Abstract
An amphoteric membrane consists of both positively and negatively fixed charge groups chemically bound to the polymer chains. If the external solution is changed from alkali to acid, it is possible to obtain an experimental result in which the membrane potential changes from positive to negative through the isoelectric point. It was characterized by examining the relationship between membrane potential and proton concentration (pH) obtained from both experimental and theoretical considerations. The Nernst-Planck flux equation and the Donnan equilibrium theory were also solved for a four-component system combined with the dissociation constant, in order to discuss the pH dependence of membrane potential in a weak amphoteric membrane by comparing the experimental results with the calculated results. It was proven that the calculated results substantially deviated from the theoretical results despite a similar tendency. Such a deviation was caused by the fact that the original theory disregarded the activity coefficient and the ionic mobility, which were dependent on the fixed charge concentration in a membrane. The original theoretical model was modified by adding the effect of a fixed charge group to the activity coefficient and ionic mobility. The calculated results using the modified model explained well the experimental results if the parameter called charge effectiveness, phi, was introduced into the equations. Introduction of phi into the prediction of membrane potential was already done by Kobatake et al. in a system of a strong polyelectrolyte monopolar membrane/salt aqueous solution. In this study, it was proved that phi can also be introduced into a weak amphoteric polymer membrane/salt aqueous solution system. Finally it was also concluded that the Donnan equilibrium and the Nernst-Planck flux equation were still applicable for examining the transport phenomena for the system of a weak amphoteric charged membrane and electrolyte solutions at various pH.

Abstract
The electrical conductivity of pH-responsive hydrogels based on cross-linked poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) copolymers has been studied as a function of pH over the range 5-10, for copolymers containing up to 20 mol% of the amine-containing comonomer. The conductivities of membranes equilibrated in buffered potassium chloride solutions were determined by measuring the electrical resistance of a membrane mounted between the chambers of a modified side-by-side diffusion cell. The conductivity, expressed as a fraction of the conductivity of the buffer in which the gels were equilibrated, ranged from 1% for the gels in the collapsed state to 70% for the most highly swollen gels. The observed results are qualitatively consistent with a proposed model in which the ion concentrations in the fluid phase of the gel are described by Donnan partitioning, and the ion mobilities by the free-volume theory of Yasuda. The results suggest that conductivity measurements may provide an alternative to diffusive transport studies for characterizing moderately swollen hydrogel membranes.

Abstract
Electrical potentials Em arising across cross-linked phenolsulfonate membrane separating NaCl solutions of molality M1 and M2 have been measured at 25 degrees C. These values of Em have been used in the Nernst equation to calculate values for the apparent transport number ti(app) for the counterion or the co-ion in the membrane. Values of ti(app) together with the limiting value for the cation transport number in the aqueous phase have been used in the equation developed by Kobatake and co-workers to evaluate the membrane permselectivity Ps as a function of external electrolyte concentration. With the help of the equation relating Ps to phiX, the effective fixed-charge density in the membrane (where phi is a constant, 0 less than phi less than 1, and X is the membrane stochiometric charge density and can be evaluated by chemical analysis of the membrane phase), values for phiX and phi have been determined. Values of phi were low in dilute solutions and increased with increase in the concentration of the external solution. Similar behavior was noted in the case of another membrane system, cross-linked polymethacrylic acid in contact with KOH solutions. On the other hand, the membrane system, "untreated" collodion in contact with KCl solutions, exhibited a behavior in which the values of phi, low in dilute solutions, increased and then decreased following a gradual increase in the external concentration. This slight divergence in its behavior was attributed to the heterogeneity of the collodion membrane structure. The reliability of this potentiometric method to estimate effective fixed-charge density in membranes has been discussed in relation to a similar but old method due to Teorell, Meyer and Sievers. Also the significance of the values derived for phi has been pointed out.
