Emerging investigator series: contributions of reactive nitrogen species to transformations of organic compounds in water: a critical review

Dissolved Organic Matter-Mediated Photosensitized Activation of Monochloramine for Micropollutant Abatement in Wastewater Effluent

Utilizing solar light and water matrix components in situ to reduce the chemical and energy demands would make treatment technologies more sustainable for micropollutant abatement in wastewater effluents. We herein propose a new strategy for micropollutant abatement through dissolved organic matter (DOM)-mediated photosensitized activation of monochloramine (NH2Cl). Exposing the chlorinated wastewater effluent with residual NH2Cl to solar irradiation (solar/DOM/NH2Cl process) degrades six structurally diverse micropollutants at rate constants 1.26-34.2 times of those by the solar photolysis of the dechlorinated effluent (solar/DOM process). Notably, among the six micropollutants, the degradation rate constants of estradiol, acetaminophen, bisphenol A, and atenolol by the solar/DOM/NH2Cl process are 1.13-4.32 times the summation of those by the solar/DOM and solar/NH2Cl processes. The synergism in micropollutant degradation is attributed to the generation of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and hydroxyl radicals (HO·) from the photosensitized activation of NH2Cl. Triplet state-excited DOM (3DOM*) dominates the activation of NH2Cl, leading to the generation of RNS, while HO· is produced from the interactions between RNS and other photochemically produced reactive intermediates (e.g., O2·- and DOM·+/·-). The findings advance the knowledge of DOM-mediated photosensitization and offer a sustainable method for micropollutant abatement in wastewater effluents containing residual NH2Cl.

Advanced oxidation processes for water and wastewater treatment - Guidance for systematic future research

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a growing research field with a large variety of different process variants and materials being tested at laboratory scale. However, despite extensive research in recent years and decades, many variants have not been transitioned to pilot- and full-scale operation. One major concern are the inconsistent experimental approaches applied across different studies that impede identification, comparison, and upscaling of the most promising AOPs. The aim of this tutorial review is to streamline future studies on the development of new solutions and materials for advanced oxidation by providing guidance for comparable and scalable oxidation experiments. We discuss recent developments in catalytic, ozone-based, radiation-driven, and other AOPs, and outline future perspectives and research needs. Since standardized experimental procedures are not available for most AOPs, we propose basic rules and key parameters for lab-scale evaluation of new AOPs including selection of suitable probe compounds and scavengers for the measurement of (major) reactive species. A two-phase approach to assess new AOP concepts is proposed, consisting of (i) basic research and proof-of-concept (technology readiness levels (TRL) 1-3), followed by (ii) process development in the intended water matrix including a cost comparison with an established process, applying comparable and scalable parameters such as UV fluence or ozone consumption (TRL 3-5). Subsequent demonstration of the new process (TRL 6-7) is briefly discussed, too. Finally, we highlight important research tools for a thorough mechanistic process evaluation and risk assessment including screening for transformation products that should be based on chemical logic and combined with complementary tools (mass balance, chemical calculations).

Far-UVC Photolysis of Peroxydisulfate for Micropollutant Degradation in Water

Increasing radical yields to reduce UV fluence requirement for achieving targeted removal of micropollutants in water would make UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) less energy demanding in the context of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and carbon neutrality. We herein demonstrate that, by switching the UV radiation source from conventional low-pressure UV at 254 nm (UV254) to emerging Far-UVC at 222 nm (UV222), the fluence-based concentration of HO• in the UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) AOP increases by 6.40, 2.89, and 6.00 times in deionized water, tap water, and surface water, respectively, with increases in the fluence-based concentration of SO4•- also by 5.06, 5.81, and 55.47 times, respectively. The enhancement to radical generation is confirmed using a kinetic model. The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constants of 16 micropollutants by the UV222/PDS AOP in surface water are predicted to be 1.94-13.71 times higher than those by the UV254/PDS AOP. Among the tested water matrix components, chloride and nitrate decrease SO4•- but increase HO• concentration in the UV222/PDS AOP. Compared to the UV254/PDS AOP, the UV222/PDS AOP decreases the formation potentials of carbonaceous disinfection byproducts (DBPs) but increases the formation potentials of nitrogenous DBPs.

Accelerated Ultraviolet Treatment of Carbamazepine and NDMA in Water under 222 nm Irradiation

Krypton chloride (KrCl*) excimer ultraviolet (UV) light may provide advantages for contaminant degradation compared to conventional low-pressure (LP) UV. Direct and indirect photolysis as well as UV/hydrogen peroxide-driven advanced oxidation (AOP) of two chemical contaminants were investigated in laboratory grade water (LGW) and treated secondary effluent (SE) for LPUV and filtered KrCl* excimer lamps emitting at 254 and 222 nm, respectively. Carbamazepine (CBZ) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) were chosen because of their unique molar absorption coefficient profiles, quantum yields (QYs) at 254 nm, and reaction rate constants with hydroxyl radical. Quantum yields and molar absorption coefficients at 222 nm for both CBZ and NDMA were determined, with measured molar absorption coefficients of 26 422 and 8170 M-1 cm-1, respectively, and QYs of 1.95 × 10-2 and 6.68 × 10-1 mol Einstein-1, respectively. The 222 nm irradiation of CBZ in SE improved degradation compared to that in LGW, likely through promotion of in situ radical formation. AOP conditions improved degradation of CBZ in LGW for both UV LP and KrCl* sources but did not improve NDMA decay. In SE, photolysis of CBZ resulted in decay similar to that of AOP, likely due to the in situ generation of radicals. Overall, the KrCl* 222 nm source significantly improves contaminant degradation compared to that of 254 nm LPUV.

A Model Assessment of the Occurrence and Reactivity of the Nitrating/Nitrosating Agent Nitrogen Dioxide (•NO2) in Sunlit Natural Waters

Nitrogen dioxide (•NO2) is produced in sunlit natural surface waters by the direct photolysis of nitrate, together with •OH, and upon the oxidation of nitrite by •OH itself. •NO2 is mainly scavenged by dissolved organic matter, and here, it is shown that •NO2 levels in sunlit surface waters are enhanced by high concentrations of nitrate and nitrite, and depressed by high values of the dissolved organic carbon. The dimer of nitrogen dioxide (N2O4) is also formed in the pathway of •NO2 hydrolysis, but with a very low concentration, i.e., several orders of magnitude below •NO2, and even below •OH. Therefore, at most, N2O4 would only be involved in the transformation (nitration/nitrosation) of electron-poor compounds, which would not react with •NO2. Although it is known that nitrite oxidation by CO3•− in high-alkalinity surface waters gives a minor-to-negligible contribution to •NO2 formation, it is shown here that NO2− oxidation by Br2•− can be a significant source of •NO2 in saline waters (saltwater, brackish waters, seawater, and brines), which offsets the scavenging of •OH by bromide. As an example, the anti-oxidant tripeptide glutathione undergoes nitrosation by •NO2 preferentially in saltwater, thanks to the inhibition of the degradation of glutathione itself by •OH, which is scavenged by bromide in saltwater. The enhancement of •NO2 reactions in saltwater could explain the literature findings, that several phenolic nitroderivatives are formed in shallow (i.e., thoroughly sunlit) and brackish lagoons in the Rhône river delta (S. France), and that the laboratory irradiation of phenol-spiked seawater yields nitrophenols in a significant amount.
