Passive and active tracer dynamics in polymer solutions with isotropic-to-nematic phase transition

Preferential ordering of incommensurate-length guest particles in a smectic host

Using density functional theory, we study the preferential ordering of rod-like guest particles immersed in a smectic host fluid. Within a model of perfectly aligned rods and assuming that the guest particles do not perturb the smectic host fluid, simple excluded-volume arguments explain that guest particles that are comparable in length to the host particles order in phase with the smectic host density layering, whereas guest particles that are considerably shorter or longer order in antiphase. The corresponding free-energy minima are separated by energetic barriers on the order of the thermal energy kBT, suggesting that guest particles undergo hopping-type diffusion between adjacent smectic layers. Upon introducing a slight orientational mismatch between the guest particles and the perfectly aligned smectic host, an additional, smaller free-energy barrier emerges for a range of intermediate guest-to-host length ratios, which splits the free-energy minimum into two. Guest particles in this range occupy positions intermediate between in-phase ordering and in-antiphase ordering. Finally, we use Kramers' theory to identify slow, fast, and intermediate diffusive regimes for the guest particles as a function of their length. Our model is in qualitative agreement with experiment and simulation and provides an alternative, complementary explanation in terms of a free-energy landscape for the intermediate diffusive regime, which was previously hypothesized to result from temporary caging effects [M. Chiappini, E. Grelet, and M. Dijkstra, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 087801 (2020)]. We argue that our simple model of aligned rods captures the salient features of incommensurate-length guest particles in a smectic host if a slight orientational mismatch is introduced.

Conformation and dynamics of an active filament in crowded media

The structural and dynamical properties of active filamentous objects under macromolecular crowding have a great relevance in biology. By means of Brownian dynamics simulations, we perform a comparative study for the conformational change and diffusion dynamics of an active chain in pure solvents and in crowded media. Our result shows a robust compaction-to-swelling conformational change with the augment of the Péclet number. The presence of crowding facilitates self-trapping of monomers and, thus, reinforces the activity mediated compaction. In addition, the efficient collisions between the self-propelled monomers and crowders induce a coil-to-globulelike transition, indicated by a marked change of the Flory scaling exponent of the gyration radius. Moreover, the diffusion dynamics of the active chain in crowded solutions demonstrates activity-enhanced subdiffusion. The center of mass diffusion manifests rather new scaling relations with respect to both the chain length and Péclet number. The interplay of chain activity and medium crowding provides a new mechanism to understand the non-trivial properties of active filaments in complex environments.

Dynamics of a spherical self-propelled tracer in a polymeric medium: interplay of self-propulsion, stickiness, and crowding

We employ computer simulations to study the dynamics of a self-propelled spherical tracer particle in a viscoelastic medium, made of a long polymer chain. Here, the interplay between viscoelasticity, stickiness, and activity (self-propulsion) brings additional complexity to the tracer dynamics. Our simulations show that on increasing the stickiness of the tracer particle to the polymer beads, the dynamics of the tracer particle slows down as it gets stuck to the polymer chain and moves along with it. But with increasing self-propulsion velocity, the dynamics gets enhanced. In the case of increasing stickiness as well as activity, the non-Gaussian parameter (NGP) exhibits non-monotonic behavior, which also shows up in the re-scaled self part of the van-Hove function. Non-Gaussianity results owing to the enhanced binding events and the sticky motion of the tracer along with the chain with increasing stickiness. On the other hand, with increasing activity, initially non-Gaussianity increases as the tracer moves through the heterogeneous polymeric environment but for higher activity, the tracer escapes resulting in a negative NGP. For higher values of stickiness, the trapping time distributions of the passive tracer particle broaden and have long tails. On the other hand, for a given stickiness with increasing self-propulsion force, the trapping time distributions become narrower and have short tails. We believe that our current simulation study will be helpful in elucidating the complex motion of activity-driven probes in viscoelastic media.

Chemically symmetric and asymmetric self-driven rigid dumbbells in a 2D polymer gel

We employ computer simulations to unveil the translational and rotational dynamics of self-driven chemically symmetric and asymmetric rigid dumbbells in a two-dimensional polymer gel. Our results show that the activity or the self-propulsion always enhances the dynamics of the dumbbells. Making the self-propelled dumbbell chemically asymmetric leads to further enhancement in dynamics. Additionally, the direction of self-propulsion is a key factor for chemically asymmetric dumbbells, where self-propulsion towards the non-sticky half of the dumbbell results in faster translational and rotational dynamics compared to the case with the self-propulsion towards the sticky half of the dumbbell. Our analyses show that both the symmetric and asymmetric passive rigid dumbbells get trapped inside the mesh of the polymer gel, but the chemical asymmetry always facilitates the mesh to mesh motion of the dumbbell and it is even more pronounced when the dumbbell is self-propelled. This results in multiple peaks in the van Hove function with increasing self-propulsion. In a nutshell, we believe that our in silico study can guide researchers to design efficient artificial microswimmers possessing potential applications in site-specific delivery.
