Influence of organic ligands on the stoichiometry of magnetite nanoparticles

Magnetite nanoparticles (nano-Fe3O4) and nano-Fe3O4 immobilized with bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) extracted from Lysinibacillus sp. WH (Fe3O4/bact) were comparatively studied for the removal of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solution in batch study. The objectives were to explore the removal of Cr (VI) efficiency by nano-Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/bact under varying bacterial concentrations at a range of acidic pH. Results indicated that 150 ppm Cr (VI) could be effectively removed by 5 g/L of nano-Fe3O4 at pH 4, with the efficiency of 89.2 ± 12%. The equilibrium time, determined by a pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.9983), was after 5 h, indicating chemical adsorption. The Cr (VI) removal by the nano-Fe3O4 immobilized with bacterial EPS was effective and steady under a wide range of acidic conditions although bacterial EPS has an alkaline nature. Here, we are the first to demonstrate that Cr (VI) removal efficiency by different concentrations of EPS was not significantly different, suggesting EPS concentration is possibly not the most crucial factor to be optimized for Cr (VI) removal in the future. This study shows the potential application of nano-Fe3O4 immobilized with bacterial EPS for wastewater treatment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The equilibrium time for magnetite nanoparticles to remove Cr (VI) is 5 h, suggesting chemical adsorption. The Cr (VI) removal efficiency of either magnetite nanoparticles or bacterial EPS is stable under a wide range of acidic conditions. Magnetite nanoparticles immobilized with bacterial EPS extracted from Lysinibacillus sp. WH has a potential application for Cr (VI) removal in wastewater.

Magnetic nanoparticles: An emerging nanomedicine for cancer immunotherapy

Cancer immunotherapy is a revolutionised strategy that strikingly improves cancer treatment in recent years. However, like other therapeutic modalities, immunotherapy faces several challenges and limitations. Many methods have been developed to overcome those limitations; thus, nanomedicine is one of the emerging fields with a highly promising application. Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) have long been used for medical applications, for example, as a contrast medium, and are being investigated as a tool for boosting and synergizing the effects of immunotherapy. With known physicochemical properties and the interaction with the surroundings in biological systems, MNPs are used to improve the efficacy of immunotherapy in both cell-based and antibody-based treatment. This chapter reviews and discusses state-of-the-art MNPs as a tool to advance cancer immunotherapy as well as its limitations that need further investigation for a better therapeutic outcome in preclinical and clinical settings.

Iron oxide nanoparticles improving multimetal phytoextraction in Helianthus annuus

This study assessed the phytotoxicity of a mixture of five different trace elements (TEs) frequently found as pollutants in soils: arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead and zinc. On the other hand, the plant response to a magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle amendment on this mixture as well as nanomagnetite remediation potential has been tested. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) plants were grown for 90 days in soil contaminated with the five mentioned TEs at the limit levels of TEs in soils likely to receive sludge established by French legislation. Depending on the conditions, experimental set-ups were amended or not with 1% dry weight nanomagnetite (NPsMagn), citric acid-coated nanomagnetite (NPsMagn@CA) or micro-sized magnetite (μPs) in order to assess the behavior of nanomagnetites in a TEs-contaminated water-soil-plant system under repeated water-deficiency stress. The mixture of TEs did not induce phytotoxicity as estimated by plant growth, pigment content, maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis, oxidative impact and antioxidant response. Furthermore, both nanomagnetites treatments in a TEs-contaminated soil significantly increased biomass production by 64 % compared to control and antioxidant enzyme activities compared to control and TEs-treated plants. NPsMagn and NPsMagn@CA particularly enhance phytoextraction of Cd and Cu, increasing the amounts of TEs in aerial parts from 1.5 to 4.5 times compared to set-ups without nanomagnetites. Based on Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn contents in soil solutions, both nanomagnetites treatments improved TEs phytoextraction without increasing groundwater contamination. On the contrary, nanomagnetites significantly reduce arsenic uptake by plants and solubilization in dissolved phase. Our results show that modifying surface physicochemical properties of NPsMagn with citric acid coating does not improve their effects compared to bare NPsMagn. NPsMagn and NPsMagn@CA also appear to mitigate the effects of drought stress. This work highlights several positive environmental aspects related to the use of nanomagnetites in phytoremediation.
