On the electrocatalytical oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability of quaternary RhMo-doped PtNi/C octahedral nanocrystals

Mesoporous Mo-doped PtBi intermetallic metallene superstructures to enable the complete electrooxidation of ethylene glycol

Metallenes, intermetallic compounds, and porous nanocrystals are the three types of most promising advanced nanomaterials for practical fuel cell devices, but how to integrate the three structural features into a single nanocrystal remains a huge challenge. Herein, we report an efficient one-step method to construct freestanding mesoporous Mo-doped PtBi intermetallic metallene superstructures (denoted M-PtBiMo IMSs) as highly active and stable ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) catalysts. The materials retained their catalytic performance, even in complex direct ethylene glycol fuel cells (DEGFCs). The M-PtBiMo IMSs showed EGOR mass and specific activities of 24.0 A mgPt-1 and 61.1 mA cm-2, respectively, which were both dramatically higher than those of benchmark Pt black and Pt/C. In situ infrared spectra showed that ethylene glycol underwent complete oxidation via a 10-electron CO-free pathway over the M-PtBiMo IMSs. Impressively, M-PtBiMo IMSs demonstrated a much higher power density (173.6 mW cm-2) and stability than Pt/C in DEGFCs. Density functional theory calculations revealed that oxophilic Mo species promoted the EGOR kinetics. This work provides new possibilities for designing advanced Pt-based nanomaterials to improve DEGFC performance.

Surface engineering for stable electrocatalysis

In recent decades, significant progress has been achieved in rational developments of electrocatalysts through constructing novel atomistic structures and modulating catalytic surface topography, realizing substantial enhancement in electrocatalytic activities. Numerous advanced catalysts were developed for electrochemical energy conversion, exhibiting low overpotential, high intrinsic activity, and selectivity. Yet, maintaining the high catalytic performance under working conditions with high polarization and vigorous microkinetics that induce intensive degradation of surface nanostructures presents a significant challenge for commercial applications. Recently, advanced operando and computational techniques have provided comprehensive mechanistic insights into the degradation of surficial functional structures. Additionally, various innovative strategies have been devised and proven effective in sustaining electrocatalytic activity under harsh operating conditions. This review aims to discuss the most recent understanding of the degradation microkinetics of catalysts across an entire range of anodic to cathodic polarizations, encompassing processes such as oxygen evolution and reduction, hydrogen reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction. Subsequently, innovative strategies adopted to stabilize the materials' structure and activity are highlighted with an in-depth discussion of the underlying rationale. Finally, we present conclusions and perspectives regarding future research and development. By identifying the research gaps, this review aims to inspire further exploration of surface degradation mechanisms and rational design of durable electrocatalysts, ultimately contributing to the large-scale utilization of electroconversion technologies.

In Situ and Operando X-ray Scattering Methods in Electrochemistry and Electrocatalysis

Electrochemical and electrocatalytic processes are of key importance for the transition to a sustainable energy supply as well as for a wide variety of other technologically relevant fields. Further development of these processes requires in-depth understanding of the atomic, nano, and micro scale structure of the materials and interfaces in electrochemical devices under reaction conditions. We here provide a comprehensive review of in situ and operando studies by X-ray scattering methods, which are powerful and highly versatile tools to provide such understanding. We discuss the application of X-ray scattering to a wide variety of electrochemical systems, ranging from metal and oxide single crystals to nanoparticles and even full devices. We show how structural data on bulk phases, electrode-electrolyte interfaces, and nanoscale morphology can be obtained and describe recent developments that provide highly local information and insight into the composition and electronic structure. These X-ray scattering studies yield insights into the structure in the double layer potential range as well as into the structural evolution during electrocatalytic processes and phase formation reactions, such as nucleation and growth during electrodeposition and dissolution, the formation of passive films, corrosion processes, and the electrochemical intercalation into battery materials.

Unlocking Catalytic Potential: Exploring the Impact of Thermal Treatment on Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Nanomaterials

In the evolving field of electrocatalysis, thermal treatment of nano-electrocatalysts has become an essential strategy for performance enhancement. This review systematically investigates the impact of various thermal treatments on the catalytic potential of nano-electrocatalysts. The focus encompasses an in-depth analysis of the changes induced in structural, morphological, and compositional properties, as well as alterations in electro-active surface area, surface chemistry, and crystal defects. By providing a comprehensive comparison of commonly used thermal techniques, such as annealing, calcination, sintering, pyrolysis, hydrothermal, and solvothermal methods, this review serves as a scientific guide for selecting the right thermal technique and favorable temperature to tailor the nano-electrocatalysts for optimal electrocatalysis. The resultant modifications in catalytic activity are explored across key electrochemical reactions such as electrochemical (bio)sensing, catalytic degradation, oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, fuel cells, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Through a detailed examination of the underlying mechanisms and synergistic effects, this review contributes to a fundamental understanding of the role of thermal treatments in enhancing electrocatalytic properties. The insights provided offer a roadmap for future research aimed at optimizing the electrocatalytic performance of nanomaterials, fostering the development of next-generation sensors and energy conversion technologies.

PtRuFe/Carbon Nanotube Composites as Bifunctional Catalysts for Efficient Methanol Oxidation and Oxygen Reduction

The design of bifunctional catalysts with high performance and low platinum for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is of significant implication to promote the industrialization of fuel cells. In our work, Pt/carbon nanotube (CNT), Pt₃Ru/CNT, and PtRu/CNT catalysts were synthesized by plasma heat treatment, in which the pyrolysis reduction of organometallic salts and the dispersion of CNTs were achieved simultaneously, and catalytic nanoparticles with uniform particle size were anchored on the dispersed CNT surface. Later, Fe was further introduced, and PtFe/CNT, Pt₃RuFe/CNT, and PtRuFe/CNT catalysts were synthesized by calcination, and the structure and electrochemical properties in both MOR and ORR of all as-synthesized catalysts were investigated. The results indicated that plasma thermal treatment has the advantage of rapidness and immediacy in the synthesis of catalysts, and the Pt/CNT, Pt₃Ru/CNT, and PtRu/CNT catalysts exhibited better electrocatalytic properties than commercial platinum (JM-Pt/C) catalysts. Meanwhile, the introduction of Fe during the calcination further changed the surface electronic properties of catalytic nanoparticles and enhanced the graphitization degree of catalysts; the PtRuFe/CNT catalyst exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic properties with a mass activity of 834.3 mA mg^-1 for MOR and a half-wave potential of 0.928 V in alkaline media for ORR. The combination of plasma thermal treatment and calcination puts forward a novel strategy for the optimization of catalysts, and the synthesis method based on plasma dispersion needs to be further optimized to achieve its large-scale promotion.
