The multicomponent synergistic effect of a hierarchical Li0.485La0.505TiO3 solid-state electrolyte for dendrite-free lithium-metal batteries

Ultralong Cycling and Interfacial Regulation of Bilayer Heterogeneous Composite Solid-State Electrolytes in Lithium Metal Batteries

Under the background of "carbon neutral", lithium-ion batteries (LIB) have been widely used in portable electronic devices and large-scale energy storage systems, but the current commercial electrolyte is mainly liquid organic compounds, which have serious safety risks. In this paper, a bilayer heterogeneous composite solid-state electrolyte (PLPE) was constructed with the 3D LiX zeolite nanofiber (LiX-NF) layer and in-situ interfacial layer, which greatly extends the life span of lithium metal batteries (LMB). LiX-NF not only offers a continuous fast path for Li+, but also zeolite's Lewis acid-base interaction can immobilize large anions, which significantly improves the electrochemical performance of the electrolyte. In addition, the in-situ interfacial layer at the electrode-electrolyte interface can effectively facilitate the uniform deposition of Li+ and inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, the Li/Li battery assembled with PLPE can be stably cycled for more than 2500 h at 0.1 mA cm-2. Meanwhile, the initial discharge capacity of the LiFePO4/PLPE/Li battery can be 162.43 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C, and the capacity retention rate is 82.74% after 500 cycles. These results emphasize that this bilayer heterogeneous composite solid-state electrolyte has distinct properties and shows excellent potential for application in LMB.

Improving the ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes induced by ceramic nanowire fillers with abundant lithium vacancies

The addition of ceramic fillers is regarded as an effective strategy for enhancing the ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes. However, particulate fillers typically fail to provide continuous conductive pathways and effective reinforcement. Herein, we report a ceramic nanowire filler with long-range interfacial conductivity and abundant lithium vacancies for a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based all-solid-state polymer electrolyte. LLZO nanowires (LLZO NWs) with a high aspect ratio are synthesized by combining sol-gel electrospinning and the multi-step process involving pre-oxidation, pre-sintering, and secondary sintering, resulting in a high tensile strength of the composite electrolyte (6.87 MPa). Notably, tantalum-aluminum co-substituted LLZO NWs (TALLZO NWs) release abundant lithium vacancies, further enhancing the Lewis acid-base properties, leading to a rapid ion migration speed (Li+ transfer number = 0.79) and significantly high ionic conductivity (3.80 × 10-4 S cm-1). Due to the synergistic effect of nanostructure modification and heteroatom co-doping, the assembled all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery exhibits a high initial discharge capacity (776 mA h g-1 at 25 °C), remarkable rate capability, and excellent cycling performance (81% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.1C).

In-situ cross-linked multifunctional polymer electrolyte buffer layers for high-performance garnet solid-state lithium metal batteries

The garnet Li_6.75La₃Zr_1.75Ta_0.25O₁₂ (LLZTO) is one of the most promising electrolytes for commercial application since of its high ionic conductivity and good stability to Li. Nevertheless, the poor electrolyte/electrode interface contact enlarges the interface impedance of all-solid-state battery (ASSB). Herein, a multifunctional polymer electrolyte (MPE) interface buffer layers are formed on both sides of LLZTO surface through an in-situ crosslinking strategy to improve the interface contact with electrodes, which can facilitate uniform Li⁺ deposition/exfoliation and inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites as evidenced by the reduced interface impedance (103.4 Ω cm²), the increased critical current density (CDD, 1.2 mA cm^-2) and 950 h stable cycle of Li symmetric cells at 0.7 mA cm^-2, 0.7 mA h cm^-2. Besides, the MPE layer can reduce the magnitude of electric field at the interface and widen the electrochemical window (0∼5.2 V). The stable interface of the LLZTO@MPE/cathode enables the full cells matching with the LiFePO₄ (LFP) and LiNi_0.5Co_0.2Mn_0.3O₂ (NCM523) cathodes to deliver superior electrochemical performances. Specifically, the Li/MPE@LLZTO@MPE/LFP delivers a capacity retention rate of 87% after 200 cycles at 1 C. When it's matched with the NCM523 cathode, a capacity retention rate of 98% is retained after 100 cycles at 1 C. This work provides an effective and simple way to build good-interface-contact and long-lifespan garnet solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs).
