Beyond phosphorus: synthesis, reactivity, coordination behaviour and catalytic properties of 1,1'-bis(diphenylstibino)ferrocene

Compared to their widely studied phosphine counterparts, ferrocene stibines have received only marginal attention thus far. This paper describes the synthesis of 1,1'-bis(diphenylstibino)ferrocene (1*), which is an antimony analogue of the ubiquitous dppf, and our investigations into the reactivity and coordination behaviour of this compound. Thus, distibine 1 was oxidised to stiboranes fc(SbPh₂X₂)₂ (X = Cl, 2*; F, 6*; fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl) and to stibine-stiborane Ph₂SbfcSbPh₂F₂ (5*). Compounds 2 and 6 were easily hydrolysed to produce ferrocenophanes fc[SbPh₂XOSbPh₂X] (X = Cl, 3*; F, 7*). Removing the halogen from 3 with silver(I) salts afforded the corresponding ferrocenophanes with O-bound oxyanions, fc[SbPh₂ZOSbPh₂Z] (Z = NO₃, 4a*; ClO₄, 4b*), which were alternatively prepared from 2 and also converted back to 2 by adding a chloride source. Through investigations into the coordination behaviour of distibine 1, the following compounds were isolated and characterised: [(μ-ClO₄)₂{Ag(1-κ²Sb,Sb')}₂] (8*), [Ag(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X (X = ClO₄, 9a; SbF₆, 9b*), [(μ(Sb,Sb')-1){(arene)MCl₂}₂] (10*, 11*) and [(arene)MCl(1-κ²Sb,Sb')][PF₆] (12*, 13*; 10, 12: M/arene = Ru/η⁶-p-cymene, 11, 13; Rh/η⁵-C₅Me₅), [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)RuCl(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (14), [MCl₂(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (M = Pd, 15*; Pt, 16*), [Pd(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X₂ (X = BF₄, 17a; SbF₆, 17b*), [Pd(η²-ma)(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (18*; ma = maleic anhydride), [(μ(Sb,Sb')-1)(AuCl)₂] (19*), and [Au(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X (X = AuCl₂, 20a*; SbF₆, 20b*). Inspection of the structural parameters suggested that complexes featuring 1 exhibit less sterically strained structures than their dppf analogues due to longer M-Sb and Sb-C bonds, which reduce crowding around the ligated metal centre. Cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations revealed that the primary electrochemical oxidation of 1 is reversible and occurs at the ferrocene unit. Based on preliminary catalytic tests in Suzuki-Miyaura biaryl coupling, Pd-1 complexes exhibited a lower efficiency than their respective Pd-dppf analogues. Ultrasonic-assisted fabrication of thin-film electrochemical detector of H2O2 based on ferrocene-functionalized silver cluster

A novel ferrocene-functionalized silver cluster (FcAgCs) has been designed and synthesized with the assistant of ultrasound treatment and fully characterized by single crystal spectroscopy, IR, UV-Vis, XRD, TGA, NMR, CV and elemental analyses. Ultrasound synthesis method facilitates and accelerates synthesis of this amazing structure and plays a vital role in the synthesis of this special cluster. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveal that the cluster can be described as a cationic [(dppf)₂Ag₄(CC^tBu)₂(CH₃OH)₂]²⁺ (dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene) species consisted of four rhombic silver atom and two isolated BF₄^- counter anions. Thermal stability greater than 200 °C and solution CV results show that the title cluster is sufficiently stable and suitable for the fabricating of FcAgCs/ITO thin-films and exploring as electrochemical responding materials. Based on its properties, we use it to prepare thin-films on ITO substrate by spin coating method. Verification of synthesis, thickness, uniformity and stability of the fabricated FcAgCs/ITO thin-films were characterized and confirmed by UV, XRD, SEM and the scotch tape adhesion peel test. Moreover, we use this FcAgCs/ITO thin-film electrode as thin-film electrochemical detector which shows sensitive and quick response in the detection of H₂O₂.

