Challenges and Future Perspectives in Photocatalysis: Conclusions from an Interdisciplinary Workshop

Photocatalysis is a versatile and rapidly developing field with applications spanning artificial photosynthesis, photo-biocatalysis, photoredox catalysis in solution or supramolecular structures, utilization of abundant metals and organocatalysts, sustainable synthesis, and plastic degradation. In this Perspective, we summarize conclusions from an interdisciplinary workshop of young principal investigators held at the Lorentz Center in Leiden in March 2023. We explore how diverse fields within photocatalysis can benefit from one another. We delve into the intricate interplay between these subdisciplines, by highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities presented by each field and how a multidisciplinary approach can drive innovation and lead to sustainable solutions for the future. Advanced collaboration and knowledge exchange across these domains can further enhance the potential of photocatalysis. Artificial photosynthesis has become a promising technology for solar fuel generation, for instance, via water splitting or CO2 reduction, while photocatalysis has revolutionized the way we think about assembling molecular building blocks. Merging such powerful disciplines may give rise to efficient and sustainable protocols across different technologies. While photocatalysis has matured and can be applied in industrial processes, a deeper understanding of complex mechanisms is of great importance to improve reaction quantum yields and to sustain continuous development. Photocatalysis is in the perfect position to play an important role in the synthesis, deconstruction, and reuse of molecules and materials impacting a sustainable future. To exploit the full potential of photocatalysis, a fundamental understanding of underlying processes within different subfields is necessary to close the cycle of use and reuse most efficiently. Following the initial interactions at the Lorentz Center Workshop in 2023, we aim to stimulate discussions and interdisciplinary approaches to tackle these challenges in diverse future teams.

Ultrafast Processes in Upper Excited Singlet States of Free and Caged 7-Diethylaminothiocoumarin

The photochemistry and photophysics of thiocarbonyl compounds, analogues of carbonyl compounds with sulfur, have long been overshadowed by their counterparts. However, recent interest in visible light reactions has reignited attention toward these compounds due to their unique excited-state properties. This study delves into the ultrafast dynamics of 7-diethylaminothiocoumarin (TC1), a close analogue of the well-known probe molecule coumarin 1 (C1), to estimate intersystem crossing rates, understand the mechanisms of fluorescence and phosphorescence, and evaluate TC1's potential as a solvation dynamics probe. Enclosing TC1 within an organic capsule indicates its potential applications, even in aqueous environments. Ultrafast studies reveal a dominant subpicosecond intersystem crossing process, indicating the importance of upper excited singlet and triplet states in the molecule's photochemistry. The distinct fluorescence and phosphorescence origins, along with the presence of closely spaced singlet excited states, support the observed efficient intersystem crossing. The sulfur atom alters the excited-state behavior, shedding light on reactive triplet states and paving the way for further investigations.

Structure, Dynamics, and Reactivity of Encapsulated Molecules in Restricted Spaces: Arylazoisoxazoles within an Octa Acid Capsule

In this study, a well-defined organic capsule assembled from two octa acid (OA) molecules acting as host and select arylazoisoxazoles (AAIO) acting as guests were employed to demonstrate that confined molecules have restricted freedom that translates into reaction selectivity in both ground and excited states. The behavior of these AAIO guests in confined capsules was found to be different from that found in both crystals, where there is very little freedom, and in isotropic solvents, where there is complete freedom. Through one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) 1H NMR spectroscopic experiments, we have established a relationship between structure, dynamics and reactivity of molecules confined in an OA capsule. Introduction of CF3 and CH3 substitution at the 4-position of the aryl group of AAIO reveals that in addition to space confinement, weak interactions between the guest and the OA capsule control the dynamics and reactivity of guest molecules. 1H NMR studies revealed that there is a temperature-dependence to guest molecules tumbling (180° rotation along the capsular short axis) within an OA capsule. While 1H NMR points to the occurrence of tumbling motion, MD simulations and simulation of the temperature-dependent NMR signals provide an insight into the mechanism of tumbling within OA capsules. Thermal and photochemical isomerization of AAIO were found to occur within an OA capsule just as in organic solvents. The observed selectivity noted during thermal and photo induced isomerization of OA encapsulated AAIOs can be qualitatively understood in terms of the well-known concepts due to Bell-Evans-Polanyi (BEP principle), Hammond and Zimmerman.

