Construction of resveratrol and quercetin nanoparticles based on folic acid targeted Maillard products between Jiuzao glutelin isolate and carboxymethyl chitosan: Improved stability and function

Advanced targeted nanoparticles (NPs) were designed to enhance the targeted delivery of resveratrol (RES) and quercetin (QUE) by utilizing carboxymethyl chitosan (CTS) and Jiuzao glutelin isolate (JGI) conjugates. Briefly, RES and QUE were encapsuled within CTS-JGI-2 (CTS/JGI, m/m, 2:1). The carrier's targeting properties were further improved through the incorporation of folic acid (FA) and polyethylenimine (PEI). Moreover, the stability against digestion was enhanced by incorporating baker yeast cell walls (BYCWs) to construct RES-QUE/FA-PEI/CTS-JGI-2/MAT/BYCW NPs. The results demonstrated that FA-PEI/CTS-JGI-2/MAT/BYCW NPs could improve cellular uptake and targeting property of RES and QUE through endocytosis of folic acid receptors (FOLRs). Additionally, RES-QUE successfully alleviated LPS- and DSS-induced inflammation by regulating NF-κB/IkBa/AP-1 and AMPK/SIRT1signaling pathways and reducing the secretion of inflammatory mediators and factors. These findings indicate FA-PEI/CTS-JGI-2/MAT/BYCW NPs hold promise as an oral drug delivery system with targeted delivery capacities for functional substances prone to instability in dietary supplements.

Golden Flower Tibetan Tea Polysaccharides Alleviate Constipation in Mice by Regulating Aquaporins-Mediated Water Transport System and Gut Microbiota

Constipation, a widespread gastrointestinal disorder, often leads to the exploration of natural remedies. This study examines the efficacy of Golden Flower Tibetan Tea Polysaccharides (GFTTPs) in alleviating constipation in mice. Chemical analyses reveal that GFTTPs possess O-H, carboxyl, carboxylic acid (-COOH), and C-O-C groups, alongside a porous crystal structure with thermal stability. In animal experiments, GFTTPs significantly upregulated aquaporin 3 (AQP3) and aquaporin 8 (AQP8) expressions in the colon, enhancing water absorption and reducing fecal water content. At a 400 mg/kg dosage, GFTTPs notably improved colonic tissue alterations and serum levels of excitatory neurotransmitters caused by loperamide hydrochloride. They also beneficially altered gut microbiota, increasing Coprococcus, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus populations. These changes correlated with improved stool frequency, consistency, and weight in constipated mice. Importantly, GFTTPs at 200 and 400 mg/kg doses exhibited comparable effects to the normal control group in key parameters, such as gastrointestinal transit rate and fecal moisture. These findings suggest that GFTTPs may serve as a potent natural remedy for constipation, offering significant therapeutic potential within the context of gut health and with promising implications for human applications.

Enhancing air treatment through controlled fabrication of transition metal-doped titanium dioxide nanocomposites for photocatalytic toluene degradation

Rapid industrial growth and urbanization have resulted in a significant rise in environmental pollution issues, particularly indoor air pollutants. As a result, it is crucial to design and develop technologies and/or catalysts that are not only cost-effective but also promising high performance and practical applicability. However, achieving this goal has been so far remained a challenging task. Herein, a series of transition metal M - TiO2 (M = W, Fe, Mn) nanocrystals was prepared for photocatalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), i.e., toluene. Of the nanocomposites tested, W-TiO2 showed significantly improved photocatalytic activity for VOC degradation under UV irradiation compared to the others. In particular, the optimized W dopant amount of 0.5 wt% resulted in the outstanding degradation performance of toluene (96%) for the obtained W-TiO2(0.5%) nanocomposite. Moreover, W-TiO2(0.5%) nanocomposite exhibited good stability for 32 h working under high toluene concentration (10 ppm) compared to the pristine TiO2. The current work demonstrates the potential usage of M - TiO2 nanocrystals, particularly W-TiO2(0.5%), as a promising photocatalyst for efficient VOCs degradation.

