CeO2-Based Frustrated Lewis Pairs via Defective Engineering: Formation Theory, Site Characterization, and Small Molecule Activation

Activation of small molecules is considered to be a central concern in the theoretical investigation of environment- and energy-related catalytic conversions. Sub-nanostructured frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been an emerging research hotspot in recent years due to their advantages in small molecule activation. Although the progress of catalytic applications of FLPs is increasingly reported, the fundamental theories related to the structural formation, site regulation, and catalytic mechanism of FLPs have not yet been fully developed. Given this, it is attempted to demonstrate the underlying theory of FLPs formation, corresponding regulation methods, and its activation mechanism on small molecules using CeO2 as the representative metal oxide. Specifically, this paper presents three fundamental principles for constructing FLPs on CeO2 surfaces, and feasible engineering methods for the regulation of FLPs sites are presented. Furthermore, cases where typical small molecules (e.g., hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane oxygen, etc.) are activated over FLPs are analyzed. Meanwhile, corresponding future challenges for the development of FLPs-centered theory are presented. The insights presented in this paper may contribute to the theories of FLPs, which can potentially provide inspiration for the development of broader environment- and energy-related catalysis involving small molecule activation.

Lessons Learned from Catalysis to Qubits: General Strategies to Build Accessible and Accurate First-Principles Models of Point Defects

Defects and dopants play critical roles in defining the properties of a material. Achieving a mechanistic understanding of how such properties arise is challenging with current experimental methods, and computational approaches suffer from significant modeling limitations that frequently require a posteriori fitting. Consequently, the pace of dopant discovery as a means of tuning material properties for a particular application has been slow. However, recent advances in computation have enabled researchers to move away from semiempirical schemes to reposition density functional theory as a predictive tool and improve the accessibility of highly accurate first-principles methods to all researchers. This Perspective discusses some of these recent achievements that provide more accurate first-principles geometric, thermodynamic, optical, and electronic properties simultaneously. Advancements related to supercells, basis sets, functionals, and optimization protocols, as well as suggestions for evaluating the quality of a computational model through comparison to experimental data, are discussed. Moreover, recent computational results in the fields of energy materials, heterogeneous catalysis, and quantum informatics are reviewed along with an evaluation of current frontiers and opportunities in the field of computational materials chemistry.

Frustrated Lewis Pairs: Bonding, Reactivity, and Applications

The outstanding capability of Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) catalysts to activate small molecules has gained significant attention in recent times. Reactivity of FLP is further extended toward the hydrogenation of various unsaturated species. Over the past decade, this unique catalysis concept has been successfully expanded to heterogeneous catalysis as well. The present review article gives a brief survey on several studies on this field. A thorough discussion on quantum chemical studies concerning the activation of H₂ is provided. The role of aromaticity and boron-ligand cooperation on the reactivity of FLP is discussed in the Review. How FLP can activate other small molecules by cooperative action of its Lewis centers is also discussed. Further, the discussion is shifted to the hydrogenation of various unsaturated species and the mechanism regarding this process. It also discusses the latest theoretical advancements in the application of FLP in heterogeneous catalysis across various domains, such as two-dimensional materials, functionalized surfaces, and metal oxides. A deeper understanding of the catalytic process may assist in devising new heterogeneous FLP catalysts through experimental design.

Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Heterogeneous Catalysis: Theoretical Insights

Frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalysts have attracted much recent interest because of their exceptional ability to activate small molecules in homogeneous catalysis. In the past ten years, this unique catalysis concept has been extended to heterogeneous catalysis, with much success. Herein, we review the recent theoretical advances in understanding FLP-based heterogeneous catalysis in several applications, including metal oxides, functionalized surfaces, and two-dimensional materials. A better understanding of the details of the catalytic mechanism can help in the experimental design of novel heterogeneous FLP catalysts.
