A perspective on developing solid-phase extraction technologies for industrial-scale critical materials recovery

A review on the thermochemical treatments of biomass: Implications for hydrochar production and rare earth element recovery from hyperaccumulators

Phytomining is a promising method that employs hyperaccumulators to concentrate metals from various substrates. Many studies on phytomining have been reported in the literature, while how to recover metals from hyperaccumulators has not been well resolved, which is critical for developing a complete phytomining-based metal recovery process. The most straightforward approach is to combust hyperaccumulators and recover metals from the combustion residue. However, the combustion process results in significant waste and carbon emissions. In contrast to combustion, thermochemical treatments can convert the biomass of hyperaccumulators to valuable products, such as biochar, hydrochar, biocrudes, and biogas. Therefore, it is more sustainable to develop a process that combines thermochemical treatments for metal recovery from hyperaccumulators. To achieve this objective, a systematic and comprehensive understanding of product characteristics and metal fate during thermochemical processing is required. In this article, three emerging thermochemical technologies, i.e., microwave-assisted pyrolysis, hydrothermal processing, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment, are systematically reviewed in terms of conversion mechanisms, merits, demerits, product characteristics, and metal fate. Significant findings reported in the literature on the effects of operating parameters on product characteristics and metal fate during thermochemical treatment of waste biomass, especially those from hyperaccumulators, were summarized. Due to limited studies on thermochemical treatments of rare earth element hyperaccumulators, this review is expanded to include hyperaccumulators of any metal species. Based on comparisons among the three emerging thermochemical treatment technologies, microwave-assisted hydrothermal pyrolysis is identified as the most promising approach that favors carbon product obtainment and REE recovery from hyperaccumulators.

Powdered Hierarchically Porous Silica Monoliths for the Selective Extraction of Scandium

Scandium (Sc) is a high value Critical Material that is most commonly used in advanced alloys. Due to current and potential supply limitations, there has been an international effort to find new and improved ways to extract Sc from existing and novel resources. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is one promising approach for Sc recovery, particularly for use with low-grade feedstocks. Here, unfunctionalized, powdered hierarchically porous silica monoliths from DPS Inc. (DPS) are used for Sc extraction in batch and semicontinuous flow systems at model conditions. The sorbent exhibits excellent mass transfer properties, much like the whole monoliths, which should permit Sc to be rapidly recovered from large volumes of feedstock. The Sc adsorption capacity of the material is ∼142.7 mg/g at pH 6, dropping to ∼12.0 mg/g at pH 3, and adsorption is furthermore highly selective for Sc compared with the other rare earth elements (REEs). Under semicontinuous flow conditions, recovery efficiency is limited by a kinetic process. The primary mechanism responsible for the system's slow approach to equilibrium is the Sc adsorption reaction kinetics rather than inter- or intraparticle diffusion. Overall, this unmodified hierarchically porous silica powder from DPS shows great promise for the selective extraction of Sc from various feedstocks.

Development and validation of an improved QuEChERS method for the extraction of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) from complex soils

In order to achieve rapid, sensitive, and high-throughput determination of typical semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in soil samples, a method for the rapid determination of 63 SVOCs in soil was developed by optimizing and improving the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) extraction technique in conjunction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. A small amount of soil sample (5.0 g) was vortexed with 10 mL of a mixture of acetone and n-hexane (V/V = 1 : 1) for 2 min, followed by rapid vortex purification and centrifugation using a mixture of copper powder and octadecylsilane (C18) dispersant. The resulting supernatant was then purified through a 0.22 μm filter membrane. The results showed that the 63 SVOCs exhibited good linear relationships within the concentration range of 100-5000 μg L-1, with correlation coefficients (R2) above 0.99. The method detection limit (MDL = 3.3 Sy/m) was lower than 0.050 mg kg-1. At a spike concentration of 1 mg kg-1, the recovery rates of the 63 SVOCs were almost above 70% (n = 7). Compared with the rapid solvent extraction (ASE) method specified in US EPA 3545 standard, this method reduced the organic solvent usage by 14 times and significantly shortened the operation time. Furthermore, this method did not involve any transfer or concentration steps of the extractant during the experimental process, reducing the exposure time of toxic compounds and providing support for the principles of green analytical chemistry. Moreover, in the detection of most compounds in the same batch of contaminated soil, the extraction results obtained by QuEChERS were superior to those obtained by the ASE method, providing evidence for the practical application of this method. This method is rapid, simple, accurate, requires a small sample volume, and causes minimal environmental pollution. It provides a high-throughput detection method for the rapid screening of SVOCs in soil.

