Abstract
Carbon black (Ketchen Black with a particle size of several tens of nm) was coated with silica with a varied thickness of 2 and 12 nm. Carbon/silica core-shell particles were grafted with the γ-methacryloxypropylsilyl group to be homogeneously dispersed into a poly(methyl methacrylate) film. The electrical conductivity of the poly(methyl methacrylate) films containing carbon/silica particles was successfully controlled by the thickness of the silica layer; silica coating with 2 nm thickness gave a conducting film, while that with 12 nm thickness gave a less conducting film with a remarkable difference on the order of 106 (in volume conductivity).

Abstract
An organophilic clay was obtained by the intercalation of dioctadecyldimethylammonium ions into the interlayer space of a purified bentonite. The organophilic clay was characterized by its excellent whiteness, which originated from the used purified bentonite with a low content of colored impurities, suitable for its practical application in paints, cosmetics, polymer additives, etc. The dioctadecyldimethylammonium-bentonite clay was applied as a support to accommodate polyaromatic molecules to afford luminescent hybrids with high luminescence efficiency, showing its usefulness as a component of photofunctional hybrid materials.

Abstract
Nanoarchitecture of hybrids materials based on clay minerals as nano building blocks for the environmental remediation is summarized with the emphasis on the utilization of layered clay minerals, especially smectite group of clay minerals, as nano building blocks for designing functional nanostructures for the adsorption of molecular contaminants from the environments. Smectites are well-known adsorbents of cationic contaminants, while surface modification of smectites with organoammonium ions has given hydrophobic and microporous characters to uptake nonionic organic contaminants from environments. Not only on the designed interactions between adsorbent-adsorbate for efficient and higher capacity adsorption, the states of the adsorbed nonionic organic compounds have been altered and varied by the modification of smectites as shown by the controlled release and specific catalytic reactions. The organically modified clays are classified from the nanoarchitecture, and the functions derived from the nanoarchitectures are discussed based on the structure-property relationship.

Abstract
The preparation of cadmium selenide nanoparticles in the interlayer space of magadiite, a layered sodium silicate, modified with the cetyltrimethylammonium cation was studied. The preparation was based on the formation of cadmium selenide by the reaction between the cetyltrimethylammonium modified magadiite and an aqueous mixture of cadmium sulfate and sodium selenosulfite at room temperature. The resulting hybrids were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, HRTEM, TG-DTA, as well as UV-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The expansion of the interlayer spaces as well as TG-DTA results indicated the presence of the cetyltrimethylammonium cation and cadmium selenide in the hybrids. The HRTEM images showed the presence of cadmium selenide in the diameter range of 2-3 nm in the interlayer space of magadiite. The luminescence intensity of the cadmium selenide varied depending on the particle size, which was controlled by the loading amount of cadmium selenide precursor.

Abstract
A titania-stearic acid hybrid layer was deposited onto well-defined silica-hexadecyltrimethylammonium hybrid spherical particles with 854 nm size to obtain nanoporous particles with a useful hierarchical core-shell structure. The deposition of a 35 nm-thick titania layer was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The core-shell particles were washed with acidic ethanol (solvent extraction) and calcined at 550 °C for 5 h to remove the template, resulting in the formation of nanoporous titania coated nanoporous silica spherical particles, which have a bimodal pore size distribution attributed to the hierarchical porous core and porous shell structure. The nanoporous titania coated particles exhibited an unusual crystal phase transition; only anatase was present even after the calcination at 1000 °C for 1 h. This would be due to the interfacial bonding between the core silica and the shell titania, preventing the crystal phase transition from anatase to rutile. On the other hand, the direct calcination of the titania-stearic acid coated particles without solvent extraction led to a shell composed of both anatase and rutile. The transformation to rutile could be caused by the strong exothermic reaction during the oxidative decomposition of the occluded stearic acid. Furthermore, the intense exothermic reaction induced the formation of a yolk-shell structure, which played a role in the sensitive/selective sensing properties for acetic acid when the yolk-shell particles were coated onto a nanomechanical Membrane-type Surface stress Sensor (MSS).

Abstract
The coating of solid surfaces with inorganic materials is a promising approach not only to impart various functionalities but also to modify physicochemical properties that are affected by the geometry/structure of the coating. In this study, a silica-hexadecyltrimethylammonium (silica-CTA) hybrid layer was deposited on monodispersed spherical particles composed of titania and octadecylamine (titania-ODA) by a sol-gel reaction of tetraethoxysilane in aqueous CTA/ammonia/methanol solution. The formation of the coating was confirmed by SEM and TEM observations. The coating thickness varied from a few nm to 100 nm depending on the Si/Ti ratio. We found that Si/Ti = 0.68 resulted in the formation of microporous silica-titania particles with the pore size of 0.7 nm as revealed by nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements. Because the titania-ODA particles can be converted to mesoporous titania particles after removing ODA by acid/base treatment, the silica species can be impregnated into the titania particles and replace ODA under basic conditions. By increasing the Si/Ti molar ratio up to 1.4, silica-titania particles with non-porous structures were obtained. An amorphous to anatase transition occurred at around 800 °C, indicating the complete impregnation of silica inside the titania particles. Further increases of the Si/Ti molar ratio (to 3.4 and 6.8) led to the formation of the silica-CTA shell on the core particles, and the shell was converted to mesoporous silica layers with a pore size of 2 nm after calcination at 550 °C for 5 h. Non-linear control of the pore size/structure is presented for the first time; this will be useful for the precise design of diverse hybrid materials for optical, catalytic and biomedical applications.

Abstract
This paper reviews the recent progress in the preparation of oxide-based and heteroatom-doped particles. Surfactant-templated oxide particles, e.g. silica and titania, are possible candidates for various potential applications such as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optoelectronic and biological materials. We highlight nanoporous oxides of one element, such as silicon or titanium, and those containing multiple elements, which exhibit properties that are not achieved with individual components. Although the multicomponent nanoporous oxides possess a number of attractive functions, the origin of their properties is hard to determine due to compositional/structural complexity. Particles with a well-defined size and shape are keys for a quantitative and detailed discussion on the unique complex properties of the particles. From this viewpoint, we review the synthesis techniques of the oxide particles, which are functionalized with organic molecules or doped with heteroatoms, the physicochemical properties of the particles and the possibilities for their photofunctional applications as complex systems.

Abstract
The silylation of K2Ti4O9 x nH2O with organosilanes (methyl, n-butyl, n-octyl, n-dodecyl, n-octadecyltrimethoxysilanes and n-octadecyldimethylmethoxysilane) was conducted using the octylammonium-exchanged form as the intermediate. The surface coverage of the octadecylsilylated derivative was controlled by changing the employing amounts of octadecyltrimethoxysilane. The swelling behaviors of the octyl, dodecyl, and octadecylsilylated derivatives in organic solvents were investigated to show that the degree of the swelling varies depending on the kind of solvents, the alkyl chain length of the attached alkylsilyl groups, and the surface coverage. The octadecylsilylated derivative with the largest surface coverage was converted to film with a thickness of ca. 500 nm by casting the chloroform suspension on a substrate. The octadecylsilylated derivative showed a reversible thermoresponsive change of the basal spacing by ca. 0.5 nm in the temperature range between 15 and 60 degrees C.
