Emergent vortices and phase separation in systems of chiral active particles with dipolar interactions

Time-reversal and parity-time symmetry breaking in non-Hermitian field theories

We study time-reversal symmetry breaking in non-Hermitian fluctuating field theories with conserved dynamics, comprising the mesoscopic descriptions of a wide range of nonequilibrium phenomena. They exhibit continuous parity-time (PT) symmetry-breaking phase transitions to dynamical phases. For two concrete transition scenarios, exclusive to non-Hermitian dynamics, namely, oscillatory instabilities and critical exceptional points, a low-noise expansion exposes a pretransitional surge of the mesoscale (informatic) entropy production rate, inside the static phases. Its scaling in the susceptibility contrasts conventional critical points (such as second-order phase transitions), where the susceptibility also diverges, but the entropy production generally remains finite. The difference can be attributed to active fluctuations in the wavelengths that become unstable. For critical exceptional points, we identify the coupling of eigenmodes as the entropy-generating mechanism, causing a drastic noise amplification in the Goldstone mode.

Chiral active matter in external potentials

We investigate the interplay between chirality and confinement induced by the presence of an external potential. For potentials having radial symmetry, the circular character of the trajectories induced by the chiral motion reduces the spatial fluctuations of the particle, thus providing an extra effective confining mechanism, that can be interpreted as a lowering of the effective temperature. In the case of non-radial potentials, for instance, with an elliptic shape, chirality displays a richer scenario. Indeed, the chirality can break the parity symmetry of the potential that is always fulfilled in the non-chiral system. The probability distribution displays a strong non-Maxwell-Boltzmann shape that emerges in cross-correlations between the two Cartesian components of the position, that vanishes in the absence of chirality or when radial symmetry of the potential is restored. These results are obtained by considering two popular models in active matter, i.e. chiral Active Brownian particles and chiral active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles.

Collective behavior of chiral active particles with anisotropic interactions in a confined space

Extensive studies so far have indicated that chirality, anisotropic interactions and spatial confinement play important roles in collective dynamics in active matter systems. However, how the overall interplay of these crucial factors affects the novel phases and macroscopic properties remains less explored. Here, using Langevin dynamics simulations, we investigate the self-organization of a chiral active system composed of amphiphilic Janus particles, where the embedded anisotropic interaction orientation is assumed to be either the same or just opposite to the direction of active force. A wealth of dynamic phases are observed including formation of phase separation, clustering state, homogeneous state, spiral vortex flow, swarm and spatiotemporal oscillation. By tuning self-propelled angular speed and anisotropic interaction strength, we identify the non-equilibrium phase diagrams, and reveal the very non-trivial modulation of both vortex and swarm patterns. Intriguingly, we find that strong chirality-alignment-confinement coupling yields a self-driven spatial and temporal organization periodically oscillating between a counterclockwise vortex and a clockwise one. Our work provides a new understanding of the novel self-assembly arising in such a confined system and enables new strategies for achieving ordered dynamic structures.

Glassy Dynamics in Chiral Fluids

Chiral active matter is enjoying a rapid increase of interest, spurred by the rich variety of asymmetries that can be attained in, e.g., the shape or self-propulsion mechanism of active particles. Though this has already led to the observance of so-called chiral crystals, active chiral glasses remain largely unexplored. A possible reason for this could be the naive expectation that interactions dominate the glassy dynamics and the details of the active motion become increasingly less relevant. Here, we show that quite the opposite is true by studying the glassy dynamics of interacting chiral active Brownian particles. We demonstrate that when our chiral fluid is pushed to glassy conditions, it exhibits highly nontrivial dynamics, especially compared to a standard linear active fluid such as common active Brownian particles. Despite the added complexity, we are still able to present a full rationalization for all identified dynamical regimes. Most notably, we introduce a new "hammering" mechanism, unique to rapidly spinning particles in high-density conditions, that can fluidize a chiral active solid.