Thorium Removal, Recovery and Recycling: A Membrane Challenge for Urban Mining

Although only a slightly radioactive element, thorium is considered extremely toxic because its various species, which reach the environment, can constitute an important problem for the health of the population. The present paper aims to expand the possibilities of using membrane processes in the removal, recovery and recycling of thorium from industrial residues reaching municipal waste-processing platforms. The paper includes a short introduction on the interest shown in this element, a weak radioactive metal, followed by highlighting some common (domestic) uses. In a distinct but concise section, the bio-medical impact of thorium is presented. The classic technologies for obtaining thorium are concentrated in a single schema, and the speciation of thorium is presented with an emphasis on the formation of hydroxo-complexes and complexes with common organic reagents. The determination of thorium is highlighted on the basis of its radioactivity, but especially through methods that call for extraction followed by an established electrochemical, spectral or chromatographic method. Membrane processes are presented based on the electrochemical potential difference, including barro-membrane processes, electrodialysis, liquid membranes and hybrid processes. A separate sub-chapter is devoted to proposals and recommendations for the use of membranes in order to achieve some progress in urban mining for the valorization of thorium.

The Most Potent Natural Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics, and Food Ingredients Isolated from Plants with Deep Eutectic Solvents

There is growing interest in reducing the number of synthetic products or additives and replacing them with natural ones. The pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries are especially focused on natural and bioactive chemicals isolated from plants or microorganisms. The main challenge here is to develop efficient and ecological methods for their isolation. According to the strategies and rules of sustainable development and green chemistry, green solvents and environmentally friendly technologies must be used. The application of deep eutectic solvents as efficient and biodegradable solvents seems to be a promising alternative to traditional methods. They are classified as being green and ecological but, most importantly, very efficient extraction media compared to organic solvents. The aim of this review is to present the recent findings on green extraction, as well as the biological activities and the possible applications of natural plant ingredients, namely, phenolics, flavonoids, terpenes, saponins, and some others. This paper thoroughly reviews modern, ecological, and efficient extraction methods with the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The newest findings, as well as the factors influencing the efficiency of extraction, such as water content, and hydrogen bond donor and acceptor types, as well as the extraction systems, are also discussed. New solutions to the major problem of separating DESs from the extract and for solvent recycling are also presented.

Solid-phase immunoextraction followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the selective determination of thyroxine in human serum

In this work, an analytical method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis (LC-MS/MS) has been developed for the selective determination of thyroxine (T4) in human serum. For this purpose, two immunosorbents (ISs) specific to T4 were synthesized by grafting two different T4-specific monoclonal antibodies on a cyanogen bromide (CNBr)-activated-Sepharose® 4B solid support. The grafting yields obtained from the immobilization of each antibody on the CNBr-activated-Sepharose® 4B were over 90%, demonstrating that most of the antibodies were covalently bound to the solid support. The SPE procedure was optimized by studying the retention capability and selectivity of the two ISs in pure media fortified with T4. Under the optimized conditions, high elution efficiencies were achieved in the elution fraction for both specific ISs (i.e., 85%), whereas low ones were obtained in the control ISs (ca. 2%), showing the selectivity of the specific ISs. The ISs were also characterized by studying extraction and synthesis repeatability (RSD <8%), and capacity (104 ng of T4 per 35 mg of ISs, i.e., 3 μg g^-1). Finally, the methodology was applied to a pooled human serum sample in order to study its analytical utility and accuracy. Relative recovery (RR) values between 81 and 107% were obtained, showing no matrix effects during the global methodology. Furthermore, the need to perform the immunoextraction was evidenced by comparing the LC-MS scan chromatograms and RR values with and without applying the immunoextraction procedure on a serum sample submitted to protein precipitation. This works exploits, for the first time, the use of an IS on the selective determination of T4 in human serum samples.

Application of Poly(caffeic acid) for the Extraction of Critical Rare Earth Elements

Poly(caffeic acid) was synthesized and utilized for the extraction and determination of rare earth elements (REEs), thorium, and uranium. Oxidative polymerization of caffeic acid, a low-cost plant-based material, in the presence of ethylenediamine produced a granular, air-stable, and cross-linked polymer. The polymer is highly oxygenated and together with the amino group from ethylenediamine efficiently coordinates and preconcentrates these critical elements from aqueous media. Extraction was dependent on solution pH, amount of sorbent, and extraction time, while the concentration and flow rate of the desorption solution governed the recovery efficiency. Removal and recovery efficiencies greater than 98 and 90%, respectively, and low levels of detection ranging from 0.1 to 2.9 ng/L were achieved. Determination of these strategic elements in the presence of potentially interfering ions as well as in complex matrices such as well water and produced water samples also was demonstrated. The capacity of poly(caffeic acid) was determined with lanthanum as a representative REE to be 161.7 mg/g, establishing the promise of poly(caffeic acid) for larger-scale extractions in addition to the ability to screen sources for the presence of REEs.

