Can range-separated functionals be optimally tuned to predict spectra and excited state dynamics in photoactive iron complexes?

Cobalt-Mediated Photochemical C-H Arylation of Pyrroles

Precious metal complexes remain ubiquitous in photoredox catalysis (PRC) despite concerted efforts to find more earth-abundant catalysts and replacements based on 3d metals in particular. Most otherwise plausible 3d metal complexes are assumed to be unsuitable due to short-lived excited states, which has led researchers to prioritize the pursuit of longer excited-state lifetimes through careful molecular design. However, we report herein that the C-H arylation of pyrroles and related substrates (which are benchmark reactions for assessing the efficacy of photoredox catalysts) can be achieved using a simple and readily accessible octahedral bis(diiminopyridine) cobalt complex, [1-Co](PF6)2. Notably, [1-Co]2+ efficiently functionalizes both chloro- and bromoarene substrates despite the short excited-state lifetime of the key photoexcited intermediate *[1-Co]2+ (8 ps). We present herein the scope of this C-H arylation protocol and provide mechanistic insights derived from detailed spectroscopic and computational studies. These indicate that, despite its transient existence, reduction of *[1-Co]2+ is facilitated via pre-assembly with the NEt3 reductant, highlighting an alternative strategy for the future development of 3d metal-catalyzed PRC.

Combining Local Range Separation and Local Hybrids: A Step in the Quest for Obtaining Good Energies and Eigenvalues from One Functional

Some of the most successful exchange-correlation approximations in density functional theory are "hybrids", i.e., they rely on combining semilocal density functionals with exact nonlocal Fock exchange. In recent years, two classes of hybrid functionals have emerged as particularly promising: range-separated hybrids on the one hand, and local hybrids on the other hand. These functionals offer the hope to overcome a long-standing "observable dilemma", i.e., the fact that density functionals typically yield either a good description of binding energies, as obtained, e.g., in global and local hybrids, or physically interpretable eigenvalues, as obtained, e.g., in optimally tuned range-separated hybrids. Obtaining both of these characteristics from one and the same functional with the same set of parameters has been a long-standing challenge. We here discuss combining the concepts of local range separation and local hybrids as part of a constraint-guided quest for functionals that overcome the observable dilemma.

Photoredox matching of earth-abundant photosensitizers with hydrogen evolving catalysts by first-principles predictions

Photoredox properties of several earth-abundant light-harvesting transition metal complexes in combination with cobalt-based proton reduction catalysts have been investigated computationally to assess the fundamental viability of different photocatalytic systems of current experimental interest. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations using several GGA (BP86, BLYP), hybrid-GGA (B3LYP, B3LYP*), hybrid meta-GGA (M06, TPSSh), and range-separated hybrid (ωB97X, CAM-B3LYP) functionals were used to calculate relevant ground and excited state reduction potentials for photosensitizers, catalysts, and sacrificial electron donors. Linear energy correction factors for the DFT/TD-DFT results that provide the best agreement with available experimental reference results were determined in order to provide more accurate predictions. Among the selection of functionals, the B3LYP* and TPSSh sets of correction parameters were determined to give the best redox potentials and excited states energies, ΔEexc, with errors of ∼0.2 eV. Linear corrections for both reduction and oxidation processes significantly improve the predictions for all the redox pairs. In particular, for TPSSh and B3LYP*, the calculated errors decrease by more than 0.5 V against experimental values for catalyst reduction potentials, photosensitizer oxidation potentials, and electron donor oxidation potentials. Energy-corrected TPSSh results were finally used to predict the energetics of complete photocatalytic cycles for the light-driven activation of selected proton reduction cobalt catalysts. These predictions demonstrate the broader usefulness of the adopted approach to systematically predict full photocycle behavior for first-row transition metal photosensitizer-catalyst combinations more broadly.

Controlling the Photophysical Properties of a Series of Isostructural d6 Complexes Based on Cr0, MnI, and FeII

