Planting the Seeds of a Decision Tree for Ionic Liquids: Steric and Electronic Impacts on Melting Points of Triarylphosponium Ionic Liquids

While machine learning and artificial intelligence offer promising avenues in the computer-aided design of materials, the complexity of these computational techniques remains a barrier for scientists outside of the specific fields of study. Leveraging decision tree models, inspired by empirical methodologies, offers a pragmatic solution to the knowledge barrier presented by artificial intelligence (AI). Herein, we present a model allowing for the qualitative prediction of melting points of ionic liquids derived from the crystallographic analysis of a series of phosphonium-based ionic liquids. By carefully tailoring the steric and electronic properties of the cations within these salts, trends in the melting points are observed, pointing toward the critical importance of π interactions to forming the solid state. Quantification of the percentage of these π interactions using modern quantum crystallographic approaches reveals a linear trend in the relationship of C-Hπ and π-π stacking interactions with melting points. These structure-property relationships are further examined by using computational studies, helping to demonstrate the inverse relationship of dipole moments and melting points for ionic liquids. The results provide valuable insights into the features and relationships that are consistent with achieving low Tm values in phosphonium salts, which were not apparent in earlier studies. The data gathered are presented in a simple decision tree format, allowing for visualization of the data and providing guidance toward developing yet unreported compounds.

Palladium-Catalyzed Modular Assembly of P-Stereogenic and Axially Chiral Phosphinooxazoles (PHOX) Ligands by C-P Bond Cleavage/Intermolecular C(sp2)-H Bond Functionalization

Chiral P,N-ligands are of great interest and importance in the fields of metal-catalyzed enantioselective transformations and have found numerous applications spanning drug and polymer synthesis. Here, modular assembly of diverse P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands is achieved through palladium-catalyzed asymmetric cleavage of C-P bond/intermolecular C-H bond functionalization in high atroposelectivities and diastereoselectivities of up to >99% ee and >25:1 dr. This protocol features broad substrate scope and provides an avenue for facile construction of new P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands directly from the phosphonium salts and benzoxazoles/benzothiazoles. Evaluation of the synthesized P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands in two model catalytic asymmetric reactions illustrates the potential of our strategy to access valuable chiral molecules.

Diversity-oriented synthesis of P-stereogenic and axially chiral monodentate biaryl phosphines enabled by C-P bond cleavage

Chiral monodentate biaryl phosphines (MOPs) have attracted intense attention as chiral ligands over the past decades. However, the creation of structurally diverse chiral MOPs with both P- and axial chirality is still in high demand but challenging. Here, we show a distinct strategy for diversity-oriented synthesis of structurally diverse MOPs containing both P- and axial chirality enabled by enantioselective C-P bond cleavage. The key chiral Pd^II intermediates, generated through the stereoselective oxidative addition of C-P bond, could be trapped by alkynes, R₃Si-Bpin, diboron esters or reduced by H₂O/B₂pin₂, leading to enantioenriched structurally diverse MOPs in excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Based on the outstanding properties of the parent scaffolds, the P- and axially chiral monodentate biaryl phosphines serve as excellent catalysts in asymmetric [3 + 2] annulation of MBH carbonate affording the chiral functionalized bicyclic imide.

Structurally Diverse Bench-Stable Nickel(0) Pre-Catalysts: A Practical Toolkit for In Situ Ligation Protocols

A flurry of recent research has centered on harnessing the power of nickel catalysis in organic synthesis. These efforts have been bolstered by contemporaneous development of well-defined nickel (pre)catalysts with diverse structure and reactivity. In this report, we present ten different bench-stable, 18-electron, formally zero-valent nickel-olefin complexes that are competent pre-catalysts in various reactions. Our investigation includes preparations of novel, bench-stable Ni(COD)(L) complexes (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene), in which L=quinone, cyclopentadienone, thiophene-S-oxide, and fulvene. Characterization by NMR, IR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and natural bond orbital analysis sheds light on the structure, bonding, and properties of these complexes. Applications in an assortment of nickel-catalyzed reactions underscore the complementary nature of the different pre-catalysts within this toolkit.

Stereospecific nickel-catalyzed [4+2] heteroannulation of alkynes with aminophosphanes

Enantioenriched phosphorus compounds play crucial roles in many fields ranging from catalyst to materials science to drug development. Despite advances in the construction of phosphacycles, incorporation of a P-chirogenic center into heterocycles remains challenging. Here, we report an effective method for the preparation of phosphacycles through nickel-catalyzed [4+2] heteroannulation of internal alkynes with aminophosphanes derived from o-haloanilines. Notably, chiral 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines can be prepared from P-stereogenic substrates via NH/PH tautomeric equilibrium without loss of stereochemical integrity. The strategy is found to exhibit a broad scope in terms of both reaction components, enabling modular construction of libraries of 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines with different steric and electronic properties for fine-tuning photophysical properties, where some of these compounds showed distinct fluorescence with high quantum yields. A series of mechanistic studies further shed light on the pathway of the heteroannulation and reasons for stereospecificity.

Sterically Controlled Late‐Stage Functionalization of Bulky Phosphines

The fine‐tuning of metal‐phosphine‐catalyzed reactions relies largely on accessing ever more precisely tuned phosphine ligands by de‐novo synthesis. Late‐stage C−H functionalization and diversification of commercial phosphines offers rapid access to entire libraries of derivatives based on privileged scaffolds. But existing routes, relying on phosphorus‐directed transformations, only yield functionalization of Csp2 −H bonds in a specific position relative to phosphorus. In contrast to phosphorus‐directed strategies, herein we disclose an orthogonal functionalization strategy capable of introducing a range of substituents into previously inaccessible positions on arylphosphines. The strongly coordinating phosphine group acts solely as a bystander in the sterically controlled borylation of bulky phosphines, and the resulting borylated phosphines serve as the supporting ligands for palladium during diversification through phosphine self‐assisted Suzuki‐Miyaura reactions.
