The effective removal of Pb2+ by activated carbon fibers modified by l-cysteine: exploration of kinetics, thermodynamics and mechanism

Inclusive study of peanut shells derived activated carbon as an adsorbent for removal of lead and methylene blue from water

Green and efficient agro-waste-based activated carbon has been prepared utilizing peanut shells for adsorptive elimination of an industrial dye, methylene blue, and lead from polluted water. The carbonaceous biomass obtained from peanut shells was chemically activated using either NaOH, ZnCl2, or steam and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption and desorption studies. The adsorption process was optimal for methylene blue at alkaline pH, while pH 4.5 was optimal for Pb (II) adsorption. The adsorption takes place through pseudo-second-order kinetic, and the rate-governing step of the adsorption procedure are intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion. Furthermore, the thermodynamics of the adsorption process has been studied, and the obtained Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) values are negative (- 35.90 to - 43.59 kJ mol-1) indicating the spontaneous adsorption of the investigated pollutants on the prepared activated carbon. As per the correlation coefficient, the obtained results were best fit by the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacity of 303.03 mg g-1 for methylene blue and 130.89 mg g-1 for Pb (II). The activated carbon successfully removed methylene blue and Pb (II) with %removal exceeding 95%. The mechanisms of interaction of Pb (II) with the activated carbon is a combination of electrostatic interaction and ion exchange, while methylene blue interacts with the activated carbon via π-π interaction, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interaction. Thus, the prepared activated carbon has been employed to decontaminate wastewater and groundwater samples. The developed agro-waste-based activated carbon is a promising, cost-efficient, green, and accessible tool for water remediation.

Adsorption and desorption behavior of Zn2+ in a flow-through electrosorption reactor

As heavy metal industrial wastewater increases in volume and complexity, we need more efficient, cheaper, and renewable technologies to curb its environmental impact. Compared to advection electrosorption, through-flow electrosorption is a hotspot technique that makes more efficient use of the adsorption capacity of activated carbon fiber mats. A cascade flow-through electrosorption assembly based on activated carbon fiber was used to obtain the best adsorption of Zn2+ in water at a voltage of 2 V, pH value of 8, plate spacing of 3 mm, and temperature of 15°C. The process is more closely fitted to the secondary adsorption kinetic equation and the Langmuir equation. The adsorption capacity of the module decreases at a progressively slower rate with the number of cycles and will eventually retain 75% of its peak value with significant regenerability. The study of this module can provide technical support for treating heavy metal wastewater.

Heavy Metal Remediation by Dry Mycelium Membranes: Approaches to Sustainable Lead Remediation in Water

Lead contamination poses significant and lasting health risks, particularly in children. This study explores the efficacy of dried mycelium membranes, distinct from live fungal biomass, for the remediation of lead (Pb(II)) in water. Dried mycelium offers unique advantages, including environmental resilience, ease of handling, biodegradability, and mechanical reliability. The study explores Pb(II) removal mechanisms through sorption and mineralization by dried mycelium hyphae in aqueous solutions. The sorption isotherm studies reveal a high Pb(II) removal efficiency, exceeding 95% for concentrations below 1000 ppm and ∼63% above 1500 ppm, primarily driven by electrostatic interactions. The measured infrared peak shifts and the pseudo-second-order kinetics for sorption suggests a correlation between sorption capacity and the density of interacting functional groups. The study also explores novel surface functionalization of the mycelium network with phosphate to enhance Pb(II) removal, which enables remediation efficiencies >95% for concentrations above 1500 ppm. Scanning electron microscopy images show a pH-dependent formation of Pb-based crystals uniformly deposited throughout the entire mycelium network. Continuous cross-flow filtration tests employing a dried mycelium membrane demonstrate its efficacy as a microporous membrane for Pb(II) removal, reaching remediation efficiency of 85-90% at the highest Pb(II) concentrations. These findings suggest that dried mycelium membranes can be a viable alternative to synthetic membranes in heavy metal remediation, with potential environmental and water treatment applications.

Facile Preparation of Polyacrylonitrile-Based Activated Carbon Fiber Felts for Effective Adsorption of Dipropyl Sulfide

Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) derived from various polymeric fibers with the characteristics of a high specific surface area, developed pore structure, and good flexibility are promising for the new generation of chemical protection clothing. In this paper, a polyacrylonitrile-based ACF felt was prepared via the process of liquid phase pre-oxidation, along with a one-step carbonization and chemical activation method. The obtained ACF felt exhibited a large specific surface area of 2219.48 m2/g and pore volume of 1.168 cm3/g, as well as abundant polar groups on the surface. Owing to the developed pore structure and elaborated surface chemical property, the ACF felt possessed an intriguing adsorption performance for a chemical warfare agent simulant dipropyl sulfide (DPS), with the highest adsorption capacity being 202.38 mg/g. The effects of the initial concentration of DPS and temperature on the adsorption performance of ACF felt were investigated. Meanwhile, a plausible adsorption mechanism was proposed based on the kinetic analysis and fitting of different adsorption isotherm models. The results demonstrated that the adsorption process of DPS onto ACF felt could be well fitted with a pseudo-second-order equation, indicating a synergistic effect of chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. We anticipate that this work could be helpful to the design and development of advanced ACF felts for the application of breathable chemical protection clothing.
