Large-Scale Synthesis of High Energy Thermal Battery Cathode Ni0.5Co0.5S2 by a Simple Sintering Technique

With the synergies of multiple elements, bimetallic sulfides exhibit excellent performance as splendid electrode materials and effective catalysts. However, large-scale synthesis of high-performance single-phase multicomponent sulfides has always been a challenge. Based on thermodynamic calculations, the intermediate phases NiS2 and Co3S4 are devoted to the synthesis of single-phase Ni0.5Co0.5S2. Because the reaction from NiS2 and Co3S4 to Ni0.5Co0.5S2 goes through a lower energy, it thermodynamically contributes to achieving a single-phase structure. Thus, single-phase Ni0.5Co0.5S2 can be simply and quickly prepared by two-step sintering and successfully scalable for mass production. This technique can extend to the whole ingredients Ni1-xCoxS2. Ni0.5Co0.5S2 demonstrates excellent thermal stability and good conductivity. It delivers a specific capacity of 671 mAh·g-1 and a specific energy of 1173 Wh·kg-1 when applied to a thermal battery cathode, which are increased by 18.6% and 25.0%, respectively, compared to pristine NiS2 (566 mAh·g-1) and CoS2 (537 mAh·g-1). This work proposes an innovative sintering method, which is applicable for cost-efficient and large-scale synthesis of single-phase multicomponent sulfides.

Accelerating the Search for New Solid Electrolytes: Exploring Vast Chemical Space with Machine Learning-Enabled Computational Calculations

Discovering new solid electrolytes (SEs) is essential to achieving higher safety and better energy density for all-solid-state lithium batteries. In this work, we report machine learning (ML)-assisted high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) results to identify new SE materials. This approach expands the chemical space to explore by substituting elements of prototype structures and accelerates an evaluation of properties by applying various ML models. The screening results in a few candidate materials, which are validated by density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The shortlisted oxysulfide materials satisfy key properties to be successful SEs. The advanced screening method presented in this work will accelerate the discovery of energy materials for related applications.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride-Induced Multifold Enhancement in Electrochemical Charge Storage of CoS-NiCo2S4 for All-Solid-State Hybrid Supercapacitors

In order to improve the electro-microstructural physiognomics of electrode materials for applications in better efficiency supercapacitors, herein graphitic carbon nitride (GCN)-heterostructurized CoS-NiCo₂S₄ is designed using a controlled material growth synthesis procedure. The developed CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN possesses ample hydrophilicity, possible charge transfer between GCN and CoS-NiCo₂S₄, uniform phase distribution, and distinctive microstructural characteristics. The preliminary electrochemical studies in the three-electrode setup show GCN-induced lower charge transfer resistance and very unique Warburg profile corresponding to extremely low diffusion resistance in CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN as compared to pristine CoS-NiCo₂S₄. Furthermore, GCN is found to significantly induce surface-controlled (capacitive-type) charge storage and frequency-independent specific capacitance up to 10 Hz in CoS-NiCo₂S₄. Furthermore, the CoS-NiCo₂S₄||N-rGO and CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN||N-rGO all-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (ASSHSC) devices were fabricated using N-rGO as the negative electrode material, and the inducing effect of GCN on the supercapacitive charge storage performance of the devices is thoroughly studied. Results demonstrate that the mass specific capacitance and areal capacitance of CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN||N-rGO are ∼2 and ∼4 times more than those of the CoS-NiCo₂S₄||N-rGO ASSHSC device, respectively. Furthermore, the CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN||N-rGO offers more energy density, rate energy density, and additional charge-discharge durability (over ∼10,000 cycles) than the CoS-NiCo₂S₄||N-rGO ASSHSC device. The multifold performance improvement of CoS-NiCo₂S₄ with GCN heterostructurization is ascribed to GCN-induced supplemented porosity and pore widening, ionic nonstoichiometry (Ni^2±δ, Co^2±δ, and Co^3±δ), wettability, integrated enhancement in the conductivity, and electroactive-ion accessibility in the CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN heterocomposite. The present study offers vital physicoelectrochemical insights toward the future development of low cost and high-performance electrode materials, and their implementation in high-rate and operationally stable all-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor devices, for application in the next-generation front-line technologies.