Impact of alloying iron pyrite by ruthenium on its band gap values and its insight to photovoltaic performance

In pursuit of augmenting the band gap value of thin films composed of F e S 2 Pyrite, our study encompasses both theoretical and experimental investigations. Specifically, we sought to delve into the electronic and optical properties of F e S 2 alloyed with ruthenium, denoted as F e 1 - x R u x S 2 , where x varied across a range of values (x = 0.3966, 0.1586, 0.0496, 0.0347, 0.0106, and 0.00). Our theoretical analysis employed the Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital technique within the Atomic-Sphere approximation (LMTO-ASA) framework, focusing on the density of states. In parallel, our experimental samples were fabricated via a cost-effective and straightforward method involving the sulfuration of amorphous iron oxide thin films, which were deposited through spray pyrolysis of an aqueous solution containing FeCl3.6H2O onto heated glass substrates at 400 °C. This comprehensive investigation sheds light on the influence of alloying on the atomic structure and the optical characteristics of R u x F e 1 - x S 2 samples. Utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical characterizations, we observed a notable widening of the band gap of F e S 2 , ranging from 0.90508 to 1.38 eV, when approximately 1.06% of the Fe atoms were replaced with ruthenium atoms (x = 0.0106 concentration of Ru). This finding holds significant implications for the potential applications of our samples in photovoltaic technologies.

Characterization and stability investigation of rhein encapsulated microcapsules using different enteric biopolymers with pullulan and Jiuzao glutelin conjugates via Maillard reaction

The poor water solubility and rhein (RH) stability limit its application in the functional food industry. In the present study, the RH-loaded water-in-oil-in-water nano emulsion and microcapsules were prepared using the conjugates of pullulan-Jiuzao glutelin (JG) (m/m, 2:1, PJC-2) obtained by Maillard reaction and enteric-soluble materials (polymethlacrylic acid, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate, cellulose acetate phthalate, and D-mannitol). The effects of different formulations on the microstructure, physicochemical properties, and storage stability of microcapsules were analyzed. The results showed that microcapsules exhibited stability against different external environments. The encapsulation efficiency of RH in the four enteric-soluble-PJC-2 double-deck microcapsules (70.03 ± 3.24%-91.08 ± 4.78%) was significantly improved than PJC-2 ones (61.84 ± 0.47%). The antioxidant activity and stability of RH in the microcapsules were improved (ABTS, 49.7%-113.93%; DPPH, 40.85%-101.82%; FRA, 62.32%-126.42%; and FCA, 70.58%-147.20%) after in vitro simulated digestion and extreme environmental conditions compared to free RH. This work provides a microcapsule based on PJC-2 with enteric-soluble materials for insoluble functional ingredients to improve solubility, stability, and bioactivity in the food industry.

Preparation and Optical Properties of PVDF-CaFe2O4 Polymer Nanocomposite Films

In this work, a synthesis technique for highly homogeneous PVDF-CaFe₂O₄ polymer films direct from solution was developed. The structural characterizations were conducted using XRD, FTIR, and ESEM experimental techniques. The XRD characteristic peaks of CaFe₂O₄ nanoparticles revealed a polycrystalline structure. The average crystallite size for CaFe₂O₄ was calculated to be 17.0 nm. ESEM micrographs of PVDF nanocomposites containing 0.0, 0.25, 0.75, and 1.0 wt% of CaFe₂O₄ showed smooth surface topography. The direct E_dir and indirect E_ind band gap energies for the PVDF-CaFe₂O₄ nanocomposites were decreased with the additions of 0.0-1.0 wt% CaFe₂O₄. In addition, the refractive index (n₀) increased from 3.38 to 10.36, and energy gaps (E_g) decreased from 5.50 to 4.95 eV. The nonlinear refractive index (n₂) for the PVDF-CaFe₂O₄ nanocomposites was improved with the addition of CaFe₂O₄ nanoparticles, exceeding those reported in the literature for PVC, PVA, and PMMA nanocomposites. Therefore, the PVDF-CaFe₂O₄ nanocomposites are expected to take the lead in optoelectronic applications because of their unusual optical properties.

