Wireless antenna sensor with CuO@Cu-vertical graphene and cysteine-PDMS composite for ethanol gas detection

BACKGROUND

Ethanol gas sensors are widely used in driving safety, security, and clinical respiratory monitoring applications. However, most ethanol sensors are large and exhibit poor stability owing to their integrated controller and high-temperature operation. Moreover, the development of wireless controller-free room-temperature ethanol sensors with long-term reliability is challenging.

RESULTS

In this study, a wireless room-temperature ethanol gas antenna sensor was developed by combining a Cu radiation electrode with vertical graphene (VG) embedded with CuO@Cu nanoparticles and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dielectric substrate filled with cysteine (Cys). In the patch-antenna sensor, changes in the ethanol gas concentration resulted in frequency shift differences in the generation and transmission processes of the synchronized sensing signal. The VG-Cu/Cys-PDMS ethanol gas sensor had a detection range of 50-2100 ppm and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.112 ppm, with a response/recovery time of only 20/21 s for 1200 ppm ethanol, thus demonstrating superior long-term stability and satisfactory humidity tolerance. Therefore, the synergistic sensitization mechanism between the VG sensing/radiation layer and Cys-PDMS substrate was investigated.

SIGNIFICANCE

This approach effectively addresses the issues of low-temperature operation, miniaturization, and long-term reliability. The proposed patch-antenna gas sensor is suitable for large-scale production owing to its use of industrial chemical vapor deposition technology and could be used to develop Internet-of-Things gas sensor nodes owing to its wireless propagation of electromagnetic waves with sensing information.

Green synthesis of ZnO-TiO2/RGO nanocomposites using Senna surattensis extract: a novel approach for enhanced anticancer efficacy and biocompatibility

The purpose of the present study is to enhance the anticancer and biocompatibility performance of TiO2 NPs, ZnO NPs, ZnO-TiO2 (NCs), and ZnO-TiO2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) NCs against two types of human cancer (HCT116) and normal (HUVCE) cells. A novel procedure for synthesizing ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs has been developed using Senna surattensis extract. The improved physicochemical properties of the obtained samples were investigated using different techniques such as XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, FTIR, DLS and UV-visible spectroscopy. XRD results showed that the addition of ZnO and RGO sheets affects the crystal structure and phase of TiO2 NPs. SEM and TEM images displayed that the TiO2 NPs and ZnO NPs were small with uniform spherical morphology in the prepared ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs. Besides, it is shown that ZnO-TiO2 NCs anchored onto the surface of RGO sheets with a particle size of 14.80 ± 0.5 nm. XPS data confirmed the surface chemical composition and oxidation states of ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs. Functional groups of prepared NPs and NCs were determined using FTIR spectroscopy. DLS data confirmed that the addition of ZnO and RGO sheets improves the negative surface charge of the prepared pure TiO2 NPs (-22.51 mV), ZnO NPs (-18.27 mV), ZnO-TiO2 NCs (-30.20 mV), and ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs (-33.77 mV). Optical analysis exhibited that the bandgap energies of TiO2 NPs (3.30 eV), ZnO NPs (3.33 eV), ZnO-TiO2 NCs (3.03 eV), and ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs (2.78 eV) were further enhanced by adding ZnO NPs and RGO sheets. This indicates that the synthesized samples can be applied to cancer therapy and environmental remediation. The biological data demonstrated that the produced ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs show a more cytotoxic effect on HCT116 cells compared to pure TiO2 NPs and ZnO-TiO2 NCs. On the other hand, these NCs displayed the lowest level of toxicity towards normal HUVCE cells. These results indicate that the ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs have strong toxicity against HCT116 cells and are compatible with normal cells. Our results show that the plant extract enhanced the physicochemical properties of NPs and NCs compared with the traditional chemical methods for synthesis. This study could open new avenues for developing more effective and targeted cancer treatments.

In Situ Synthesis of Hierarchical Flower-like Sn/SnO2 Heterogeneous Structure for Ethanol GAS Detection

In this study, morphogenetic-based Sn/SnO2 graded-structure composites were created by synthesizing two-dimensional SnO sheets using a hydrothermal technique, self-assembling into flower-like structures with an average petal width of roughly 3 um. The morphology and structure of the as-synthesized samples were characterized by utilizing SEM, XRD, XPS, etc. The gas-sensing characteristics of gas sensors based on the flower-like Sn/SnO2 were thoroughly researched. The sensor displayed exceptional selectivity, a rapid response time of 4 s, and an ultrahigh response at 250 °C (Ra/Rg = 17.46). The excellent and enhanced ethanol-gas-sensing properties were mainly owing to the three-dimensional structure and the rise in the Schottky barrier caused by the in situ production of tin particles.

Enhancement of H2S sensing performance of rGO decorated CuO thin films: experimental and DFT studies

We demonstrate a highly selective and sensitive Cupric oxide (CuO) thin film-based low concentration Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) sensor. The sensitivity was improved around three times by decorating with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. CuO thin films were deposited by Chemical Vapor Deposition followed by inter-digital electrode fabrication by a thermal evaporations system. The crystal structure of CuO was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. The sensing response of pristine CuO was found around 54% at 100 °C to 100 ppm of H₂S. In contrast, the sensing response was enhanced to 167% by decorating with rGO of 1.5 mg ml^-1concentration solution. The sensing was improved due to the formation of heterojunctions between the rGO and CuO. The developed sensor was examined under various gas environments and found to be highly selective towards H₂S gas. The improvement in sensing response has been attributed to increased hole concentration in CuO in the presence of rGO due to the Fermi level alignment and increased absorption of H₂S molecules at the rGO/CuO heterojunction. Further, electronic structure calculations show the physisorption behavior of H₂S molecules on the different adsorption sites. Detailed insight into the gas sensing mechanism is discussed based on experimental results and electronic structure calculations.
