Thousand-Fold Enhancement of Charge-Separated State Lifetimes Caused by an Adamantane Bridge in Dimethylaniline-Anthracene and Dimethylaniline-Pyrene Dyads

A long-standing challenge in photoinduced electron transfer research is the design of compact donor-acceptor dyads that can generate long-lived charge-separated (CS) states for use as sensitizers in solar energy harvesting. Reports of dyads exhibiting CS state lifetimes in the microsecond time domain are very rare. Herein, we report two compact donor-bridge-acceptor dyads exhibiting lifetimes in the microsecond domain. We employed an adamantane moiety as a bridge, and the lifetimes obtained are nearly 1000-fold larger when compared to those of the same donor-acceptor dyads bridged through C₃-alkyl chains. In addition to long-lived CS state decays, slow formation of acceptor triplets was also observed via nanosecond flash photolysis. The long lifetime of the CS state is attributed to the extremely small value of the electronic coupling matrix element for the charge recombination compared to charge separation.

Artificial cell design: reconstructing biology for life science applications

Artificial cells are developed to redesign novel biological functions in a programmable and tunable manner. Although it aims to reconstitute living cell features and address 'origin of life' related questions, rapid development over the years has transformed artificial cells into an engineering tool with huge potential in applied biotechnology. Although the application of artificial cells was introduced decades ago as drug carriers, applications in other sectors are relatively new and could become possible with the technological advancement that can modulate its designing principles. Artificial cells are non-living system that includes no prerequisite designing modules for their formation and therefore allow freedom of assembling desired biological machinery within a physical boundary devoid of complex contemporary living-cell counterparts. As stimuli-responsive biomimetic tools, artificial cells are programmed to sense the surrounding, recognise their target, activate its function and perform the defined task. With the advantage of their customised design, artificial cells are being studied in biosensing, drug delivery, anti-cancer therapeutics or artificial photosynthesis type fields. This mini-review highlights those advanced fields where artificial cells with a minimalistic setup are developed as user-defined custom-made microreactors, targeting to reshape our future 'life'.

Solvent dependent triplet state delocalization in a co-facial porphyrin heterodimer

The excited triplet state of a cofacial aluminum(III) porphyrin-phosphorus(V) porphyrin heterodimer is investigated using transient EPR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. In the dimer, the two porphyrins are bound covalently to each other via a μ-oxo bond between the Al and P centres, which results in strong electronic interaction between the porphyrin rings. The spin polarized transient EPR spectrum of the dimer is narrower than the spectra of the constituent monomers and the magnitude of the zero-field splitting parameter D is solvent dependent, decreasing as the polarity of the solvent increases. The quantum chemical calculations show that the spin density of the triplet state is delocalized over both porphyrins, while magnetophotoselection measurements reveal that, in contrast to the value of D, the relative orientation of the ZFS axes and the excitation transition dipole moments are not solvent dependent. Together the results indicate that triplet state wavefunction is delocalized over both porphyrins and has a modest degree of charge-transfer character that increases with increasing solvent polarity. The sign of the spin polarization pattern of the dimer triplet state is opposite to that of the monomers. The positive sign of D predicted for the monomers and dimer by the quantum chemical calculations implies that the different signs of the spin polarization patterns is a result of a difference in the spin selectivity of the intersystem crossing.

Self-Assembly and Photochemistry of a Pyrene-Methyl Viologen Supramolecular Fiber System

This paper reports the self-assembly of a donor-acceptor system into nanoscopic structures and the photo processes taking place within these structures. The donor employed is pyrene linked to two β-cyclodextrin molecules (CD-PY-CD), and adamantane-linked methyl viologen attached to the three arms of mesitylene (Ms-(MV²⁺-AD)₃) is the acceptor. CD-PY-CD and Ms-(MV²⁺-AD)₃ when dissolved in water self-assembled into vesicles, which joined together to give long fibers. The self-assembly was studied using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Fluorescence of the pyrene chromophore was quenched within the self-assembled system due to efficient photoinduced electron transfer to methyl viologen. Photoinduced electron transfer within the assembly is confirmed through identification of product radical ions in flash photolysis experiments. Steady-state irradiation of the self-assembled system in an optical bench led to the formation of methyl viologen radical cation, which was stable for a few hours. Longevity of the radical cation was attributed to the fast reaction of pyrene radical cation with adjacent pyrene to give an unstable adduct, which slows down the back electron transfer process.

