Enthralling Anodic Protection by Molybdate on High-Entropy Alloy-Based Electrocatalyst for Sustainable Seawater Oxidation

Efficient and sustainable seawater electrolysis is still limited due to the interference of chloride corrosion at the anode. The designing of suitable electrocatalysts is one of the crucial ways to boost electrocatalytic activity. However, the approach may fall short as achieving high current density often occurs in chlorine evolution reaction (CER)-dominating potential regions. Thereby, apart from developing an OER-active high-entropy alloy-based electrocatalyst, the present study also offers a unique way to protect anode surface under high current density or potential by using MoO4 2- as an effective inhibitor during seawater oxidation. The wide variation of d-band center of high-entropy alloy-based electrocatalyst allows great oxygen evolution reaction (OER) proficiency exhibiting an overpotential of 230 mV at current density of 20 mA cm-2. Besides, the electrocatalyst demonstrates impressive stability over 500 h at high current density of 1 A cm-2 or at a high oxidation potential of 2.0 V versus RHE in the presence of a molybdate inhibitor. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal MoO4 2- electrostatically accumulated at anode surface due to higher adsorption ability, thereby creating a protective layer against chlorides without affecting OER.

Nanostructured High Entropy Alloys as Structural and Functional Materials

Since their introduction in 2004, high entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional mechanical and functional properties. Advances in our understanding of atomic-scale ordering and phase formation in HEAs have facilitated the development of fabrication techniques for synthesizing nanostructured HEAs. These materials hold immense potential for applications in various fields including automobile industries, aerospace engineering, microelectronics, and clean energy, where they serve as either structural or functional materials. In this comprehensive Review, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the mechanical and functional properties of nanostructured HEAs, with a particular emphasis on the roles of different nanostructures in modulating these properties. To begin, we explore the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the formation and stability of nanostructures in HEAs. Subsequently, we delve into an examination of the mechanical and electrocatalytic properties exhibited by bulk or three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured HEAs, as well as nanosized HEAs in the form of zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles, one-dimensional (1D) nanowires, or two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. Finally, we present an outlook on the current research landscape, highlighting the challenges and opportunities associated with nanostructure design and the understanding of structure-property relationships in nanostructured HEAs.

A Fe(III) intercalated clay nanoplatform for combined chemo/chemodynamic therapy

A Fe(III) intercalated montmorillonite nanoplatform (Fe-MMT) was engineered for doxorubicin (DOX) loading. The constructed Fe-MMT/DOX nanoplatform could not only improve the production of H2O2 to enhance chemodynamic therapy but interfere with DNA damage repair to amplify the efficacy of DOX, proving an ideal combination of chemotherapy and chemodynamic therapy.

Nanoflower-Like High-Entropy Co-Fe-Cr-Mo-Mn Spinel for Oxygen Evolution

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key anode reaction of electrolytic water. To improve the slow OER kinetics, we synthesize nanoflower-like Co-Fe-Cr-Mo-Mn high-entropy spinel (HES) nanosheets on nickel foam (NF) by one-step solvothermal method, which exhibit an overpotential (η10) of only 188 mV at 10 mA cm-2, much lower than bimetallic CoFeOx/NF (233 mV), trimetallic CoFeCrOx/NF (211 mV), and tetrametallic CoFeCrMoOx/NF (200 mV). The OER overpotential decreases with the increase of the number of metals, indicating that the formation of HES has a positive effect on the improvement of electrocatalytic performance, since the synergistic effect between different metals enhances the charge transfer rate and decreases reaction barrier. In-situ Raman spectra demonstrate that the formation of γ-NiOOH on the HES surface is a crucial active species for the OER. This work demonstrates a simple and efficient synthesis method to prepare nanoflower-like high-entropy electrocatalysts for efficient OER electrocatalysis.

Laser-induced immobilization of an amorphous iron-phosphate/Fe3O4 composite on nickel foam for efficient water oxidation

A laser-induced immobilization strategy is applied to prepare an amorphous iron-phosphate/Fe3O4 (L-FePO) composite on a nickel foam (NF) support. By laser-irradiating an iron hydrogen phosphate (FeHP) precursor, a melting and oxidation process leads to the generation of L-FePO with hierarchical pores and an amorphous structure. L-FePO shows exceptional electrocatalytic performance for the OER in an alkaline electrolyte, demonstrating an overpotential of 256 mV at 100 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 71 mV dec-1, and good stability over 100 h. The active Fe3O4, partially dissolved phosphate, and newly formed FeOOH species provide abundant active sites, contributing to the excellent OER performance.

In situ synthesis of rosette-like Co-doped FeNiOOH/NF for seawater oxidation

The development of high activity and strong resistance to seawater corrosion oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis has broad application prospects. Herein, we prepare Co-doped FeNiOOH rosette-like nanoflowers on nickel foam (NF) with different Co dosages by one-step solvothermal method. The Co0.2-FeNiOOH/NF exhibits a low overpotential (η10) of 185 mV and Tafel slope of 30 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH. Moreover, it shows a low η10 of 244 mV in alkaline seawater electrolyte. The remarkable OER performance of Co0.2-FeNiOOH/NF is ascribed to the fact that the introduction of Co regulates the morphology and electron structure of the material, which provides abundant active sites for the reaction and promotes charge transfer. In situ Raman results demonstrate that NiOOH and γ-FeOOH are the key active species for the OER. This study provides a feasible basis for seawater electrolysis over transition metal (oxy)hydroxides.
