Advances in Electrochemical Biosensors Based on Nanomaterials for Protein Biomarker Detection in Saliva

The focus on precise medicine enhances the need for timely diagnosis and frequent monitoring of chronic diseases. Moreover, the recent pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 poses a great demand for rapid detection and surveillance of viral infections. The detection of protein biomarkers and antigens in the saliva allows rapid identification of diseases or disease changes in scenarios where and when the test response at the point of care is mandated. While traditional methods of protein testing fail to provide the desired fast results, electrochemical biosensors based on nanomaterials hold perfect characteristics for the detection of biomarkers in point-of-care settings. The recent advances in electrochemical sensors for salivary protein detection are critically reviewed in this work, with emphasis on the role of nanomaterials to boost the biosensor analytical performance and increase the reliability of the test in human saliva samples. Furthermore, this work identifies the critical factors for further modernization of the nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors, envisaging the development and implementation of next-generation sample-in-answer-out systems.

Electrospinning-Based Carbon Nanofibers for Energy and Sensor Applications

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are the most basic structure of one-dimensional nanometer-scale sp2 carbon. The CNF’s structure provides fast current transfer and a large surface area and it is widely used as an energy storage material and as a sensor electrode material. Electrospinning is a well-known technology that enables the production of a large number of uniform nanofibers and it is the easiest way to mass-produce CNFs of a specific diameter. In this review article, we introduce an electrospinning method capable of manufacturing CNFs using a polymer precursor, thereafter, we present the technologies for manufacturing CNFs that have a porous and hollow structure by modifying existing electrospinning technology. This paper also discusses research on the applications of CNFs with various structures that have recently been developed for sensor electrode materials and energy storage materials.

Lithium-Sulfur Batteries Meet Electrospinning: Recent Advances and the Key Parameters for High Gravimetric and Volume Energy Density

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been regarded as a promising next-generation energy storage technology for their ultrahigh theoretical energy density compared with those of the traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, the practical applications of Li-S batteries are still blocked by notorious problems such as the shuttle effect and the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites. Recently, the rapid development of electrospinning technology provides reliable methods in preparing flexible nanofibers materials and is widely applied to Li-S batteries serving as hosts, interlayers, and separators, which are considered as a promising strategy to achieve high energy density flexible Li-S batteries. In this review, a fundamental introduction of electrospinning technology and multifarious electrospinning-based nanofibers used in flexible Li-S batteries are presented. More importantly, crucial parameters of specific capacity, electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio, sulfur loading, and cathode tap density are emphasized based on the proposed mathematic model, in which the electrospinning-based nanofibers are used as important components in Li-S batteries to achieve high gravimetric (WG ) and volume (WV ) energy density of 500 Wh kg-1 and 700 Wh L-1 , respectively. These systematic summaries not only provide the principles in nanofiber-based electrode design but also propose enlightening directions for the commercialized Li-S batteries with high WG and WV .

A Review on Electrospun Nanofibers Based Advanced Applications: From Health Care to Energy Devices

Electrospun nanofibers have been exploited in multidisciplinary fields with numerous applications for decades. Owing to their interconnected ultrafine fibrous structure, high surface-to-volume ratio, tortuosity, permeability, and miniaturization ability along with the benefits of their lightweight, porous nanofibrous structure, they have been extensively utilized in various research fields for decades. Electrospun nanofiber technologies have paved unprecedented advancements with new innovations and discoveries in several fields of application including energy devices and biomedical and environmental appliances. This review article focused on providing a comprehensive overview related to the recent advancements in health care and energy devices while emphasizing on the importance and uniqueness of utilizing nanofibers. A brief description regarding the effect of electrospinning techniques, setup modifications, and parameters optimization on the nanofiber morphology was also provided. The article is concluded with a short discussion on current research challenges and future perspectives.
