Precise size-control and functionalization of gold nanoparticles synthesized by plasma-liquid interactions: using carboxylic, amino, and thiol ligands

A Comprehensive Review on the Importance of Sustainable Synthesized Coinage Metal Nanomaterials and Their Diverse Biomedical Applications

From a historical perspective, coinage metals (CMNMs) are most renowned for their monetary, ornamental, and metallurgical merits; nevertheless, as nanotechnology's potential has only just come to light, their metal nanostructures and uses may be viewed as products of modern science. Notable characteristics of CMNMs include visual, electrical, chemical, and catalytic qualities that depend on shape and size. Due diligence on the creation and synthesis of CMNMs and their possible uses has been greatly promoted by these characteristics. This review focuses on solution-based methods and provides an overview of the latest developments in CMNMs and their bimetallic nanostructures. It discusses a range of synthetic techniques, including conventional procedures and more modern approaches used to enhance functionality by successfully manipulating the CMNMs nanostructure's size, shape, and composition. To help with the design of new nanostructures with improved capabilities in the future, this study offers a brief assessment of the difficulties and potential future directions of these intriguing metal nanostructures. This review focuses on mechanisms and factors influencing the synthesis process, green synthesis, and sustainable synthesis methods. It also discusses the wide range of biological domains in which CMNMs are applied, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer. Researchers will therefore find the appropriateness of both synthesizing and using CMNMS keeping in mind the different levels of environmental effects.

Agglomeration compaction promotes corrosion of gold nanoparticles

Engineered nanoparticles are increasingly being used in various areas of human activity. However, the degradation mechanism of nanobodies in harsh environments is still a puzzle for theory and experiment. We report here the results of optical spectroscopy and nanoparticle tracking analysis, quantifying agglomeration and sizing of 50 nm citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in HCl solutions containing H2O2. The mechanism of a consecutive corrosion reaction of GNPs is discussed within the framework of the near-field approach. We found that the disappearance of single nanoparticles from a suspension does not occur due to their dissolution per se, but is a consequence of the formation of aggregates. The neutralization of electrostatic shielding at high ionic strength allows gold nanoparticles to approach the subnanometer distance within the region of capping defects, at which the Casimir and van der Waals attractive forces dominate. It is suggested that electric field fluctuations in the confined space between highly conductive gold nanoparticles cause complexant-stimulated loss of metal from the core in the contact area. Going beyond the charge screening limitations by constraining the reaction space and reducing the double electrical layer thickness allows for chemical processes flow along otherwise not accessible reaction pathways.

Silver Nanoparticle-Functionalized Postsynthetically Modified Thiol MOF UiO-66-NH-SH for Efficient CO2 Fixation

Thiols are essential functional groups imparting unique properties, such as reactivity and selectivity, to many vital enzymes and biomolecules. The integration of electronically soft thiol groups within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) yields elevated reactivity and a pronounced affinity for soft metal ions. However, the scarcity of thiol-based ligands and synthetic challenges hinder the advancement of thiol-based MOFs. To bypass the difficulties of synthesizing thiol MOFs by a direct reaction between thiol-based ligands and corresponding metal salts, postsynthetic modification (PSM) of MOFs is an efficient strategy to introduce thiol functionality. Herein, we have introduced Ag nanoparticles in postsynthetically modified thiol MOFs UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and thioglycolic acid) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and 3-mercaptopropionic acid) to synthesize a series of heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 fixation. Catalysts Cat 1-2 and Cat 3 - 4 were synthesized from UiO-66-NH-SH (1) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2), respectively, by using varying concentrations of silver (AgNO3). Catalyst Ag@UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (Ag = 3.45%; namely Cat 2) shows the highest efficiency for the catalytic conversion of propargylic alcohol and terminal epoxide to the corresponding cyclic carbonates. Finally, a rationalized reaction mechanism is proposed by correlating our results with the current literature. This work presents a viable strategy to utilize the thiol functionality of MOFs (avoiding the complexities associated with synthesizing thiol MOFs directly from thiol ligands) as a platform for introducing catalytically active metal centers and applying them as a heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 fixation reactions.