Self-Assembling Peptidic Bolaamphiphiles for Biomimetic Applications

Bolaamphiphile, which is a class of amphiphilic molecules, has a unique structure of two hydrophilic head groups at the ends of the hydrophobic center. Peptidic bolaamphiphiles that employ peptides or amino acids as their hydrophilic groups exhibit unique biochemical activities when they self-organize into supramolecular structures, which are not observed in a single molecule. The self-assembled peptidic bolaamphiphiles hold considerable promise for imitating proteins with biochemical activities, such as specific affinity toward heterogeneous substances, a catalytic activity similar to a metalloenzyme, physicochemical activity from harmonized amino acid segments, and the capability to encapsulate genes like a viral vector. These diverse activities give rise to large research interest in biomaterials engineering, along with the synthesis and characterization of the assembled structures. This review aims to address the recent progress in the applications of peptidic bolaamphiphile assemblies whose densely packed peptide motifs on their surface and their stacked hydrophobic centers exhibit unique protein-like activity and designer functionality, respectively.

Photoinduced Electron Transfer in a Self-Assembled Bis(β-cyclodextrin)-Linked Pyrene/Bis(adamantane)-Linked Methyl Viologen Donor-Acceptor System in Aqueous Solution

Pyrene linked to two β-CD (CD = cyclodextrin; PY = pyrene) molecules (CD-PY-CD) and methylviologen (MV²⁺) linked to two adamantane (AD) groups (AD-MV²⁺-AD) self-assembled in water to give toroidal nanostructures. Photoprocesses taking place in the femtosecond and nanosecond time ranges within the assembly are reported. Fluorescence of the pyrene chromophore was quenched in the toroid, suggesting very efficient electron transfer. Fast quenching of the pyrene fluorescence with a time constant of 6.85 ns was attributed to photoinduced electron transfer from pyrene to methyl viologen within the toroid assembly. Electron transfer leads to the formation of radical ion products, PY^•+ and MV^•+, which were identified in the nanosecond transient absorption spectra. Because of the close packing of chromophores, the radical ions undergo fast reactions with chromophores or similar ions in adjacent stacks to give dimeric products. Since the dimeric species are not very stable, the reactions are reversed at longer time scales to generate the radical ions, which then undergo back electron transfer and regenerate the starting materials.

Generation of Long-Lived Photoinduced Charge Separation in a Supramolecular Toroidal Assembly

Efficiencies of artificial photosynthetic and photocatalytic systems depend on their ability to generate long-lived charge-separated (CS) states in photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions. PET, in most cases, is followed by an ultrafast back electron transfer, which severely reduces lifetime and quantum yield of CS states. Generation of a long-lived CS state is an important goal in the study of PET reactions. Herein, we report that this goal is achieved using a hierarchically self-assembled anthracene-methyl viologen donor-acceptor system. Anthracene linked to two β-cyclodextrin molecules (CD-AN-CD) and methyl viologen linked to two adamantane units (AD-MV²⁺-AD) form an inclusion complex in water, which further self-assembled into well-defined toroidal nanostructures. The fluorescence of anthracene is highly quenched in the self-assembled system because of PET from anthracene to methyl viologen. Irradiation of the aqueous toroidal solution led to formation of a long-lived CS state. Rational mechanisms for the formation of the toroidal nanostructures and long-lived photoinduced charge separation are presented in the paper.