Synthesis, structures and luminescence of multinuclear silver(i) pyrazolate adducts with 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives

A set of silver(i) 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) pyrazolate adducts with 1,10-phenanthroline (L²), 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (neocuproine, L³) and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine, L⁴) was synthesized starting from trimeric silver pyrazolate Ag₃Pz₃. Reactions with sterically hindered L³ and L⁴ cause the destruction of the original trimeric core, yielding a dinuclear Ag₂Pz₂ cycle with an unprecedented chair configuration for L³, while bathocuproine L⁴ leads to the drastic rearrangement of the silver pyrazolate core into cationic Ag(L⁴)₂ and anionic Ag₅Pz₆ subunits. All complexes obtained exhibit phosphorescence in the solid state. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations demonstrate their different possible emission processes, explaining their emission behavior as well as their lifetimes.

Silver(i) complexes with 1'-(diphenylphosphino)-1-cyanoferrocene: the art of improvisation in coordination

1'-(Diphenylphosphino)-1-cyanoferrocene () reacts with silver(i) halides at a 1 : 1 metal-to-ligand ratio to afford the heterocubane complexes [Ag(μ3-X)(-κP)]4, where X = Cl (), Br (), and I (). In addition, the reaction with AgCl with 2 equiv. of leads to chloride-bridged dimer [(μ-Cl)2{Ag(-κP)2}2] () and, presumably, also to [(μ(P,N)-){AgCl(-κP)}]2 (). While similar reactions with AgCN furnished only the insoluble coordination polymer [(-κP)2Ag(NC)Ag(CN)]n (), those with AgSCN afforded the heterocubane [Ag(-κP)(μ-SCN-S,S,N)]4 () and the thiocyanato-bridged disilver(i) complex [Ag(-κP)2(μ-SCN-S,N)]2 (), thereby resembling reactions in the AgCl- system. Attempted reactions with AgF led to ill-defined products, among which [Ag(-κP)2(μ-HF2)]2 () and [(μ-SiF6){Ag(-κP)2}2] () could be identified. The latter compound was prepared also from Ag2[SiF6] and . Reactions between and AgClO4 or Ag[BF4] afforded disilver complexes [(μ(P,N)-)Ag(ClO4-κO)]2 () and [(μ(P,N)-)Ag(BF4-κF)]2 () featuring pseudolinear Ag(i) centers that are weakly coordinated by the counter anions. A similar reaction with Ag[SbF6] followed by crystallization from ethyl acetate produced an analogous complex, albeit with coordinated solvent, [(μ(P,N)-)Ag(AcOEt-κO)]2[SbF6]2 (). Ultimately, a compound devoid of any additional ligands at the Ag(i) centers, [(μ(P,N)-)Ag]2[B(C6H3(CF3)2-3,5)4]2 (), was obtained from the reaction of with silver(i) tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate. The reaction of Ag[BF4] with two equivalents of produced unique coordination polymer [Ag(-κP)(μ(P,N)-)]n[BF4]n (), the structure of which contained one of the phosphinoferrocene ligands coordinated as a P,N-chelate and the other forming a bridge to an adjacent Ag(i) center. All of these compounds were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, revealing that the lengths of the bonds between silver and its anionic ligand(s) typically exceed the sum of the respective covalent radii, which is in line with the results of theoretical calculations at the density-functional theory (DFT) level, suggesting that standard covalent dative bonds are formed between silver and phosphorus (soft acid/soft base interactions) while the interactions between silver and the ligand's nitrile group (if coordinated) or the supporting anion are of predominantly electrostatic nature.

Synthesis and structural characterisation of Group 11 metal complexes with a phosphinoferrocene oxazoline

Interactions of phosphinoferrocene oxazolines with Group 11 metals were elucidated. The differences dictated by the metal ions are discussed.

Coinage metal coordination chemistry of stable primary, secondary and tertiary ferrocenylethyl-based phosphines

