MIP integrated surface plasmon resonance in vitro detection of sodium benzoate

An advanced optic-fiber differential sensing system enhanced by molecularly imprinted polymer for specific sodium benzoate detection

A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) based microfiber differential demodulation sensing system for sodium benzoate (SB) concentration detection is proposed. The specific binding of MIP on the surface of microfibers with SB can lead to changes in local refractive index (RI). RI change induces a drift in the interference wavelength, which can be monitored by the power difference between two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The sensing system can detect SB in the concentration range of 0.1-50 μg/ml, and interference wavelength and FBG power difference sensitivities are 0.55 nm/(μg/ml) and 2.64 dB/(μg/ml) in the low concentration range of 0.1-1 μg/ml, respectively, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 μg/ml. This microfiber differential demodulation sensing system is not only simple to fabricate, but also simplifies the demodulation equipment to reduce the cost, which providing a simple, reliable and low-cost technique for the quantitative detection of SB concentration in beverages and flavoured foods.

Revisiting Protein-Copolymer Binding Mechanisms: Insights beyond the "Lock-and-Key" Model

The "lock-and-key" model that emphasizes the concept of chemical-structural complementary is the key mechanism for explaining the selectivity between small ligands and a larger adsorbent molecule. In this work, concerning the copolymer chain using only the combination of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and hydrophobic N-tert-butylacrylamide (TBAm) monomers and by large-scale atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, our results show that the flexible copolymer chain may exhibit strong binding affinity for the biomarker protein epithelial cell adhesion molecule, in the absence of hydrophobic matching and strong structural complementarity. This surprising binding behavior, which cannot be anticipated by the "lock-and-key" model, can be attributed to the preferential interactions established by the copolymer with the protein's hydrophilic exterior. We observe that increasing the fraction of incorporated TBAm monomers leads to a prevalence of interactions with asparagine and glutamine amino acids due to the emerging hydrogen bonding with both NIPAm and TBAm monomers. Our findings suggest the appearance of highly specific and high-affinity binding sites on the protein created by engineering the copolymer composition, which motivates the applications of copolymers as protein affinity reagents.

Conductive imprinted polymeric interfacially modified electrochemical sensors based on covalently bonded layer-by-layer assembly of Gr/Au with flower-like morphology for sensitive detection of 2,4,6-TCP

Polymeric membrane sensors based on molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been attractive analytical tools for detecting organic species. However, the MIPs in electrochemical sensors developed so far are usually prepared by in situ polymerization of pre-polymers and non-covalent adsorption on the surface of the working electrode. Meanwhile, the MIPs in the electrochemical sensors developed are typically made of a non-conductive polymer film. This results in a relatively low current due to the lack of electron transfer. Additionally, the smoothness of the traditional electrochemical substrate results in a low specific surface area, which reduces the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Here, we describe a novel electrochemical sensor with a conductive interface and MIPs modification. The electrochemical sensor was modified by covalent coupled layer by layer self-assembly with the imprinted polymer film. The incorporation of these two conductive functional materials improves the conductivity of the electrodes and provides interface support materials to obtain high specific surface area. By using 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as the model, the sensitivity of the developed conductive sensor was greatly improved compared to that of the traditional MIPs sensor. We believe that the proposed MIPs-based sensing strategy provides a general and convenient method for making sensitive and selective electrochemical sensors.

Colorimetric and absorbance based sensor for sulfide and bicarbonate ions by dye doped polymer composite

We have developed a simple, rapid and cost-effective Dual-channel "colorimetric and absorbance" sensor using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) capped Rhodamine6g (Rh6G) dye composite. Dye-doped polymer composite probe (PVPRH) exhibit intense, narrow absorption properties and long-term stability than the bare Rh6G. The probe's colorimetric relationship with pH was demonstrated by absorption titration. The PVPRH provides a sensitive dual channel method for the determination of sulfide and bicarbonate with colorimetric response and absorption quenching. The synthesized probe, as a two-faced, exhibited remarkable colorimetric responses from orange to pale yellow in the presence of S2- and orange to soft pink in the presence of HCO3- ion, which can be observed by the naked eye also. Under optimal conditions, the relative absorption intensity decreases with increasing ion concentration of sulfide and bicarbonate ions. This trend is observed within the probe solution concentration range of 5 mM to 50 mM. The Dye-doped polymer composite probe is easy, cost effective, rapid, and has real time detection capability for sulfide and bicarbonate ions. The composite probe is stable and optically modified and can be successfully used for detections of S2- and HCO3- ions as strip senor.