Minding the Gap between Plant and Bacterial Photosynthesis within a Self-Assembling Biohybrid Photosystem

Many strategies for meeting mankind's future energy demands through the exploitation of plentiful solar energy have been influenced by the efficient and sustainable processes of natural photosynthesis. A limitation affecting solar energy conversion based on photosynthetic proteins is the selective spectral coverage that is the consequence of their particular natural pigmentation. Here we demonstrate the bottom-up formation of semisynthetic, polychromatic photosystems in mixtures of the chlorophyll-based LHCII major light harvesting complex from the oxygenic green plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the bacteriochlorophyll-based photochemical reaction center (RC) from the anoxygenic purple bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides and synthetic quantum dots (QDs). Polyhistidine tag adaptation of LHCII and the RC enabled predictable self-assembly of LHCII/RC/QD nanoconjugates, the thermodynamics of which could be accurately modeled and parametrized. The tricomponent biohybrid photosystems displayed enhanced solar energy conversion via either direct chlorophyll-to-bacteriochlorophyll energy transfer or an indirect pathway enabled by the QD, with an overall energy transfer efficiency comparable to that seen in natural photosystems.

Photocatalytic redox reactions with metalloporphyrins

Metalloporphyrinoids are utilized as efficient sensitizers and catalysts in photosynthesis and the reverse reaction that is respiration. Because metalloporphyrinoids show strong absorption in the visible region and redox active, metalloporphyrinoids are also suited as photoredox catalysts for photo-driven redox reactions using solar energy. In particular, metalloporphyrins are utilized as pivotal components to mimic the structure and function of the photosynthetic reaction center. Metalloporphyrins are used as photoredox catalysts for hydrogen evolution from electron and proton sources combining hydrogen evolution catalysts. Metalloporphyrins also act as thermal redox catalysts for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with photoredox catalysts. Metalloporphyrins are also used as dual catalysts for a photoredox catalyst for oxygenation of substrates with H2O and a redox catalyst for O2 reduction when dioxygen is used as a two-electron oxidant and H2O as an oxygen source, both of which are the greenest reactants. Free base porphyrins can also be employed as promising photoredox catalysts for C–C bond formation reactions.

Combining Zinc Phthalocyanines, Oligo(p-Phenylenevinylenes), and Fullerenes to Impact Reorganization Energies and Attenuation Factors

A study on electron transfer in three electron donor-acceptor complexes is reported. These architectures consist of a zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) as the excited-state electron donor and a fullerene (C₆₀ ) as the ground-state electron acceptor. These complexes are brought together by axial coordination at ZnPc. The key variable in our design is the length of the molecular spacer, namely, oligo-p-phenylenevinylenes. The lack of appreciable ground-state interactions is in accordance with strong excited-state interactions, as inferred from the quenching of ZnPc centered fluorescence and the presence of a short-lived fluorescence component. Full-fledged femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy assays corroborated that the ZnPc ⋅ ⁺ -C₆₀  ⋅ ^- charge-separated state formation comes at the expense of excited-state interactions following ZnPc photoexcitation. At a first glance, the ZnPc ⋅ ⁺ -C₆₀  ⋅ ^- charge-separated state lifetime increased from 0.4 to 86.6 ns as the electron donor-acceptor separation increased from 8.8 to 29.1 Å. A closer look at the kinetics revealed that the changes in charge-separated state lifetime are tied to a decrease in the electronic coupling element from 132 to 1.2 cm^-1 , an increase in the reorganization energy of charge transfer from 0.43 to 0.63 eV, and a large attenuation factor of 0.27 Å^-1 .

Spiers Memorial Lecture. Artificial photosynthesis: An introduction

A brief introduction into artificial photosynthesis technologies is presented. Following the basic concepts of biological photosynthesis, light energy is directly or sequentially used for the synthesis of valuable chemicals with the help of man-made catalysts. Differences between artificial, hybrid and natural photosynthesis are shown and the possible advantages and disadvantages are highlighted.