Development of first-row transition metal complexes with similar luminescence and photoredox properties as widely used RuII polypyridines is attractive because metals from the first transition series are comparatively abundant and inexpensive. The weaker ligand field experienced by the valence d-electrons of first-row transition metals challenges the installation of the same types of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states as in precious metal complexes, due to rapid population of energetically lower-lying metal-centered (MC) states. In a family of isostructural tris(diisocyanide) complexes of the 3d6 metals Cr0, MnI, and FeII, the increasing effective nuclear charge and ligand field strength allow us to control the energetic order between the 3MLCT and 3MC states, whereas pyrene decoration of the isocyanide ligand framework provides control over intraligand (ILPyr) states. The chromium(0) complex shows red 3MLCT phosphorescence because all other excited states are higher in energy. In the manganese(I) complex, a microsecond-lived dark 3ILPyr state, reminiscent of the types of electronic states encountered in many polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds, is the lowest and becomes photoactive. In the iron(II) complex, the lowest MLCT state has shifted to so much higher energy that 1ILPyr fluorescence occurs, in parallel to other excited-state deactivation pathways. Our combined synthetic-spectroscopic-theoretical study provides unprecedented insights into how effective nuclear charge, ligand field strength, and ligand π-conjugation affect the energetic order between MLCT and ligand-based excited states, and under what circumstances these individual states become luminescent and exploitable in photochemistry. Such insights are the key to further developments of luminescent and photoredox-active first-row transition metal complexes.

Which Electronic Structure Method to Choose in Trajectory Surface Hopping Dynamics Simulations? Azomethane as a Case Study

Nonadiabatic dynamics simulations have become a standard approach to explore photochemical reactions. Such simulations require underlying potential energy surfaces and couplings between them, calculated at a chosen level of theory, yet this aspect is rarely assessed. Here, in combination with the popular trajectory surface hopping dynamics method, we use a high-accuracy XMS-CASPT2 electronic structure level as a benchmark for assessing the performances of various post-Hartree-Fock methods (namely, CIS, ADC(2), CC2, and CASSCF) and exchange-correlation functionals (PBE, PBE0, and CAM-B3LYP) in a TD-DFT/TDA context, using the isomerization around a double bond as test case. Different relaxation pathways are identified, and the ability of the different methods to reproduce their relative importance and time scale is discussed. The results show that multireference electronic structure methods should be preferred, when studying nonadiabatic decay between excited and ground states. If not affordable, TD-DFT with TDA and hybrid functionals and ADC(2) are efficient alternatives but overestimate the nonradiative decay yield and thus may miss deexcitation pathways.

Understanding Photophysical Properties of Molecules Relevant in Organic Semiconductor Laser Diodes from Electron Localization Function-Tuned and Solvent-Tuned Range-Separated Functionals

Organic semiconductor laser diodes (OSLDs) are prevalent in optoelectronics because of their sustainable energy applications. Organic molecules used in such diodes are usually large; hence, their studies are computationally challenging with high-end benchmark methods. Computational methods with reliable accuracy and efficiency are always indispensable. In the present work, we have applied our computationally inexpensive, nonempirically tuned [electron localization function (ELF*) and solvent (Sol*)] range-separated (RS) functionals to study five molecules used in OSLDs. The emission energies in three different environments [toluene, CBP (4,4'-bis(n-carbazolyl)-1,1'-biphenyl) film, and gas] have been computed with the tuned functionals and compared with the experimental emission energies. ELF* and Sol* functionals can accurately reproduce emission energies in toluene and CBP film environments. On the other hand, both ELF* and IP-tuned functionals with excited-state geometry (IP*) perform better in the gas phase. In addition, a comparative study is performed between time-dependent density functional theory and the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. Along with the emission energy, oscillator strength values have also been reported. Different IP-tuned RS parameters were obtained with the ground- and excited-state geometries. Interestingly, it has been observed that the optimally tuned RS parameter with excited-state geometry (IP*) performs better compared to that with ground-state geometries (IP). Fractional occupation calculations show that the tuned functionals exhibit less localization and delocalization error. The study envisages that ELF* and Sol* functionals can be used to design future candidates for OSLDs.

Photodynamics of the Molecular Ruby [Cr(ddpd)2]3

The introduction of strong-field ligands can enable luminescence in first-row transition-metal complexes. In this way, earth-abundant near-infrared emitters can be obtained using early 3d metals. A prime example is the molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)₂]³⁺ (ddpd = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine) that can achieve high phosphorescence quantum yields at room temperature in aqueous solution. To understand these remarkable properties, here, we simulate its photodynamics in water using trajectory surface hopping on linear vibronic coupling potentials parametrized from multiconfigurational CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations. We find that after excitation to the second absorption band, a relaxation cascade through metal-centered states occurs. After an initial back-and-forth intersystem crossing with higher-lying doublet states, the complex relaxes through a manifold of quartet metal-centered states to the low-lying doublet metal-centered states which are responsible for the experimentally observed emission. These electronic processes are driven by an elongation of the Cr-ligand bond lengths as well as the twisting motion of the trans-coordinated pyridine units in the ddpd ligands. The low-lying doublet states are reached within 1-2 ps and are close in geometry to the doublet minima, thus explaining the high phosphorescence quantum yield of the molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)₂]³⁺.