Porous Polymers Based on 9,10-Bis(methacryloyloxymethyl)anthracene-Towards Synthesis and Characterization

Porous materials can be found in numerous essential applications. They are of particular interest when, in addition to their porosity, they have other advantageous properties such as thermal stability or chemical diversity. The main aim of this study was to synthesize the porous copolymers of 9,10-bis(methacryloyloxymethyl)anthracene (BMA) with three different co-monomers divinylbenzene (DVB), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and trimethylpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM). They were synthesized via suspension polymerization using chlorobenzene and toluene served as porogenic solvents. For the characterization of the synthesized copolymers ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, a low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption method, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, inverse gas chromatography and size distribution analysis were successfully employed. It was found that depending on the used co-monomer and the type of porogen regular polymeric microspheres with a specific surface area in the range of 134-472 m²/g can be effectively synthesized. The presence of miscellaneous functional groups promotes divergent types of interactions Moreover, all of the copolymers show a good thermal stability up to 307 °C. What is important, thanks to application of anthracene derivatives as the functional monomer, the synthesized materials show fluorescence under UV radiation. The obtained microspheres can be used in various adsorption techniques as well as precursor for thermally resistant fluorescent sensors.

Highly Tunable 4-Phosphoryl Pyrazolone Receptors for Selective Rare-Earth Separation

Highly selective rare-earth separation has become increasingly important due to the indispensable role of these elements in various cutting-edge technologies including clean energy. However, the similar physicochemical properties of rare-earth elements (REEs) render their separation very challenging, and the development of new selective receptors for these elements is potentially of very considerable economic and environmental importance. Herein, we report the development of a series of 4-phosphoryl pyrazolone receptors for the selective separation of trivalent lanthanum, europium, and ytterbium as the representatives of light, middle, and heavy REEs, respectively. X-ray crystallography studies were employed to obtain solid-state structures across 11 of the resulting complexes, allowing comparative structure-function relationships to be probed, including the effect of lanthanide contraction that occurs along the series from lanthanum to europium to ytterbium and which potentially provides a basis for REE ion separation. In addition, the influence of ligand structure and lipophilicity on lanthanide binding and selectivity was systematically investigated via n-octanol/water distribution and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) studies. Corresponding stoichiometry relationships between solid and solution states were well established using slope analyses. The results provide new insights into some fundamental lanthanide coordination chemistry from a separation perspective and establish 4-phosphoryl pyrazolone derivatives as potential practical extraction reagents for the selective separation of REEs in the future.

Development of Micro-Column Preconcentration Method Using a Restricted-Access Poly(protoporphyrin-co-vinyl pyridine) Adsorbent for Copper Determination in Water and Milk Samples by FIA-FAAS

For years, researchers have focused on the determination of metal ions at trace levels in environmental and food samples using analytical methods that employ techniques with low cost acquisition and maintenance and without microwave-assisted acid digestion procedures or aggressive reagents. Therefore, the present study deals with the synthesis and application of a novel, restricted-access poly(protoporphyrin-co-vinyl pyridine) adsorbent to preconcentrate copper in water samples and bovine milk that have only been subjected to pH adjusting (pH 6.0) and filtration using posterior on-line determination by FAAS. Regarding macromolecules, the restricted-access property of the adsorbent was achieved using the hydrophilic compound 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). This method is based on the preconcentration of Cu2+ ions using a flow-injection system which is buffered with 0.05 mol L−1 of Britton–Robinson (BR) at a pH of 6.0 and has a flow rate of 14.0 mL min−1 through a mini-column packed with 50.0 mg of adsorbent. The elution was carried out using 0.40 mol L−1 of HCl toward the FAAS detector. The developed method provided a preconcentration factor of 44.7-fold, low limits of detection (LOD) (0.90 µg L−1) and quantification (LOQ) (2.90 µg L−1), tolerance to interfering ions (95.0 and 103.0%), and intra-day and inter-day precision assessed as the RSD (percentage of relative standard deviation), which ranged from 3.08 to 4.80%. The restricted-access poly(protoporphyrin-co-vinyl pyridine) adsorbent demonstrated outstanding features to exclude macromolecules, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and humic acid (HA) from an aqueous medium. Lake water and bovine milk samples were analyzed by the proposed preconcentration method with minimal sample pretreatment (which was based mainly on pH adjusting and filtration using an analytical curve with external calibration), yielding recovery values from addition and recovery tests ranging from 91.7 to 101.9%. The developed method shows great advantages over previously published methods, avoiding the time-consuming use of concentrated acids in a microwave-assisted acid digestion procedure.

