Recent advances in biological molecule detection based on a three-dimensional graphene structure

Graphene has become an attractive material in the field of electrochemical detection owing to its unique electrical properties. Although the simple stacking structures of two-dimensional (2D) graphene sheets can provide excellent detection properties, a macroscopic three-dimensional (3D) structure needs to be constructed to enhance its functional properties. Graphene with a 3D structure has elegant functions, unlike graphene with a 2D structure. These properties include a large specific surface area, easy loading of nanomaterials with electrocatalytic and redox functions, and so on. Herein, we outline the preparation methods (self-assembly, chemical vapor deposition, templates, and 3D printing) for 3D graphene structures for obtaining excellent detection performance and applications in detecting biological molecules, bacteria, and cells. Furthermore, this review focuses on the improvement of the detection performance and enhancement of the applicability of graphene-based electrochemical sensors. We hope that this article will provide a reference for the future development of electrochemical sensors based on 3D graphene composites.

Graphene-Based Aerogels for Biomedical Application

Aerogels are three-dimensional solid networks with incredibly low densities, high porosity, and large specific surface areas. These aerogels have both nanoscale and macroscopic interior structures. Combined with graphene, the aerogels show improved mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, surface area, and adsorption capacity, making them ideal for various biomedical applications. The graphene aerogel has a high drug-loading capacity due to its large surface area, and the porous structure enables controlled drug release over time. The presence of graphene makes it a suitable material for wound dressings, blood coagulation, and bilirubin adsorption. Additionally, graphene's conductivity can help in the electrical stimulation of cells for improved tissue regeneration, and it is also appropriate for biosensors. In this review, we discuss the preparation and advantages of graphene-based aerogels in wound dressings, drug delivery systems, bone regeneration, and biosensors.

A PVDF-based colorimetric sensor array for noninvasive detection of multiple disease-related volatile organic compounds

Detection of human-generated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a new pathway for assessing health. Herein, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based colorimetric sensor array was designed for detecting disease-related VOCs (DVOCs) within 15 min, using a complex of Cu metal-organic framework, graphene aerogel, and dyes as response materials. Fingermaps derived from 28 DVOCs were obtained for further data processing. Pattern recognition was successfully employed in the correct discrimination of 28 DVOCs in low (10 μM), medium (100 μM), and high (300 μM) concentrations. Importantly, the sensor array also presented excellent discrimination ability and application potential when detecting VOCs produced by human cancer and normal cells. In general, VOC acquisition is noninvasive and harmless, and the PVDF-based sensor arrays are simple and visual. Such advantages expand their further application potential.
