Abstract
TTF- and exTTF-containing [(μ-S2)Fe2(CO)6] complexes have been prepared by the photochemical reaction of TTF or exTTF and [(μ-S2)Fe2(CO)6]. These complexes are able to interact with PAHs. In the absence of air and in acid media an electrocatalytic dihydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurs, similarly to analogous [(μ-S2)Fe2(CO)6] complexes. However, in the presence of air, the TTF and exTTF organic moieties strongly influence the electrochemistry of these systems. The reported data may be valuable in the design of [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics able to combine the HER properties of the [FeFe] cores with the unique TTF properties.

Abstract
This short review article provides the reader with a summary of the history of organic conductors. To retain a neutral and objective point of view regarding the history, background, novelty, and details of each research subject within this field, a thousand references have been cited with full titles and arranged in chronological order. Among the research conducted over ~70 years, topics from the last two decades are discussed in more detail than the rest. Unlike other papers in this issue, this review will help readers to understand the origin of each topic within the field of organic conductors and how they have evolved. Due to the advancements achieved over these 70 years, the field is nearing new horizons. As history is often a reflection of the future, this review is expected to show the future directions of this research field.

Abstract
1,3-Dithiol-2-ide is a fully unsaturated five-membered heterocycle with a carbanion unit between two of the ring sulfur atoms. Derivatives thereof are important intermediates in synthetic protocols for preparing various 1,4-dithiafulvene (DTF) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) compounds by Wittig, Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons, or phosphite-mediated olefination reactions. When considering the electronic properties of DTF, one would usually consider this unit as an electron-donating group as it can form a 6π-aromatic 1,3-dithiolium ring by resonance. Yet, in this review, I will move forward a dual character of the DTF by which it can also act as an electron-withdrawing group, involving formation of the 1,3-dithiol-2-ide. In particular, this electronic effect can be used to explain its ability to promote the electrocyclic ring closure of a vinylheptafulvene into a dihydroazulene. This view on the properties of DTF is very much in line with the dual reactivity of ketene dithioacetals that react with both nucleophiles and electrophiles. Moreover, the 1,3-dithiol-2-ide unit was recently generated in the reduction of an extended and quinoid-like TTF where the core became an aromatic carbo-benzene moiety. This aspect is particularly interesting for future design of extended TTFs that can act as both electron donors and acceptors.

Abstract
Derivatives of a new bis-fused donor composed of TTF and extended TTF with an anthraquinoid spacer (TTFAQ) (2) were successfully synthesized. X-ray structure analysis of the tetrakis(methylthio) derivative 2Aa and its I3- salt revealed that the TTFAQ moieties of both 2Aa and 2Aa•+ adopt the so-called saddle conformation similar to most neutral TTFAQs. The results obtained from the X-ray structure analysis and cyclic voltammetry suggest that a positive charge in 2Aa•+ is unevenly distributed on the TTF moiety, while both positive charges of 22+ are mainly located on the TTFAQ moiety. In the first two-electron redox processes, an extra cathodic wave attributed to the coexistence of a different reduction process from the oxidation process was observed for most of the derivatives.

Abstract
Controlling the guest expulsion process from a receptor is of critical importance in various fields. Several coordination cages have been recently designed for this purpose, based on various types of stimuli to induce the guest release. Herein, we report the first example of a redox-triggered process from a coordination cage. The latter integrates a cavity, the panels of which are based on the extended tetrathiafulvalene unit (exTTF). The unique combination of electronic and conformational features of this framework (i.e. high π-donating properties and drastic conformational changes upon oxidation) allows the reversible disassembly/reassembly of the redox-active cavity upon chemical oxidation/reduction, respectively. This cage is able to bind the three-dimensional B12 F12 (2-) anion in a 1:2 host/guest stoichiometry. The reversible redox-triggered disassembly of the cage could also be demonstrated in the case of the host-guest complex, offering a new option for guest-delivering control.

Abstract
The development of metal-free organic sensitizers is a key issue in dye-sensitized solar cell research. We report successful photovoltaic conversion with a new class of stable tetrathiafulvalene derivatives, showing surprising electrochemical and kinetic properties. With time-resolved spectroscopy we could observe highly efficient regeneration of the photo-oxidized tetrathiafulvalene sensitizers, which were attached to a mesoporous TiO(2) film, by a redox mediator in the pores (iodide/tri-iodide), even though the measured driving force for regeneration was only approximately 150 mV. This important proof-of-concept shows that sensitizers with a small driving force, i.e. the oxidation potential of the sensitizer is separated from the redox potenial of the mediator by as little as 150 mV, can operate functionally in dye-sensitized solar cells and eventually aid to reduce photovoltage losses due to poor energetic alignment of the materials.

