firstly, only very few MOFs melt at elevated temperatures and transform into stable glasses upon cooling the corresponding MOF liquid. Secondly, the MOF glasses obtained thus far feature only very small porosities and very small pore sizes. Here, we demonstrate solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) as a versatile method to prepare highly porous melt-quenched MOF glasses from the canonical ZIF-8. Two additional organic linkers are incorporated into the non-meltable ZIF-8, yielding high-entropy, linker-exchanged ZIF-8 derivatives undergoing crystal-to-liquid-to-glass phase transitions by thermal treatment. The ZIF-8 glasses demonstrate specific pore volumes of about 0.2 cm3g-1, adsorb large amounts of technologically relevant C3 and C4 hydrocarbons, and feature high kinetic sorption selectivities for the separation of propylene from propane.

Effect of Boron-Doping on Gate-Opening CO2 Adsorption in Zinc-Benzimidazolate Coordination Networks

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention as selective gas adsorption and storage. This report describes boron doping in zeolitic imidazolate framework-7 (B-ZIF-7), which exhibits reversible phase transition during CO2 adsorption/desorption. We have successfully prepared B-ZIF-7 coordination networks using boron-bridged benzimidazolate (B(bim)4-) as organic ligands. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements and infrared spectroscopy revealed that B-ZIF-7 has a crystal structure similar to that of ZIF-7 while containing boron bridging in the coordination network. Since B-ZIF-7 forms a cationic coordination network, the guest anions are encapsulated within the pore. CO2 adsorption/desorption measurements at 300 K showed that B-ZIF-7(NO3), which contains nitrate ions (NO3-) as guest anions in its pores, exhibits a S-shaped CO2 adsorption/desorption isotherm, which is characteristic of gate-opening type MOFs. Compared with ZIF-7, B-ZIF-7(NO3) has superior CO2 adsorption capacity in the low-pressure and superior CO2 storage capacity. The CO2 adsorption and desorption behavior of B-ZIF-7(NO3) was analyzed by in situ temperature-controlled PXRD measurements and thermogravimetric analysis under a CO2 atmosphere, and a reversible phase transition was observed. We have also successfully prepared B-ZIF-7(Cl) and B-ZIF-7(OTf) (OTf = CF3SO3-) with different guest anions. The CO2 adsorption/desorption behaviors of B-ZIF-7(Cl) and B-ZIF-7(OTf) were significantly different from those of B-ZIF-7(NO3) and ZIF-7. B-ZIF-7(Cl) showed gate opening at a higher pressure than ZIF-7, and B-ZIF-7(OTf) did not show S-shaped CO2 adsorption isotherm and showed adsorption behavior in micropores. These results indicate that the CO2 adsorption behavior of B-ZIF-7 depends on the interaction between the guest anions and CO2 molecules or the cationic framework and the bulkiness of the guest anions. Boron doping in a coordination network with boron-bridged imidazolate ligands is a promising strategy to increase the gas adsorption capability of porous materials.

Friends or Foes: Fundamental Principles of Th-Organic Scaffold Chemistry Using Zr-Analogs as a Guide

The fundamental interest in actinide chemistry, particularly for the development of thorium-based materials, is experiencing a renaissance owing to the recent and rapidly growing attention to fuel cycle reactors, radiological daughters for nuclear medicine, and efficient nuclear stockpile development. Herein, we uncover fundamental principles of thorium chemistry on the example of Th-based extended structures such as metal-organic frameworks in comparison with the discrete systems and zirconium extended analogs, demonstrating remarkable over two-and-half-year chemical stability of Th-based frameworks as a function of metal node connectivity, amount of defects, and conformational linker rigidity through comprehensive spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis as well as theoretical modeling. Despite exceptional chemical stability, we report the first example of studies focusing on the reactivity of the most chemically stable Th-based frameworks in comparison with the discrete Th-based systems such as metal-organic complexes and a cage, contrasting multicycle recyclability and selectivity (>97%) of the extended structures in comparison with the molecular compounds. Overall, the presented work not only establishes the conceptual foundation for evaluating the capabilities of Th-based materials but also represents a milestone for their multifaceted future and foreshadows their potential to shape the next era of actinide chemistry.

