Ligand-free sub-5 nm platinum nanocatalysts on polydopamine supports: size-controlled synthesis and size-dictated reaction pathway selection

Plasmon-Switched Kinetics for Formic Acid Dehydrogenation: Selective Adsorption Driven by Local Field and Hot Carriers

Understanding illumination-mediated kinetics is essential for catalyst design in plasmon catalysis. Here we prepare Pd-based plasmonic catalysts with tunable electronic structures to reveal the underlying illumination-enhanced kinetic mechanisms for formic acid (HCOOH) dehydrogenation. We demonstrate a kinetic switch from a competitive Langmuir-Hinshelwood adsorption mode in dark to a non-competitive type under irradiation triggered by local field and hot carriers. Specifically, the electromagnetic field induces a spatial-temporal separation of dehydrogenation-favorable configurations of reactant molecule HCOOH and HCOO- due to their natural different polarities. Meanwhile, the generated energetic carriers can serve as active sites for selective molecular adsorption. The hot electrons act as adsorption sites for HCOOH, while holes prefer to adsorb HCOO-. Such unique non-competitive adsorption kinetics induced by plasmon effects serves as another typical characteristic of plasmonic catalysis that remarkably differs from thermocatalysis. This work unravels unique adsorption transformations and a kinetic switching driven by plasmon nonthermal effects.

Phase-Controlled Ruthenium Nanocrystals on Colloidal Polydopamine Supports and Their Catalytic Behaviors in Aerobic Oxidation Reactions

The past decade has witnessed rapidly growing interest in noble metal nanostructures adopting unconventional metastable crystal phases. In the case of Ru, chemically synthesized nanocrystals typically form thermodynamically favored hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal lattices, whereas it remains significantly more challenging to synthesize Ru nanocrystals in the metastable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. In this work, we have synthesized polydopamine (PDA)-supported hcp and fcc Ru nanocrystals in a phase-selective manner through one-pot thermal reduction of appropriate Ru(III) precursors in a polyol solvent. Benefiting from the unique surface-adhesion function of PDA, we have been able to grow phase-controlled sub-5 nm Ru nanocrystals directly on colloidal PDA supports without prefunctionalizing the particle surfaces with any molecular linkers or surface-capping ligands. Success in phase-controlled synthesis of capping ligand-free Ru nanocrystals dispersed on the same support material enables us to systematically compare the intrinsic mass-specific and surface-specific activities of fcc and hcp Ru nanocatalysts toward the aerobic oxidation of a chromogenic molecular substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), under a broad range of reaction conditions. We use UV-vis absorption spectroscopy to monitor the conversion of the reactant molecules into the one-electron and two-electron oxidation products in real time during Ru-catalyzed oxidation of TMB, which is found to be a mechanistically complex molecule-transforming process involving multiple elementary steps. The apparent reaction rates and detailed kinetic features are observed to be not only intimately related to the crystalline structures of the Ru nanocatalysts but also profoundly influenced by several other critical factors, such as the pH of the reaction medium, the initial concentration of TMB, Ru coverage on the PDA supports, and degree of nanoparticle aggregation.

Functionalization of 3D Printed Scaffolds Using Polydopamine and Silver Nanoparticles for Bone-Interfacing Applications

The prevention of bacterial colonization and the stimulation of osseointegration are two major requirements for bone-interfacing materials to reduce the incidence of complications and promote the restoration of the patient's health. The present investigation developed an effective, two-step functionalization of 3D printed scaffolds intended for bone-interfacing applications using a simple polydopamine (PDA) dip-coating method followed by the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) after a second coating step in silver nitrate. 3D printed polymeric substrates coated with a ∼20 nm PDA layer and 70 nm diameter AgNPs proved effective in hindering Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation, with a 3000-8000-fold reduction in the number of bacterial colonies formed. The implementation of porous geometries significantly accelerated osteoblast-like cell growth. Microscopy characterization further elucidated homogeneity, features, and penetration of the coating inside the scaffold. A proof-of-concept coating on titanium substrates attests to the transferability of the method to other materials, broadening the range of applications both in and outside the medical sector. The antibacterial efficiency of the coating is likely to lead to a decrease in the number of bacterial infections developed after surgery in the presence of these coatings on prosthetics, thus translating to a reduction in revision surgeries and improved health outcomes.

One-Pot Synthesis of Pt Nanobowls Assembled from Ultrafine Nanoparticles for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Simultaneously engineering a bowl-like and ultrafine nano-size structure offers an attractive route to not only increase the utilization efficiency of noble metals, the specific surface areas and the availability of active sites, but also boost the structural robustness and long-term stability. However, a great challenge remains in terms of the methods of synthesis. Herein, we report a facile one-pot hydrothermal method for the preparation of hollow porous Pt nanobowls (NBs) assembled from ultrafine particles. N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) acts as a structure-directing agent that forms a self-template with Pt ions and drives the nucleation and assembly of Pt metals, resulting in the fabrication of Pt NBs from ultrafine particles. By virtue of their unique structure and morphology, the optimized Pt NBs exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity with 3.1-fold greater mass activity and 2.6-fold greater specific activities compared with those of commercial Pt black catalysts, as well as excellent stability and anti-poisoning ability.
