Propane dehydrogenation over extra-framework In(i) in chabazite zeolites

Confining platinum clusters in indium-modified ZSM-5 zeolite to promote propane dehydrogenation

Designing highly active and stable catalytic sites is often challenging due to the complex synthesis procedure and the agglomeration of active sites during high-temperature reactions. Here, we report a facile two-step method to synthesize Pt clusters confined by In-modified ZSM-5 zeolite. In-situ characterization confirms that In is located at the extra-framework position of ZSM-5 as In+, and the Pt clusters are stabilized by the In-ZSM-5 zeolite. The resulting Pt clusters confined in In-ZSM-5 show excellent propane conversion, propylene selectivity, and catalytic stability, outperforming monometallic Pt, In, and bimetallic PtIn alloys. The incorporation of In+ in ZSM-5 neutralizes Brønsted acid sites to inhibit side reactions, as well as tunes the electronic properties of Pt clusters to facilitate propane activation and propylene desorption. The strategy of combining precious metal clusters with metal cation-exchanged zeolites opens the avenue to develop stable heterogeneous catalysts for other reaction systems.

Intermediate Transfer Rates and Solid-State Ion Exchange are Key Factors Determining the Bifunctionality of In2O3/HZSM-5 Tandem CO2 Hydrogenation Catalyst

Identifying the descriptors for the synergistic catalytic activity of bifunctional oxide-zeolite catalysts constitutes a formidable challenge in realizing the potential of tandem hydrogenation of CO2 to hydrocarbons (HC) for sustainable fuel production. Herein, we combined CH3OH synthesis from CO2 and H2 on In2O3 and methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) conversion on HZSM-5 and discerned the descriptors by leveraging the distance-dependent reactivity of bifunctional In2O3 and HZSM-5 admixtures. We modulated the distance between redox sites of In2O3 and acid sites of HZSM-5 from milliscale (∼10 mm) to microscale (∼300 μm) and observed a 3-fold increase in space-time yield of HC and CH3OH (7.5 × 10-5 molC gcat-1 min-1 and 2.5 × 10-5 molC gcat-1 min-1, respectively), due to a 10-fold increased rate of CH3OH advection (1.43 and 0.143 s-1 at microscale and milliscale, respectively) from redox to acid sites. Intriguingly, despite the potential of a three-order-of-magnitude enhanced CH3OH transfer at a nanoscale distance (∼300 nm), the sole product formed was CH4. Our reactivity data combined with Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the occurrence of solid-state-ion-exchange (SSIE) between acid sites and Inδ+ ions, likely forming In2O moieties, inhibiting C-C coupling and promoting CH4 formation through CH3OH hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that CH3OH adsorption on the In2O moiety with preadsorbed and dissociated H2 forming an H-In-OH-In moiety is the likely reaction mechanism, with the kinetically relevant step appearing to be the hydrogenation of the methyl species. Overall, our study revealed that efficient CH3OH transfer and prevention of ion exchange are the key descriptors in achieving catalytic synergy in bifunctional In2O3/HZSM-5 systems.

Amorphous CeOx Islands on Dealuminated Zeolite Beta to Stabilize Pt Nanoparticles as Efficient and Antisintering Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation

Pt-based catalysts have been widely used in propane dehydrogenation due to their superior activation of C-H bonds and weak scission of C-C bonds. However, in the process of repeated calcination to remove deposited coke, the active Pt species tend to sinter, resulting in a significant decline in catalytic activity. In this study, amorphous CeOx islands loaded on dealuminated Beta zeolite were prepared via simple wetness impregnation. Then, partially embedded Pt nanoparticles in CeOx islands were obtained after reduction owing to the affinity of CeOx for Pt. In the propane dehydrogenation reaction, Pt/Ce5-SiBeta with a Ce loading of 4.55 wt % and Pt loading of 0.72 wt % exhibited the highest activity and the lowest inactivation constant at 550 °C. More importantly, due to the anchoring effect of CeOx on Pt, the catalytic activity of Pt could be recovered after a simple calcination-reduction regeneration process, avoiding the chlorination treatment for the redispersion of Pt species used in industry. In addition, to improve the selectivity of the Pt/Ce5-SiBeta catalyst, a PtSn/Ce5-SiBeta catalyst with excellent activity, selectivity, and recycling stability has been prepared by introducing Sn into Pt/Ce5-SiBeta. The use of amorphous CeOx islands to improve the sintering resistance of Pt opens up new prospects for the design of stable industrial dehydrogenation catalysts.