Photocatalysis Meets Confinement: An Emerging Opportunity for Photoinduced Organic Transformations

The self-assembled metal-organic cages (MOCs) have been evolved as a paradigm of enzyme-mimic catalysts since they are able to synergize multifunctionalities inherent in metal and organic components and constitute microenvironments characteristic of enzymatic spatial confinement and versatile host-guest interactions, thus facilitating unconventional organic transformations via unique driving-forces such as weak noncovalent binding and electron/energy transfer. Recently, MOC-based photoreactors emerged as a burgeoning platform of supramolecular photocatalysis, displaying anomalous reactivities and selectivities distinct from bulk solution. This perspective recaps two decades journey of the photoinduced radical reactions by using photoactive metal-organic cages (PMOCs) as artificial reactors, outlining how the cage-confined photocatalysis was evolved from stoichiometric photoreactions to photocatalytic turnover, from high-energy UV-irradiation to sustainable visible-light photoactivation, and from simple radical reactions to multi-level chemo- and stereoselectivities. We will focus on PMOCs that merge structural and functional biomimicry into a single-cage to behave as multi-role photoreactors, emphasizing their potentials in tackling current challenges in organic transformations through single-electron transfer (SET) or energy transfer (EnT) pathways in a simple, green while feasible manner.

Tuning the 1O2 Oxidation of a Phenol at the Air/Solid Interface of a Nanoparticle: Hydrophobic Surface Increases Oxophilicity

Although silica surfaces have been used in organic oxidations for the production of peroxides, studies of airborne singlet oxygen at interfaces are limited and have not found widespread advantages. Here, with prenyl phenol-coated silica and delivery of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) through the gas phase, we uncover significant selectivity for dihydrofuran formation over allylic hydroperoxide formation. The hydrophobic particle causes prenyl phenol to produce an iso-hydroperoxide intermediate with an internally protonated oxygen atom, which leads to dihydrofuran formation as well as O atom transfer. In contrast, hydrophilic particles cause prenyl phenol to produce allylic hydroperoxide, due to phenol OH hydrogen bonding with SiOH surface groups. Mechanistic insight is provided by air/nanoparticle interfaces coated with the prenyl phenol, in which product yield was 6-fold greater on the hydrophobic nanoparticles compared to the hydrophilic nanoparticles and total rate constants (ASI-k_T) of ¹O₂ were 13-fold greater on the hydrophobic vs hydrophilic nanoparticles. A slope intersection method was also developed that uses the airborne ¹O₂ lifetime (τ_airborne) and surface-associated ¹O₂ lifetime (τ_surf) to quantitate ¹O₂ transitioning from volatile to non-volatile and surface boundary (surface···¹O₂). Further mechanistic insights on the selectivity of the reaction of prenyl phenol with ¹O₂ was provided by density functional theory calculations.

Reversible Photoisomerization of Norbornadiene-Quadricyclane within a Confined Capsule

With the desire to develop a sustainable green method to store and release solar energy via a chemical reaction we have examined the well investigated norbornadiene-quadricyclane (NBD-QC) system in water. In this context, we have employed octa acid (OA) as the host that forms a capsule in water. According to ¹ H NMR spectra and diffusion constants OA forms a stable 2:2 complex with both NBD and QC and 1:1:2 mixed complex in presence of equal amounts of both NBD and QC. The photoconversion of NBD to QC within the OA capsule is clean without side reactions. In this case OA itself acts as a triplet sensitizer. Recognizing the disadvantage of this supramolecular approach, in the future we plan to look for visible light absorbing sensitizers to perform this conversion. The reverse reaction (QC to NBD) is achieved via electron transfer process with methylene blue as the sensitizer. This reverse reaction is also clean and no side products were detected. The preliminary results reported here provides 'proof of principle' for combining green, sustainable and supramolecular chemistries in the context of solar energy capture and release.