Synthesis of Planar-Type ZnO Powder in Non-Nano Scale Dimension and Its Application in Ultraviolet Protection Cosmetics

ZnO is one of the most widely used inorganic sunscreens, owing to its fine particle size and UV light shielding capability. However, powders at nanosizes can be toxic and cause adverse effects. The development of non-nanosized particles has been slow. The present work investigated synthesis methods of non-nanosized ZnO particles for ultraviolet protection application. By altering the starting material, KOH concentration, and input speed, the ZnO particles can be obtained in different forms, including needle type, planar type, and vertical wall type. Cosmetic samples were made by mixing different ratios of synthesized powders. The physical properties and the UV blockage efficacy of different samples were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size analyzer (PSA), and ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) spectrometer. The samples with 1:1 ratio of needle-type ZnO and vertical wall-type ZnO exhibited superior light blocking effect owing to improved dispersibility and prevention of particle agglomeration. The 1:1 mixed sample also complied with the European nanomaterials regulation due to the absence of nanosized particles. With superior UV protection in the UVA and UVB regions, the 1:1 mixed powder showed potential to be used as a main ingredient in UV protection cosmetics.

Induced defect and ZnO nano-flower formation by N, N, dimethylformamide solvent for natural sunlight responsive floating photocatalytic advanced oxidation process

The increasing disposal of dyes and face-mask propel to hunt for a solution to fight water pollution while assisting sustainability. This research overcomes the key challenges associated with implementing photocatalytic water treatment by using natural sunlight active photocatalyst, changing slurry system, eliminating the use of external triggering sources, and reusing face-mask fabric coated with ZnO to act as a floating photocatalyst. Unique morphological structures-cauliflower, hydrangea, and petals-likes are obtained with the variation in synthesis medium (Diethylene glycol (DEG), N, N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), H₂O) and methods (precipitation, solvothermal) which are found to be dependent on the solvent properties. With the use of DMF having a higher dielectric constant and formation of dimethyl amine via hydrolysis, it influences in forming petals and flower-like morphologies, unlike DEG solvent. The ZnO-coated face-mask fabric is used as the floating photocatalyst under natural sunlight observing comparable 91% degradation efficiency in 100 min with that of 99% efficiency in the UV light-illuminated slurry system. The formation of petals-like structures, defects from the liberation of DMF molecules from the ZnO surface by calcination, larger pore sizes and pore volumes provided a synergistic effect on enhancing the degradation efficiency in these cases.

Impact of Nd3+ Substitutions on the Structure and Magnetic Properties of Nanostructured SrFe12O19 Hexaferrite

In this study, SrFe_12-xNd_xO₁₉, where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, was prepared using high-energy ball milling. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Using the XRD results, a comparative analysis of crystallite sizes of the prepared powders was carried out by different methods (models) such as the Scherrer, Williamson-Hall (W-H), Halder-Wagner (H-W), and size-strain plot (SSP) method. All the studied methods prove that the average nanocrystallite size of the prepared samples increases by increasing the Nd concentration. The H-W and SSP methods are more accurate than the Scherer or W-H methods, suggesting that these methods are more suitable for analyzing the XRD spectra obtained in this study. The specific saturation magnetization (σ_s), the effective anisotropy constant (K_eff), the field of magnetocrystalline anisotropy (H_a), and the field of shape anisotropy (H_d) for SrFe_12-xNd_xO₁₉ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) powders were calculated. The coercivity (H_c) increases (about 9% at x = 0.4) with an increasing degree of substitution of Fe³⁺ by Nd^3+, which is one of the main parameters for manufacturing permanent magnets.