Adaptive Pore Opening to Form Tailored Adsorption Sites in a Cooperatively Flexible Framework Enables Record Inverse Propane/Propylene Separation

A proposed low-energy alternative to the separation of alkanes from alkenes by energy-intensive cryogenic distillation is separation by porous adsorbents. Unfortunately, most adsorbents preferentially take up the desired, high-value major component alkene, requiring frequent regeneration. Adsorbents with inverse selectivity for the minor component alkane would enable the direct production of purified, reagent-grade alkene, greatly reducing global energy consumption. However, such materials are exceedingly rare, especially for propane/propylene separation. Here, we report that through adaptive and spontaneous pore size and shape adaptation to optimize an ensemble of weak noncovalent interactions, the structurally responsive metal-organic framework CdIF-13 (sod-Cd(benzimidazolate)2) exhibits inverse selectivity for propane over propylene with record-setting separation performance under industrially relevant temperature, pressure, and mixture conditions. Powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements combined with first-principles calculations yield atomic-scale insight and reveal the induced fit mechanism of adsorbate-specific pore adaptation and ensemble interactions between ligands and adsorbates. Dynamic column breakthrough measurements confirm that CdIF-13 displays selectivity under mixed-component conditions of varying ratios, with a record measured selectivity factor of α ≈ 3 at 95:5 propylene:propane at 298 K and 1 bar. When sequenced with a low-cost rigid adsorbent, we demonstrated the direct purification of propylene under ambient conditions. This combined atomic-level structural characterization and performance testing firmly establishes how cooperatively flexible materials can be capable of unprecedented separation factors.

Breathing porous liquids based on responsive metal-organic framework particles

Responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that display sigmoidal gas sorption isotherms triggered by discrete gas pressure-induced structural transformations are highly promising materials for energy related applications. However, their lack of transportability via continuous flow hinders their application in systems and designs that rely on liquid agents. We herein present examples of responsive liquid systems which exhibit a breathing behaviour and show step-shaped gas sorption isotherms, akin to the distinct oxygen saturation curve of haemoglobin in blood. Dispersions of flexible MOF nanocrystals in a size-excluded silicone oil form stable porous liquids exhibiting gated uptake for CO₂, propane and propylene, as characterized by sigmoidal gas sorption isotherms with distinct transition steps. In situ X-ray diffraction studies show that the sigmoidal gas sorption curve is caused by a narrow pore to large pore phase transformation of the flexible MOF nanocrystals, which respond to gas pressure despite being dispersed in silicone oil. Given the established flexible nature and tunability of a range of MOFs, these results herald the advent of breathing porous liquids whose sorption properties can be tuned rationally for a variety of technological applications.

One Atom Can Make All the Difference: Gas-Induced Phase Transformations in Bisimidazole-Linked Diamondoid Coordination Networks

Coordination networks (CNs) that undergo gas-induced transformation from closed (nonporous) to open (porous) structures are of potential utility in gas storage applications, but their development is hindered by limited control over their switching mechanisms and pressures. In this work, we report two CNs, [Co(bimpy)(bdc)]_n (X-dia-4-Co) and [Co(bimbz)(bdc)]_n (X-dia-5-Co) (H₂bdc = 1,4-benzendicarboxylic acid; bimpy = 2,5-bis(1H-imidazole-1-yl)pyridine; bimbz = 1,4-bis(1H-imidazole-1-yl)benzene), that both undergo transformation from closed to isostructural open phases involving at least a 27% increase in cell volume. Although X-dia-4-Co and X-dia-5-Co only differ from one another by one atom in their N-donor linkers (bimpy = pyridine, and bimbz = benzene), this results in different pore chemistry and switching mechanisms. Specifically, X-dia-4-Co exhibited a gradual phase transformation with a steady increase in the uptake when exposed to CO₂, whereas X-dia-5-Co exhibited a sharp step (type F-IV isotherm) at P/P₀ ≈ 0.008 or P ≈ 3 bar (195 or 298 K, respectively). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, in situ powder XRD, in situ IR, and modeling (density functional theory calculations, and canonical Monte Carlo simulations) studies provide insights into the nature of the switching mechanisms and enable attribution of pronounced differences in sorption properties to the changed pore chemistry.

Dual-crosslinked network of polyacrylamide-carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel promotes osteogenic differentiation in vitro

In our previous study, we successfully designed a dual-crosslinked network hydrogel by introducing the monomers acrylamide (AM), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), and alendronate (Aln). With the simultaneous presentation of physical and chemical crosslinks, the fabricated hydrogel with 10 % concentration of Aln@ZIF-8 (PAM-CMC-10%Aln@ZIF-8) exhibited excellent mechanical characteristics, high Aln loading efficiency (63.83 %), and a slow release period (6 d). These results demonstrate that PAM-CMC-10%Aln@ZIF-8 is a potential carrier for delaying Aln. In this study, we mainly focused on the biocompatibility and osteogenic ability of PAM-CMC-10%Aln@ZIF-8 in vitro, which is a continuation of our previous work. First, this study investigated the biocompatibility of dual-crosslinked hydrogels using calcein-AM/Propidium Iodide and cell counting kit-8. The morphology of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells was assessed using FITC-phalloidin/DAPI and vinculin immunostaining. Finally, osteogenic induction ability in vitro was assessed via alkaline phosphatase expression and alizarin red S staining, which was also confirmed using real-time PCR at the gene level and immunofluorescence at the protein level. The results indicated that the introduction of Aln enabled a dual-crosslinked hydrogel with superior biocompatibility and outstanding osteogenic differentiation ability in vitro, providing a solid foundation for subsequent animal experiments in vivo.