Coordination Chemistry-Driven Approaches to Rare Earth Element Separations

Current projections for global mining indicate that unsustainable practices will cause supply problems for many elements, called critical raw materials, in the next 20 years. These include elements necessary for renewable technologies as well as artisanal sources. Energy critical elements (ECEs) comprise a group used for clean, renewable energy applications that are in low abundance in the Earth's crust or require an economic premium to extract from ores. Sustainable practices of acquiring ECEs is an important problem to address through fundamental research to provide alternative energy technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles at cheaper costs for our global energy generation and usage. Some of these green technologies incorporate rare-earth (RE) metals (Sc, Y and the lanthanides), which are challenging to separate from mineral sources because of their similar sizes (i.e., ionic radii) and chemical properties. The current process used to provide REs at requisite purities for these applications is counter-current solvent-solvent extraction, which is scalable and works efficiently for any ore composition. However, this method produces large amounts of caustic waste that is environmentally damaging, especially to areas in China that house major separation facilities. Advancement of the selectivity of this process is challenging since exact molecular speciation that affords separations is still relatively unknown. In this context, we developed a program to investigate new RE separations systems that were aimed at minimizing solvent use, controlled by molecular speciation, and could be targeted at problems in recycling these critical metals.The first ligand system that was developed to impart solubility differences between light and heavy rare-earth ions was [{(2-^tBuNO)C₆H₄CH₂}₃N]^3- (TriNOx^3-) (graphic below). A differential solubility allowed for a separation of Nd and Dy of SF_Nd:Dy = ∼300 in a single step. In other words, a 50:50 Nd/Dy sample was enriched to give 95% pure Nd and Dy through a simple filtration, which is potentially impactful to recycling magnetic materials found in wind turbines. This separations system compares favorably to other state-of-the-art molecular extractants that are based on energetic differences of the thermodynamic parameter to affect separations for neighboring elements. This straightforward, thermodynamically driven method to separate REs primed our future research for new coordination chemistry approaches to separations.Another separations system was accomplished through the variable rate of a redox event from one arm of the TriNOx^3- ligand. It was determined that the rate of this one electron oxidation, which operated through an electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical mechanism, was dependent on the identity of the RE ion. This kinetically driven separation afforded a separation factor (SF) of SF_Eu:Y = 75. We have also described other transformations such as ligand exchange, substituent dependent, and redox-driven chelation processes with well-defined speciation to afford purified RE materials. Recently, we determined that magnetic properties can be used to enhance both thermodynamic and kinetic RE separations processes to give an approximately 100% boost for pairs of paramagnetic/diamagnetic REs. These results have shown that both thermodynamic and kinetic RE separations were efficient for different selected RE binary pairs through coordination chemistry. The focus of this Account will detail the differences that are observed for RE separations when promoted by thermodynamic or kinetic factors. Overall, the development of rationally adjusted speciation of REs provides a basis for future industrial separations processes for technologies applied to ECEs derived from wind turbines, batteries for electric vehicles, and LEDs.

Valorization of Spent Sugarcane Fermentation Broth as a Source of Phenolic Compounds

A methodology based on a solid phase extraction (SPE) was optimized for the recovery of phenolic compounds from the spent fermentation broth generated from Biofene® (trans-β-farnesene) production. For this purpose, two resins (XAD-2 and HP-20) and three desorption solutions (water, 50/50 ethanol/water, and ethanol) were tested. The most efficient resin revealed to be the HP-20, using ethanol as desorption solution, reaching an overall total phenolic compound recovery of ca. 80% when 6 BV (bed volume) of both feed and ethanol were applied. The optimization of the resin’s process cycle pointed to 15 BV feed to be treated per cycle and using the same volume of ethanol in the desorption step, with no need for an extra resin regeneration step, stably yielding 48% total phenolic compound recovery from the spent broth for at least 4 cycles, translating into 60 BV of feed being treated per BV of resin, and with the resin being still perfectly active. The extract was characterized using LC−ESI−UHR−QqTOF−MS, and a total of 82 and 15 compounds were identified, in negative and positive ionization modes, respectively. Organic acids were the main class of compounds identified in the phenolic-rich extract, followed by phenolic compounds, saccharides, peptides or amino acids and vitamins. Additionally, the extract revealed a significant antioxidant capacity (914.1 ± 51.6 and 2764.5 ± 142.8 µmol Trolox equivalents/g-dw, respectively, with ABTS and ORAC methodologies), which might be interesting for a wide variety of applications.