Site Diversity and Mechanism of Metal-Exchanged Zeolite Catalyzed Non-Oxidative Propane Dehydrogenation

Metal-exchanged zeolites are well-known propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts; however, the structure of the active species remains unresolved. In this review, existing PDH catalysts are first surveyed, and then the current understanding of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts is described in detail. The case of Ga/H-ZSM-5 is employed to showcase that advances in the understanding of structure-activity relations are often accompanied by technological or conceptional breakthroughs. The understanding of Ga speciation at PDH conditions has evolved owing to the advent of in situ/operando characterizations and to the realization that the local coordination environment of Ga species afforded by the zeolite support has a decisive impact on the active site structure. In situ/operando quantitative characterization of catalysts, rigorous determination of intrinsic reaction rates, and predictive computational modeling are all significant in identifying the most active structure in these complex systems. The reaction mechanism could be both intricately related to and nearly independent of the details of the assumed active structure, as in the two main proposed PDH mechanisms on Ga/H-ZSM-5, that is, the carbenium mechanism and the alkyl mechanism. Perspectives on potential approaches to further elucidate the active structure of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts and reaction mechanisms are discussed in the final section.

Carbon supported Pd based catalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogeneration of morpholine borane

Although the reducing property of morpholine borane is frequently used, there are few studies on its use as a chemical hydrogen storage material. This study presents the catalyst efficiency for hydrogen production in the dehydrogenation reaction of morpholine borane as efficient and cost-effective hydrogen storage material, which can be used as an alternative to depleting fossil fuels. It was studied with four different catalysts as activated Carbon-supported Pd, PdAg, PdNi, and PdCo. Bimetallic palladium based catalysts were used for the dehydrogenation of morpholine borane for the first time. Nanoparticles were synthesized using the chemical reduction method. The catalytic effects of different metal ratios of PdNi/C nanoparticles, which were concluded to have the best catalyst effect, were investigated and it was observed that the ratio of Pd₅₀Ni₅₀/C nanoparticles exhibited better catalytic behavior, and optimization studies were carried out with Pd₅₀Ni₅₀/C nanoparticles. Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analyzes were performed for the characterization of nanoparticles. According to the characterization analyzes of Pd₅₀Ni₅₀/C nanoparticles, the mean particle size was determined as 2.0 ± 1.0 nm. Catalyst efficiency was determined by performing the substrate, catalyst, and temperature experiments separately in the dehydrogenation reaction of Morpholine Borane. These parameters are respectively; Ea and ΔH were calculated as 93.2 kJ/mol, and 90.6 kJ/mol. The reusability experiments were carried out in 4 cycles. In other words, with this study, it was concluded that the reusability of Pd₅₀Ni₅₀/C nanoparticles synthesized by the chemical method is high and their catalytic activity is excellent.

Ga+-Chabazite Zeolite: A Highly Selective Catalyst for Nonoxidative Propane Dehydrogenation

Ga-chabazite zeolites (Ga-CHA) have been found to efficiently catalyze propane dehydrogenation with high propylene selectivity (96%). In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and pulse titrations are employed to determine that upon reduction, surface Ga₂O₃ is reduced and diffuses into the zeolite pores, displacing the Brønsted acid sites and forming extra-framework Ga⁺ sites. This isolated Ga⁺ site reacts reversibly with H₂ to form GaH_x (2034 cm^-1) with an enthalpy of formation of ∼-51.2 kJ·mol^-1, a result supported by density functional theory calculations. The initial C₃H₈ dehydrogenation rates decrease rapidly (40%) during the first 100 min and then decline slowly afterward, while the C₃H₆ selectivity is stable at ∼96%. The reduction in the reaction rate is correlated with the formation of polycyclic aromatics inside the zeolite (using UV-vis spectroscopy) indicating that the accumulation of polycyclic aromatics is the main cause of the deactivation. The carbon species formed can be easily oxidized at 600 °C with complete recovery of the PDH catalytic properties. The correlations between GaH_x vs Ga/Al ratio and PDH rates vs Ga/Al ratio show that extra-framework Ga⁺ is the active center catalyzing propane dehydrogenation. The higher reaction rate on Ga⁺ than In⁺ in CHA zeolites, by a factor of 43, is the result of differences in the stabilization of the transition state due to the higher stability of Ga³⁺ vs In³⁺. The uniformity of the Ga⁺ sites in this material makes it an excellent model for the molecular understanding of metal cation-exchanged hydrocarbon interactions in zeolites.