Abstract
A new tris(tetrathiafulvaleno)dodecadehydro[18]annulene with six peripheral n-hexyl substituents was prepared by oxidative Glaser-Hay cyclization of a corresponding diethynylated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) precursor. The electronic properties of the neutral and oxidized species were studied by both UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy and electrochemistry. From these studies, it transpires that the strongly violet-colored macrocycle does not aggregate in solution to any significant degree, which was confirmed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. This reluctance towards aggregation contrasts that observed for related TTF-annulenes containing other peripheral substitutents. Oxidation of the TTF-annulene occurs in two three-electron steps as inferred from both the peak amplitudes and the spectroelectrochemical study. We find that the tris(TTF)-fused dehydro[18]annulene is more difficult to oxidize (by +0.20 V) than the silyl-protected diethynylated mono-TTF precursor. In contrast, the first vertical ionization energy calculated at the B3 LYP/6-311+G(2d,p) level for the parent tris(TTF)-fused dehydro[18]annulene devoid of peripheral hexyl substituents is in fact lower (by 0.44 eV). Moreover, the surface morphology of 1 d drop-cast on a mica substrate was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Crystalline domains with slightly different orientations were observed. The thickness of individual layers seen in the crystalline domains and the thickness of a monolayer obtained from a very dilute solution were determined to 1.8-1.9 nm. This thickness corresponds to the diameter of the macrocycle and the layers seen in the film are apparently formed when the molecules stack in the horizontal direction relative to the substrate.

Abstract
Derivatives of 9-[2-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)ethylidene]thioxanthene have been synthesized using Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions of (1,3-dithiol-2-yl)phosphonate reagents with thioxanthen-9-ylidene-acetaldehyde (5). Further reactions lead to the sterically crowded cross-conjugated "vinylogous tetrathiafulvalene" derivative 9-[2,3-bis-(4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-propylidene]thioxanthene (10). X-ray crystallography, solution electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry, and simultaneous electrochemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, combined with theoretical calculations performed at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level, elucidate the interplay of the electronic and structural properties in these molecules. For compound 10, multistage redox behavior is observed: the overall electrochemical process can be represented by 10-->10(.+)-->10(2+)-->10(4+) with good reversibility for the 10-->10(.+)-->10(2+) transformations. At the tetracation stage there is the maximum gain in aromaticity at the dithiolium and thioxanthenium rings. Theory predicts that for 10, 10(.+), and 10(2+) the trans isomers are more stable than the cis isomers (by ca. 2-18 kJ mol(-1)), whereas for 10(4+) the cis isomer becomes more stable than the trans isomer (by ca. 25 kJ mol(-1)) [trans and cis refer to the arrangement of the two dithiole moieties with respect to the central ==C(R)--C(H)== fragment]. These data explain the detection in cyclic voltammograms of both trans and cis isomers of 10 and 10(.+) during the reduction of 10(4+) at fast scan rates (>100 mV s(-1)) when the cis-trans isomerization is not completed within the timescale of the experiment. The X-ray structure of the charge-transfer complex (CTC) of 10 with 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorene-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene (DTeF) [stoichiometry: 10(.+)(DTeF)(2) (.-)2 PhCl] reveals a twisted conformation of 10(.+) (driven by the bulky thioxanthene moiety) and provides a very rare example of segregated stacking of a fluorene acceptor in a CTC.

Abstract
Derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene (9) and 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) have been synthesised using Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions of (1,3-dithiol-2-yl)phosphonate reagents with fluorenone and thioxanthen-9-one. X-ray crystallography, solution electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry and simultaneous electrochemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance (SEEPR), combined with theoretical calculations performed at the B3P86/6-31G** level, elucidate the interplay of the electronic and structural properties in these molecules. These compounds are strong two-electron donors, and the oxidation potentials depend on the electronic structure of the oxidised state. Two, single-electron oxidations (E(1)ox < E(1)ox) were observed for 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene systems (9). In contrast, derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) display the unusual phenomenon of inverted potentials (E(1)ox > E(1)ox) resulting in a single, two-electron oxidation process. The latter is due to the aromatic structure of the thioxanthenium cation (formed on the loss of a second electron), which stabilises the dication state (10(2+)) compared with the radical cation. This contrasts with the nonaromatic structure of the fluorenium cation of system 9. The two-electron oxidation wave in the thioxanthene derivatives is split into two separate one-electron waves in the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone derivatives 27-29 owing to destabilisation of the dication state.

