The effect of dynamically heterogeneous interphases on the particle dynamics of polymer nanocomposites

Two-Dimensional Fluctuation Correlation Spectroscopy (2D-FlucCS): A Method to Determine the Origin of Relaxation Rate Dispersion

Relaxation rate dispersion, i.e., nonexponential or multicomponent kinetics, is observed in complex systems when measuring relaxation kinetics. Often, the origin of rate dispersion is associated with the heterogeneity in the system. However, both homogeneous (where all molecules experience the same rate but inherently nonexponential) and heterogeneous (where all molecules experience different rates) systems can exhibit rate dispersion. A multidimensional correlation analysis method has been demonstrated to detect and quantify rate dispersion observed in molecular rotation, diffusion, solvation, and reaction kinetics. One-dimensional (1D) autocorrelation function detects rate dispersion and measures its extent. Two-dimensional (2D) autocorrelation function measures the origin of rate dispersion and distinguishes homogeneous from heterogeneous. In a heterogeneous system, implicitly there exist subensembles of molecules experiencing different rates. A three-dimensional (3D) autocorrelation function measures subensemble exchange if present and reveals if the system possesses static or dynamic heterogeneity. This perspective discusses the principles, applications, and potential and also presents a future outlook of two-dimensional fluctuation correlation spectroscopy (2D-FlucCS). The method is applicable to any experiment or simulation where a time series of fluctuation in an observable (emission, scattering, current, etc.) around a mean value can be obtained in steady state (equilibrium or nonequilibrium), provided the system is ergodic.

From fundamental insights to rational (bio)polymer nanocomposite design - Connecting the nanometer to meter scale

Nanoparticle addition has the potential to make bioplastic use mainstream, as the resultant nanocomposite shows improved mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties. It is well established that the architecture and dynamics of the nanoparticle-polymer interphasial region, ∼ 1.5-9 nm from the nanoparticle surface, are crucial for nanocomposite characteristics. Yet, how these molecular phenomena translate to the bulk is still largely unknown. A multi-disciplinary and multi-scale vision is required to capture the full picture and improve materials far beyond what is currently possible. In this review, a first step in bridging the apparent gap between fundamental insights toward observed material properties is made. At the molecular scale, the polymer chain density and dynamics at the nanoparticle surface are governed by a complex interplay between enthalpy and entropy. The resultant interphasial properties can only be propagated to the macroscopic scale effectively when the nanoparticles are well-distributed. This makes the dispersion state a key parameter for which thermodynamic and kinetic insights can be used to prevent nanoparticle aggregation. These insights are linked to material properties relevant to packaging. The outlook section elaborates on the remaining challenges and the steps required to further understand and better design nanocomposite systems.

Molecular Insight into the Effects of Clustering on the Dynamics of Ionomers in Solutions

Ionizable groups tethered to polymers enable their many current and potential applications. However, these functionalities drive the formation of physical networks through clustering of the ionic groups, resulting in constrained dynamics of the macromolecules. Understanding the molecular origin of this hindrance remains a critical fundamental question, whose solution will directly impact the processing of ionizable polymers from molecules to viable materials. Here, using quasielastic neutron scattering accompanied by molecular dynamics simulations, segmental dynamics of slightly sulfonated polystyrene is studied in solutions as the cohesion of the ionic assemblies is tuned. We find that in cyclohexane the ionic assemblies act as centers of confinement, affecting dynamics both on macroscopic lengths and in the vicinity of the ionic assemblies. Addition of a small amount of ethanol affects the packing of the ionizable groups within the assemblies, which in turn enhances the chain dynamics.
