Effects of molecular size and orientation on the interfacial properties and wetting behavior of water/n-alkane systems: a molecular-dynamics study

Catalyst-free selective oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds in toluene on water

The anisotropic water interfaces provide an environment to drive various chemical reactions not seen in bulk solutions. However, catalytic reactions by the aqueous interfaces are still in their infancy, with the emphasis being on the reaction rate acceleration on water. Here, we report that the oil-water interface activates and oxidizes C(sp3)-H bonds in toluene, yielding benzaldehyde with high selectivity (>99%) and conversion (>99%) under mild, catalyst-free conditions. Collision at the interface between oil-dissolved toluene and hydroxyl radicals spontaneously generated near the water-side interfaces is responsible for the unexpectedly high selectivity. Protrusion of free OH groups from interfacial water destabilizes the transition state of the OH-addition by forming π-hydrogen bonds with toluene, while the H-abstraction remains unchanged to effectively activate C(sp3)-H bonds. Moreover, the exposed free OH groups form hydrogen bonds with the produced benzaldehyde, suppressing it from being overoxidized. Our investigation shows that the oil-water interface has considerable promise for chemoselective redox reactions on water without any catalysts.

Wettability behavior of DTMS modified SiO2: Experimental and molecular dynamics study

In this research, the wetting behavior of SiO2 modified with dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) was explored using both experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approaches. The experimental results reveal that DTMS can chemically bond to the SiO2 surface, and the contact angle (CA) reaches the maximum value of 157.7° when the mass of DTMS is twice that of SiO2. The different wetting behaviors caused by DTMS grafting were analyzed by CA fitting, ionic pairs, concentration distribution, molecule orientation, and interfacial interaction energy. The results demonstrate that a 25 % DTMS grafting rate resulted in a maximum CA of 158.2°, which is ascribed to the disruption of interfacial hydrogen bonding and changes in the hydration structure caused by DTMS grafting. Moreover, the above hydrophobic SiO2 model shows a slight decrease in CA as the water temperature increases, which is consistent with the experimental findings. In contrast, an opposite change was observed for the pristine SiO2 model. Although the higher water temperature enhances the diffusion capacity of water molecules in both models, the difference in interfacial interactions is responsible for the change in CA. We hope this finding will contribute to a deeper understanding of the wetting adjustment of SiO2.

Second inflection point of supercooled water surface tension induced by hydrogen bonds: A molecular-dynamics study

Surface tension of supercooled water is a fundamental property in various scientific processes. In this study, we perform molecular dynamics simulations with the TIP4P-2005 model to investigate the surface tension of supercooled water down to 220 K. Our results show a second inflection point (SIP) in the surface tension at temperature TSIP ≈ 267.5 ± 2.3 K. Using an extended IAPWS-E functional fit for the water surface tension, we calculate the surface excess internal-energy and entropy terms of the excess Helmholtz free energy. Similar to prior studies [Wang et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 21, 3360 (2019); Gorfer et al., J. Chem. Phys. 158, 054503 (2023)], our results show that the surface tension is governed by two driving forces: a surface excess entropy change above the SIP and a surface excess internal-energy change below it. We study hydrogen-bonding near the SIP because it is the main cause of water's anomalous properties. With decreasing temperature, our results show that the entropy contribution to the surface tension reaches a maximum slightly below the SIP and then decreases. This is because the number of hydrogen bonds increases more slowly below the SIP. Moreover, the strengths and lifetimes of the hydrogen bonds also rise dramatically below the SIP, causing the internal-energy term to dominate the excess surface free energy. Thus, the SIP in the surface tension of supercooled TIP4P-2005 water is associated with an increase in the strengths and lifetimes of hydrogen bonds, along with a decrease in the formation rate (#/K) of new hydrogen bonds.

Salinity-Driven Structural and Viscosity Modulation of Confined Polar Oil Phases by Carbonated Brine Films: Novel Insights from Molecular Dynamics

The structural and dynamic properties of fluids under confinement in a porous medium differ from their bulk properties. This study delves into the surface structuring and hydrodynamic characteristics of oil/thin film carbonated brine two-phase within a calcite channel upon salinity variation. To this end, both equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are utilized to unveil the effect of the carboxylic acid component (benzoic acid) in a simple model oil (decane) confined between two thin films of carbonated brine on the oil-brine-calcite characteristics. The salinity effect was scrutinized under four saline carbonated waters, deionized carbonated water (DCW), carbonated low-salinity brine (CLSB, 30,000 ppm), carbonated seawater (CSW, 60,000 ppm), and carbonated high-salinity brine (CHSB, 180,000 ppm). An electrical double layer (EDL) is observed at varying salinities, comprising a Stern-like positive layer (formed by Na+ ions) followed by a negative one (formed by Cl- ions primarily residing on top of the adsorbed sodium cations). By lowering the salinity, the Na+ ions cover the interface regions (brine-calcite and brine-oil), depleting within the brine bulk region. The lowest positive surface charge on the rock surface was found in salinity corresponding to seawater. Two distinct Na+ peaks at the oleic phase interface have been observed in the carbonated high-salinity brine system, enhancing the adsorption of polar molecules at the thin brine film interfaces. There is a pronounced EDL formation at the oleic phase interface in the case of CSW, resulting in a strong interface region containing ions and functional fractions. Likewise, the oil region confined by CSW exhibited the lowest apparent viscosity, attributed to the optimized salinity distribution and inclination of benzoic acid fractions uniformly at the brine-oil interface, acting as a slippery surface. Moreover, the results reveal that the presence of polar fractions could increase the oil phase's apparent viscosity, and introducing ions to this system reduces the polar molecules' destructive effect on the apparent viscosity of the oil region. Therefore, the fluidity of confined systems is modulated by both composition of the brine and oil phases.