Abstract
The first pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) dimer in which the two exTTF units are covalently connected by 1,3-dithiole rings has been obtained in a multistep synthetic procedure involving the Ullmann cross-coupling reaction by using copper(I) thiophene-2-carboxylate (CuTC). The electronic spectrum reveals a significant electronic interaction between the exTTF units. The electrochemical study carried out by cyclic voltammetry in solution and in thin-layer conditions, and the electrochemical simulation and spectroelectrochemical (SEC) measurements confirm the electronic communication and show that the oxidation of dimer 14 occurs as two consecutive 2 e(-) processes D(0)-D(0)-->D(2+)-D(0)-->D(2+)-D(2+). Theoretical calculations, performed at the B3P86/6-31G* level, confirm the experimental findings and predict that 14(2+) exists as a delocalized D(.+)-D(.+) species in the gas phase and as a localized D(2+)-D(0) species in solution (CH(3)CN or CH(2)Cl(2)). Oxidation of 14(2+) forms the tetracation 14(4+) which is constituted by two aromatic anthracene units bearing four aromatic, almost orthogonal 1,3-dithiolium cations.

Abstract
By considering the structures of many salts derived from extended TTF analogues, relationships between the molecular architecture of the donors with their electrochemical properties and their stacking mode in the salts are presented in this critical review. Three categories of donors corresponding to their extension modes have been considered. Firstly, for linearly extended TTFs the crucial role of the spacer in modifying the electrochemical properties and the packing mode in the salts is presented. Secondly, bidimentional extension of the donors obtained by linking several dithiafulvenyl units on a TTF core led to materials with increased dimensionality. Finally, the last class corresponds to the fusion, directly or across a benzene ring, of TTF frameworks. The former are the base of many salts with metallic behaviour. (148 references.).

A series of novel conjugated homo (16a,b) and heterodimers (20) of pi-extended tetrathiafulvalenes with p-quinodimethane structures (exTTFs) linked by a conjugative vinyl spacer have been prepared by olefination Wittig-Horner reaction from the corresponding quinones (14, 19) and phosphonates (15a,b). The redox properties, determined by cyclic voltammetry, reveal a strong donor character and the presence of only one four-electron oxidation wave to form the tetracation species at oxidation potential values quite similar to those found for the related monomers. Theoretical calculations (PM3) show a planar central stilbene moiety and highly distorted exTTF units. The electronic spectra support as well as the electrochemical data and theoretical calculation the lack of significant communication between the exTTF units.

Abstract
The synthesis of a new series of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and pi-extended TTF (exTTF) disulfides and the electrochemical properties of self-assembled monolayers derived from these compounds are described. When the intermediate bromides 3 and 7 were reacted with thiourea, followed by basic hydrolysis, the expected thiol formation was not observed and only disulfides were obtained. A mechanism is proposed to explain the self-oxidation process of these compounds. For the first time SAMs of exTTF derivatives were prepared. Electrochemical data for SAMs of 6 and 8 reveal a single two-electron chemically reversible oxidation process to form a dicationic state, typical of the exTTF system. The SAMs are stable over extended periods of time and show electrochemical stability upon repeated potential scans.

Abstract
The scope of the present work is to highlight the effects stemming from different C60/exTTF linkages (exTTF = 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene)-either via an anthracene unit or a dithiole ring. Particular emphasis is placed on photoinduced electron-transfer features. Therefore, we devised a new series of C60-exTTF ensembles, synthesized via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, in which exTTF units are separated from C60 by two single bonds (3a-c, 4), one vinylene unit (5a), or two vinylene units (5b). The cyclic voltammetry reveals an amphoteric redox behavior with remarkably strong electron-donor ability of the trimethyl-substituted exTTF moiety in 4 and 5a,b. Steady-state and time-resolved photolytic techniques show that the fullerene singlet excited state in (3a-c, 4, and 5a,b) is subject to a rapid electron-transfer quenching. The resulting charge-separated states, that is C60*(-)-exTTF*+, were identified by transient absorption spectroscopy. We determined radical pair lifetimes of the order of 200 ns in benzonitrile. This suggests (i) that the positive charge of the exTTF*+ is delocalized over the entire donor rather than localized on one of the 1,3-dithiole rings and (ii) that linking exTTF via the anthracene or 1,3-dithiole ring has no appreciable influence. Increasing the donor-acceptor separation via implementing one or two vinylene units as spacers led to improved radical pair lifetimes (5a: tau = 725 ns; 5b: tau = 1465 ns).