Tunable collective dynamics of ellipsoidal Quincke particles

Collective behaviors in active systems become dramatically complicated in the presence of chirality. In this study, we show that ellipsoidal Quincke particles driven by an electric field exhibit flexible and tunable chirality because of the tilting of the spinning axis. As the tilting torque decreases with the increase of angular speed, the motion of individual particles transforms from localized circle motion to global rolling. However, because of the anisotropic shape and the resulting anisotropic polar interactions, it is dynamically easier for ellipsoids to bind and form rotating structures rather than to align their velocities. In dense systems, the suppression of velocity aligning produces transient dense clusters which produce dynamic heterogeneity. The formation and dissociation of dense clusters prohibit the emergence of large-scale collective motions and limit the amplitude of density fluctuations. These findings demonstrate that collective dynamics and thus the scale of density fluctuations in active systems with tunable chirality can be well controlled. This has potential applications in exploring disordered hyperuniform states.

Hydrodynamic Synchronization of Chiral Microswimmers

We study synchronization in bulk suspensions of spherical microswimmers with chiral trajectories using large scale numerics. The model is generic. It corresponds to the lowest order solution of a general model for self-propulsion at low Reynolds numbers, consisting of a nonaxisymmetric rotating source dipole. We show that both purely circular and helical swimmers can spontaneously synchronize their rotation. The synchronized state corresponds to velocity alignment with high orientational order in both the polar and azimuthal directions. Finally, we consider a racemic mixture of helical swimmers where intraspecies synchronization is observed while the system remains as a spatially uniform fluid. Our results demonstrate hydrodynamic synchronization as a natural collective phenomenon for microswimmers with chiral trajectories.

Circular motion subject to external alignment under active driving: Nonlinear dynamics and the circle map

Hardly any real self-propelling or actively driven object is perfect. Thus, undisturbed motion will generally not follow straight lines but rather bent or circular trajectories. We here address self-propelled or actively driven objects that move in discrete steps and additionally tend to migrate towards a certain direction by discrete angular adjustment. Overreaction in the angular alignment is possible. This competition implies pronounced nonlinear dynamics including period doubling and chaotic behavior in a broad parameter regime. Such behavior directly affects the appearance of the trajectories. Furthermore, we address collective motion and effects of spatial self-concentration.

Non-Gaussian, transiently anomalous, and ergodic self-diffusion of flexible dumbbells in crowded two-dimensional environments: Coupled translational and rotational motions

We employ Langevin-dynamics simulations to unveil non-Brownian and non-Gaussian center-of-mass self-diffusion of massive flexible dumbbell-shaped particles in crowded two-dimensional solutions. We study the intradumbbell dynamics of the relative motion of the two constituent elastically coupled disks. Our main focus is on effects of the crowding fraction ϕ and of the particle structure on the diffusion characteristics. We evaluate the time-averaged mean-squared displacement (TAMSD), the displacement probability-density function (PDF), and the displacement autocorrelation function (ACF) of the dimers. For the TAMSD at highly crowded conditions of dumbbells, e.g., we observe a transition from the short-time ballistic behavior, via an intermediate subdiffusive regime, to long-time Brownian-like spreading dynamics. The crowded system of dimers exhibits two distinct diffusion regimes distinguished by the scaling exponent of the TAMSD, the dependence of the diffusivity on ϕ, and the features of the displacement-ACF. We attribute these regimes to a crowding-induced transition from viscous to viscoelastic diffusion upon growing ϕ. We also analyze the relative motion in the dimers, finding that larger ϕ suppress their vibrations and yield strongly non-Gaussian PDFs of rotational displacements. For the diffusion coefficients D(ϕ) of translational and rotational motion of the dumbbells an exponential decay with ϕ for weak and a power-law variation D(ϕ)∝(ϕ-ϕ^{★})^{2.4} for strong crowding is found. A comparison of simulation results with theoretical predictions for D(ϕ) is discussed and some relevant experimental systems are overviewed.
