A comprehensive review on the inherent and enhanced antifouling mechanisms of hydrogels and their applications

Biofouling remains a persistent challenge within the domains of biomedicine, tissue engineering, marine industry, and membrane separation processes. Multifunctional hydrogels have garnered substantial attention due to their complex three-dimensional architecture, hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and flexibility. These hydrogels have shown notable advances across various engineering disciplines. The antifouling efficacy of hydrogels typically covers a range of strategies to mitigate or inhibit the adhesion of particulate matter, biological entities, or extraneous pollutants onto their external or internal surfaces. This review provides a comprehensive review of the antifouling properties and applications of hydrogels. We first focus on elucidating the fundamental principles for the inherent resistance of hydrogels to fouling. This is followed by a comprehensive investigation of the methods employed to enhance the antifouling properties enabled by the hydrogels' composition, network structure, conductivity, photothermal properties, release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and incorporation of silicon and fluorine compounds. Additionally, we explore the emerging prospects of antifouling hydrogels to alleviate the severe challenges posed by surface contamination, membrane separation and wound dressings. The inclusion of detailed mechanistic insights and the judicious selection of antifouling hydrogels are geared toward identifying extant gaps that must be bridged to meet practical requisites while concurrently addressing long-term antifouling applications.

Polyoxometalate nanocluster-infused triple IPN hydrogels for excellent microplastic removal from contaminated water: detection, photodegradation, and upcycling

Microplastic (MP) pollution pervades global ecosystems, originating from improper plastic disposal and fragmentation due to factors like hydrolysis and biodegradation. These minute particles, less than 5 mm in size, have become omnipresent, impacting terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments worldwide. Their ubiquity poses severe threats to marine life by causing physical harm and potentially transferring toxins through the food chain. Addressing this environmental crisis necessitates a sustainable strategy. Our proposed solution involves a highly efficient copper substitute polyoxometalate (Cu-POM) nanocluster infused triple interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel, comprising chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polyaniline (PANI) (referred to as pGel@IPN) for mitigating MP contamination from water. This 3D IPN architecture, incorporating nanoclusters, also enhances the hydrogel's photodegradation capabilities. Our scalable approach offers a sustainable strategy to combat MPs in water bodies, as demostrated by the adsorption behaviors on the hydrogel matrix under varying conditions, simulating real-world scenarios. Evaluations of physicochemical properties, mechanical strength, and thermal behavior underscore the hydrogel's robustness and stability. Detecting minute MP particles remains challenging, prompting us to label MPs with Nile red for fluorescence microscopic analysis of their concentration and adsorption on the hydrogel. The catalytic properties of POM within the hydrogel facilitate UV-induced MP degradation, highlighting a sustainable solution. Our detailed kinetics and isotherm studies revealed pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models as fitting descriptors for MP adsorption, exhibiting a high maximum adsorption capacity (Qm). Notably, pGel@IPN achieved ∼95% and ∼93% removal efficiencies for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP) MPs at pH ∼ 6.5, respectively, also demonstrating reusability for up to 5 cycles. Post-end-of-life, the spent adsorbent was efficiently upcycled into carbon nanomaterials, effectively removing the heavy metal Cr(VI), exemplifying circular economy principles. Our prepared hydrogel emerges as a potent solution for MP removal from water, promising effective mitigation of the emerging pollutants of MPs while ensuring sustainable environmental practices.

Innovations in textile wastewater management: a review of zero liquid discharge technology

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology emerges as a transformative solution for sustainable wastewater management in the textile industry, emphasizing water recycling and discharge minimization. This review comprehensively explores ZLD's pivotal role in reshaping wastewater management practices within the textile sector. With a primary focus on water recycling and minimized discharge, the review thoroughly examines the economic and environmental dimensions of ZLD. Additionally, it includes a comparative cost analysis against conventional wastewater treatment methods and offers a comprehensive outlook on the global ZLD market. Presently valued at US $0.71 billion, the market is anticipated to reach US $1.76 billion by 2026, reflecting a robust annual growth rate of 12.6%. Despite ZLD's efficiency in wastewater recovery, environmental challenges, such as heightened greenhouse gas emissions, increased carbon footprint, elevated energy consumption, and chemical usage, are discussed. Methodologies employed in this review involve an extensive analysis of existing literature, empirical data, and case studies on ZLD implementation in the textile industry worldwide. While acknowledging existing adoption barriers, the review underscores ZLD's potential to guide the textile industry toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.

Biomimetic Hydrogel Applications and Challenges in Bone, Cartilage, and Nerve Repair

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is a highly sought-after field for researchers aiming to compensate and repair defective tissues. However, the design and development of suitable scaffold materials with bioactivity for application in tissue repair and regeneration has been a great challenge. In recent years, biomimetic hydrogels have shown great possibilities for use in tissue engineering, where they can tune mechanical properties and biological properties through functional chemical modifications. Also, biomimetic hydrogels provide three-dimensional (3D) network spatial structures that can imitate normal tissue microenvironments and integrate cells, scaffolds, and bioactive substances for tissue repair and regeneration. Despite the growing interest in various hydrogels for biomedical use in previous decades, there are still many aspects of biomimetic hydrogels that need to be understood for biomedical and clinical trial applications. This review systematically describes the preparation of biomimetic hydrogels and their characteristics, and it details the use of biomimetic hydrogels in bone, cartilage, and nerve tissue repair. In addition, this review outlines the application of biomimetic hydrogels in bone, cartilage, and neural tissues regarding drug delivery. In particular, the advantages and shortcomings of biomimetic hydrogels in biomaterial tissue engineering are highlighted, and future research directions are proposed.

Polymer-Based Hydrogels Applied in Drug Delivery: An Overview

Polymer-based hydrogels are hydrophilic polymer networks with crosslinks widely applied for drug delivery applications because of their ability to hold large amounts of water and biological fluids and control drug release based on their unique physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Current trends in the development of hydrogel drug delivery systems involve the release of drugs in response to specific triggers such as pH, temperature, or enzymes for targeted drug delivery and to reduce the potential for systemic toxicity. In addition, developing injectable hydrogel formulations that are easily used and sustain drug release during this extended time is a growing interest. Another emerging trend in hydrogel drug delivery is the synthesis of nano hydrogels and other functional substances for improving targeted drug loading and release efficacy. Following these development trends, advanced hydrogels possessing mechanically improved properties, controlled release rates, and biocompatibility is developing as a focus of the field. More complex drug delivery systems such as multi-drug delivery and combination therapies will be developed based on these advancements. In addition, polymer-based hydrogels are gaining increasing attention in personalized medicine because of their ability to be tailored to a specific patient, for example, drug release rates, drug combinations, target-specific drug delivery, improvement of disease treatment effectiveness, and healthcare cost reduction. Overall, hydrogel application is advancing rapidly, towards more efficient and effective drug delivery systems in the future.