Ferrocene-based phosphines constitute an important auxiliary ligand in inorganic chemistry. Utilizing the (ferrocenylethyl)phosphines (FcCH2CH2)3-nHnP (Fc = ferrocenyl; n = 2, 1; n = 1, 2; n = 0, 3) the synthesis of a series of coordination complexes [(FcCH2CH2)3-nHnPCuCl]4 (n = 2, 1-CuCl; n = 0, 3-CuCl), [(FcCH2CH2)2HPCuCl] (2-CuCl), {[(FcCH2CH2)H2P]2AgCl}2 (1-AgCl), [(FcCH2CH2)2HPAgCl] (2-AgCl), [(FcCH2CH2)3PAgCl]4 (3-AgCl), [(FcCH2CH2)3PM(OAc)]4 (M = Cu, 3-CuOAc M = Ag, 3-AgOAc), [(FcCH2CH2)3-nHnPAuCl] (n = 1, 2-AuCl; n = 0, 3-AuCl), via the reaction between the free phosphine and MX (M = Cu, Ag and Au; X = Cl, OAc), is described. The reaction between the respective phosphine with a suspension of metal-chloride or -acetate in a 1 : 1 ratio in THF at ambient temperature affords coordinated phosphine-coinage metal complexes. Varying structural motifs are observed in the solid state, as determined via single crystal X-ray analysis of 1-CuCl, 3-CuCl, 1-AgCl, 3-AgCl, 3-CuOAc, 3-AgOAc, 2-AuCl and 3-AuCl. Complexes 1-CuCl and 3-CuCl are tetrameric Cu(i) cubane-like structures with a Cu4Cl4 core, whereas silver complexes with primary and tertiary phosphine reveal two different structural types. The structure of 1-AgCl, unlike the rest, displays the coordination of two phosphines to each silver atom and shows a quadrangle defined by two Ag and two Cl atoms. In contrast, 3-AgCl is distorted from a cubane structure via elongation of one of the ClAg distances. 3-CuOAc and 3-AgOAc are isostructural with step-like cores, while complexes 2-AuCl and 3-AuCl reveal a linear geometry of a phosphine gold(i) chloride devoid of any aurophilic interactions. All of the complexes were characterized in solution by multinuclear (1)H, (13)C{(1)H} and (31)P NMR spectroscopic techniques; the redox chemistry of the series of complexes was examined using cyclic voltammetry. This class of complexes has been found to exhibit one reversible Fe(ii)/Fe(iii) oxidation couple, suggesting the absence of electronic communication between the ferrocenyl units on individual phosphine ligands as well as between different phosphines on the polymetallic cores.

Synthesis and Coordinating Ability of an Anionic Cobaltabisdicarbollide Ligand Geometrically Analogous to BINAP

The anionic chelating ligand [1,1'-(PPh2)2-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)2]- has been synthesized from [3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2]- in very good yield in a one-pot process with an easy work-up procedure. The coordinating ability of this ligand has been studied with Group 11 metal ions (Ag, Au) and with transition-metal ions (Pd, Rh). The two dicarbollide halves of the [1,1'-(PPh2)2-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)2]- ligand can swing about one axis in a manner analogous to the constituent parts of BINAP and ferrocenyl phosphine derivatives. All these ligands function as hinges, with the most important property in relation to the coordination requirements of the metal being the PP distance. [1,1'-(PPh2)2-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)2]-, BINAP, ferrocenyl phosphine derivatives, and other hinge ligands present a range of different PP separations, and consequently different coordination spheres and dispositions around metal cations. To account for these differences, the equation Dphi2 = D02 + 4 R2cos2(90-phi/2) has been developed. It relates the PP distance (Dphi) in a complex with the minimum PP distance (D0) that is characteristic of the hinge-type ligand.

Gold and silver complexes with the ferrocenyl phosphine FcCH2PPh2

Linear gold(I) and silver(I) complexes with the ferrocenyl phosphine FcCH2PPh2 [Fc = (eta5-C5H5)Fe(eta5-C5H4)] of the types [AuR(PPh2CH2Fc)], [M(PPh3)(PPh2CH2Fc)]OTf, and [M(PPh2CH2Fc)2]OTf (M = Au, Ag) have been obtained. Three-coordinate gold(I) and silver(I) derivatives of the types [AuCl(PPh2CH2Fc)2] and [M(PPh2CH2Fc)3]X (M = Au, X = ClO4; M = Ag, X = OTf) have been obtained from the corresponding gold and silver precursors in the appropriate molar ratio, although some of them are involved in equilibria in solution. The crystal structures of [AuR(PPh2CH2Fc)] (R = Cl, C6F5), [AuL(PPh2CH2Fc)]OTf (L = PPh3, FcCH2PPh2), [Au(C6F5)3(PPh2CH2Fc)], and [Ag(PPh2CH2Fc)3]OTf have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.
