A fluorescent, chirality-responsive, and water-soluble cage as a multifunctional molecular container for drug delivery

Controlling the broadband enhanced light chirality with L-shaped dielectric metamaterials

The inherently weak chiroptical responses of natural materials limit their usage for controlling and enhancing chiral light-matter interactions. Recently, several nanostructures with subwavelength scale dimensions were demonstrated, mainly due to the advent of nanofabrication technologies, as a potential alternative to efficiently enhance chirality. However, the intrinsic lossy nature of metals and the inherent narrowband response of dielectric planar thin films or metasurface structures pose severe limitations toward the practical realization of broadband and tailorable chiral systems. Here, we tackle these problems by designing all-dielectric silicon-based L-shaped optical metamaterials based on tilted nanopillars that exhibit broadband and enhanced chiroptical response in transmission operation. We use an emerging bottom-up fabrication approach, named glancing angle deposition, to assemble these dielectric metamaterials on a wafer scale. The reported strong chirality and optical anisotropic properties are controllable in terms of both amplitude and operating frequency by simply varying the shape and dimensions of the nanopillars. The presented nanostructures can be used in a plethora of emerging nanophotonic applications, such as chiral sensors, polarization filters, and spin-locked nanowaveguides.

Cage-based sensors for circular dichroism analysis

Quantitative chiral sensing relying on circular dichroism (CD) is very important for determining the enantiomeric excess or concentration of small molecules without strong chromophores, because they form chiral complexes with sensors, yielding strong CD signals. Three-dimensional cages are promising platforms for chiral CD due to their stereochemical flexibility and their variety of cavity and external binding sites that can be used as chiral CD sensors. In this minireview, we discuss recent advances, future challenges, and opportunities in the quantitative sensing of small molecules in host-guest and peripheral complexes with cage sensors by chiral CD. We aim to provide inspiration for the rational design of cage sensors for quantitative chiral sensing of small molecules based on CD.

A tetraphenylethene-based Schiff base AIEgen with a large Stokes shift as probe for highly sensitive and selective detection of aqueous Cu2+ ions and its application in cell imaging

In this work, an AIE-active tetraphenylethene-based Schiff base fluorescent probe 3 with a large Stokes shift (247 nm) was designed and synthesized. It was found that the aggregated probe 3 exhibited very high selectivity and anti-interference ability for Cu²⁺ in PBS buffer (70% f_w) through a fluorescence "turn-off" strategy. Job's plot and NMR analysis indicated the two phenolic hydroxyl groups of the benzene ring and the N atom (-CH=N-) on probe 3 interacted with Cu²⁺ ions in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. A comprehensive analysis of the Stern-Volmer and binding constant indicated a rather strong interaction between probe 3 and Cu²⁺ ions. Probe 3 illustrated excellent sensitivity toward Cu²⁺ under ppb level (4.5 nM) and achieved more than 95% recovery in river, lake and tap water toward estimation of Cu²⁺ ions in the analytical applications. Moreover, probe 3 was able to realize bioimaging of HepG2 cells and be quenched by intracellular Cu²⁺ ions, making it promising as a sensitive Cu²⁺ sensor for organisms.

The Green Box: Selenoviologen-Based Tetracationic Cyclophane for Electrochromism, Host-Guest Interactions, and Visible-Light Photocatalysis

The novel selenoviologen-based tetracationic cyclophanes (green boxes 3 and 5) with rigid electron-deficient cavities are synthesized via S_N2 reactions in two steps. The green boxes exhibit good redox properties, narrow energy gaps, and strong absorption in the visible range (370-470 nm), especially for the green box 5 containing two selenoviologen (SeV²⁺) units. Meanwhile, the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) reveals that the green boxes have a stabilized dicationic biradical, high efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and long-lived charge separation state due to the formation of cyclophane structure. Based on the excellent photophysical and redox properties, the green boxes are applied to electrochromic devices (ECDs) and visible-light-driven hydrogen production with a high H₂ generation rate (34 μmol/h), turnover number (203), and apparent quantum yield (5.33 × 10^-2). In addition, the host-guest recognitions are demonstrated between the green boxes and electron-rich guests (e.g., G1:1-naphthol and G2:platinum(II)-tethered naphthalene) in MeCN through C-H···π and π···π interactions. As a one-component system, the host-guest complexes of green box⊃G2 are successfully applied to visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production due to the intramolecular electron transfer (IET) between platinum(II) of G2 and SeV²⁺ of the green box, which provides a simplified system for solar energy conversion.

A triple-diazonium reagent for virus crosslinking and the synthesis of an azo-linked molecular cage

The first bench-stable triple-diazonium reagent (TDA-1) was rationally designed and synthesized for coupling and crosslinking. The three reactive sites of TDA-1 can react with phenol-containing molecules as well as plant viruses in aqueous buffers efficiently. In addition, a new-type azo-linked cage was constructed by the direct reaction of TDA-1 with a triple-phenol molecule and was characterized by X-ray crystallography.
