Studies on stigma regarding hearing impairment and hearing aid use among adults of working age: a scoping review

PURPOSE

Research on stigma has been criticized for centering on the perceptions of individuals and their effect on social interactions rather than studying stigma as a dynamic and relational phenomenon as originally defined by Goffman. This review investigates whether and how stigma has been evaluated as a social process in the context of hearing impairment and hearing aid use.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Systematic literature searches were conducted within four major databases for peer-reviewed journal articles on hearing impairment and hearing aid rehabilitation. In these, 18 studies with stigma, shame or mental wellbeing as the primary research interest were identified. The reports were examined for their methodology, focus and results.

RESULTS

The reviewed studies used both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, questionnaires and interviews being the most common methods. All studies concentrated on the participants' experiences or views concerning stigma. Studies examining the social process of stigmatization were lacking. Most studies pointed out the negative effect of stigma on the use of hearing aids.

CONCLUSIONS

In order to understand the process of stigmatization, more studies using observational methods are needed. Moreover, additional research should also focus on how stigma as a social and relational phenomenon can be alleviated. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Low adherence in hearing aid use is connected to fear of stigma related to hearing impairment and hearing aids. Hearing health services should include counseling to deal with individual's experiences and fear of stigma. Stigmatization is a social process that concerns individuals with hearing impairment in contact with their social environment. Hearing health professionals should consider including close relatives and/or partners of hearing impaired individuals in discussions of starting hearing aid rehabilitation. In consulting patients with hearing impairment professionals should give advice about how to deal with questions of hearing aid, hearing impairment and fear of stigma at work.

Situations of Choice: Configuring the Empowered Consumer of Hearing Technologies

Focusing on the largest and, arguably, the least visible disability group, the hearing impaired, this paper explores present-day views and understandings of hearing impairment and rehabilitation in a Danish context, with particular focus on working-age adults with late onset of hearing impairment. The paper shows how recent changes in perception of the hearing impaired patient relate to the introduction of a new health care reform that turns audiological rehabilitation into a consumer issue. Ethnographic and interview data from hearing clinics provides evidence that the hearing technologies that are on offer stabilise in specific forms through processes of negotiation among a variety of social actors representing the interests of science, industry, government, and hearing-impaired people. The discussion critically considers the emergence of an "informed consumer" in audiological practices.

Changing conceptions of health and life course concepts

Health as a social concept is very important in medical sociology. More complicated conceptions of health as a multi-dimensional concept have emphasized not only physical health status, but aspects of overall well-being. This article continues in the tradition of a multi-dimensional concept of health, but adds in the complexity of variation over the life course. As people age, chronic health problems become more common. Mobility and sensory limitations also increase. How does this impact how people view their health? How do more complicated understandings of the life course and variation by social factors link to an expanded model of health. This literature review article covers material on concepts of health and life course concepts. The concluding portions of the article focus on the need to improve measurement, to incorporate diversity related to social factors such as gender and race, and to incorporate a broader understanding of health problems into conceptions of health across the life course.

Reducing the potential for suffering in older adults with advanced cancer

Objective:

To deliver quality care at the end of life, understanding the impact of various changes and life transitions that occur in older age is essential. This review seeks to uncover potential sources of distress in an elder's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being to shed light on the unique challenges and needs facing this age group.

Methods:

Papers relating to older adults (aged 65 years and older or a mean age of 65 years and older) with advanced/terminal cancer receiving palliative, hospice, or end-of-life care published after 1998 were reviewed.

Results:

Older adults with advanced cancer have unique needs related to changes in their physical, psychological, social, and spirituals well-being. Changes in each of these domains offer not only the risk of causing distress but also the potential for growth and development during the final stages of advanced cancer.

Significance of results:

Being aware of the various changes that occur with aging will help health care professionals tailor interventions to promote dignity-conserving care and greatly reduce the potential for suffering at the end of life.

A Phenomenological Study: The Lived Experience of Persons Having a Different Sense of Hearing

Living with a different sense of hearing, including loss of hearing, is a worldwide phenomenon, known to be a silencing condition that can change persons’ patterns of relating and divest effective ways of giving and receiving messages of sound. This research describes the meaning of this experience for 7 participants. The researcher followed Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method for analysis-synthesis to arrive at a general structural description of the experience. Parse’s theory of human becoming framed the researcher’s theoretical perspective. Findings build on Parse’s theory and may enhance nurses’ understanding, in turn altering the way nurses approach persons having a different sense of hearing.
