Alkyl Chloride-Functionalized Polymers Mediate Oxidation of Thioethers Initiated by Ionizing Radiation

Irradiation of aqueous solutions containing alkyl chlorides generates peroxyl radicals by reactions of alkyl chlorides, aqueous electrons, and dissolved oxygen. The peroxyl radical can oxidize thioethers to sulfoxides, a transformation that has relevance for targeted or triggered drug delivery. However, small-molecule alkyl chlorides can induce liver damage, which limits their potential for application in anticancer therapy. Here, we show that alkyl chlorides bound to a hydrophilic random copolymer chain behave similar to small-molecule alkyl chlorides. Our work shows that using polymeric alkyl chlorides can be an alternative to small-molecule alkyl chlorides provided that the alkyl chloride functionalities are easily accessible to aqueous electrons.

NPh3-Mediated WO3-Photocatalyzed Semiheterogeneous Hydroxylation of Aryl and Alkyl Boronic Acids

With an inexpensive and commercially available WO3 semiconductor as the heterogeneous photocatalyst, a catalytic amount of NPh3 as the single-electron donor, and ambient air as the single-electron acceptor and oxygen source, the semiheterogeneous photocatalytic hydroxylation of alkyl and aryl boronic acids was developed. A broad range of hydroxylated compounds can be obtained in excellent yields.

Autonomous Soft Robots Empowered by Chemical Reaction Networks

Hydrogel actuators are important for designing stimuli-sensitive soft robots. They generate mechanical motion by exploiting compartmentalized (de)swelling in response to a stimulus. However, classical switching methods, such as manually lowering or increasing the pH, cannot provide more complex autonomous motions. By coupling an autonomously operating pH-flip with programmable lifetimes to a hydrogel system containing pH-responsive and non-responsive compartments, autoonenomous forward and backward motion as well as more complex tasks, such as interlocking of "puzzle pieces" and collection of objects are realized. All operations are initiated by one simple trigger, and the devices operate in a "fire and forget" mode. More complex self-regulatory behavior is obtained by adding chemo-mechano-chemo feedback mechanisms. Due to its simplicity, this method shows great potential for the autonomous operation of soft grippers and metamaterials.