Surprising Use of the Business Innovation Bass Diffusion Model To Accurately Describe Adsorption Isotherm Types I, III, and V

Using adsorption isotherm data to determine heats of adsorption or predict mixture adsorption using the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) relies on accurate fits of the data with continuous, mathematical models. Here, we derive an empirical two-parameter model to fit isotherm data of IUPAC types I, III, and V in a descriptive way based on the Bass model for innovation diffusion. We report 31 isotherm fits to existing literature data covering all six types of isotherms, various adsorbents, such as carbons, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as well as different adsorbing gases (water, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen). We find several cases, especially for flexible MOFs, where previously reported isotherm models reached their limits and either failed to fit the data or could not sufficiently be fitted due to stepped type V isotherms. Moreover, in two instances, models specifically developed for distinct systems are fitted with a higher R² value compared to the models in the original reports. Using these fits, it is demonstrated how the new Bingel-Walton isotherm can be used to qualitatively assess the hydrophilic or hydrophobic behavior of porous materials from the relative magnitude of the two fitting parameters. The model can also be employed to find matching heats of adsorption values for systems with isotherm steps using one, continuous fit instead of partial, stepwise fits or interpolation. Additionally, using our single, continuous fit to model stepped isotherms in IAST mixture adsorption predictions leads to good agreement with the results from the osmotic framework adsorbed solution theory that was specifically developed for these systems using a stepwise, approximate fitting, which is yet far more complex. Our new isotherm equation accomplishes all of these tasks with only two fitted parameters, providing a simple, accurate method for modeling a variety of adsorption behavior.

Multivariate zeolitic imidazolate frameworks with an inverting trend in flexibility

Through systematic linker substitution in a flexible zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) with step-shaped adsorption-desorption, structural intermediates between the known open and closed phases were isolated. Reflecting this, modulative sorption behaviour with an inverting adsorption pressure trend-in which the step pressure decreases and then increases again with increasing mixed linker concentration-is observed, highlighting how linker substitution modifies the energetic landscape of framework flexibility.

Large breathing effect in ZIF-65(Zn) with expansion and contraction of the SOD cage

The flexibility and guest-responsive behavior of some metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) indicate their potential in the fields of sensors and molecular recognition. As a subfamily of MOFs, the flexible zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) typically feature a small displacive transition due to the rigid zeolite topology. Herein, an atypical reversible displacive transition (6.4 Å) is observed for the sodalite (SOD) cage in flexible ZIF-65(Zn), which represents an unusually large breathing effect compared to other ZIFs. ZIF-65(Zn) exhibits a stepwise II → III → I expansion between an unusual ellipsoidal SOD cage (8.6 Å × 15.9 Å for II) and a spherical SOD cage (15.0 Å for I). The breathing behavior of ZIF-65(Zn) varies depending on the nature of the guest molecules (polarity and shape). Computational simulations are employed to rationalize the differences in the breathing behavior depending on the structure of the ZIF-65(Zn) cage and the nature of the guest-associated host–guest and guest–guest interactions.

Flexible metal-organic frameworks have potential applications in the development of sensors and switching materials. Here, the authors report a large breathing effect in a zeolitic imidazolate framework upon guest adsorption.

Recent Progress Using Solid-State Materials for Hydrogen Storage: A Short Review

With the rapid growth in demand for effective and renewable energy, the hydrogen era has begun. To meet commercial requirements, efficient hydrogen storage techniques are required. So far, four techniques have been suggested for hydrogen storage: compressed storage, hydrogen liquefaction, chemical absorption, and physical adsorption. Currently, high-pressure compressed tanks are used in the industry; however, certain limitations such as high costs, safety concerns, undesirable amounts of occupied space, and low storage capacities are still challenges. Physical hydrogen adsorption is one of the most promising techniques; it uses porous adsorbents, which have material benefits such as low costs, high storage densities, and fast charging–discharging kinetics. During adsorption on material surfaces, hydrogen molecules weakly adsorb at the surface of adsorbents via long-range dispersion forces. The largest challenge in the hydrogen era is the development of progressive materials for efficient hydrogen storage. In designing efficient adsorbents, understanding interfacial interactions between hydrogen molecules and porous material surfaces is important. In this review, we briefly summarize a hydrogen storage technique based on US DOE classifications and examine hydrogen storage targets for feasible commercialization. We also address recent trends in the development of hydrogen storage materials. Lastly, we propose spillover mechanisms for efficient hydrogen storage using solid-state adsorbents.
